Wa-ait a minute.
If this is meant to be part of Anje's recollection to the girls, that means Anje's in on it! ... or maybe Don mumbles in his sleep?

GPS in the 80s. When it was heavily guarded by NATO.
That's some serious cahoots.

What got me was the classification:
As I understand it,* "Eyes only" only means that the document doesn't leave the building. Someone brings it to you, shows you the document and, when you have finished reading it, you sign to say that you've read it. You can't take notes or do anything else.
This also tells us that Tony is a court spy.
* I saw a lot of spy films and read a lot of books in the genre growing up.

Well given she designed half of the magic programs that we have seen Eglamore and Donnie using (the protection barrier, the magic door), I would be surprised if she wasn't in on the big master plan somehow.

This also tells us that Tony is a court spy. Carver. Anthony Carver. Shaken, not stirred. They'd better only use him for wilderness assignments, though.

I guessed the trip was going to involve the Omega project! Also note bismuth's symbol.
I am enjoying this flashback chapter so much.

GPS in the 80s. When it was heavily guarded by NATO. That's some serious cahoots. We know that Tony and Don have their own, personal satellites in orbit (and that they've been up there a while). I don't think it's much of a stretch that the Court had their own GPS-like system in orbit in the 80s. One that was probably unknown and undetectable to the rest of the world.

I guessed the trip was going to involve the Omega project! Also note bismuth's symbol. I am enjoying this flashback chapter so much. Bismuth is used as a court symbol, so perhaps it is just an identifier - the Omega project of the Court. Or.... it *might* suggest that the Omega project has something to do with the seed Bismuth! It doesnt seem like anyone really understands how seed Bismuth works, other than the Court "grew" from it almost spontaneously. So maybe the Omega project is the effort to bring seed Bismuth and its technological "growing"-"replicating" powers fully into the Court's understanding and under its control, which would be quite powerful indeed. The seed Bismuth would seem to be a weird hybrid, able to make technology/infrastructure "grow" as though organically, almost like a Forest.

GPS in the 80s. When it was heavily guarded by NATO. That's some serious cahoots. Is it the 1980s, though? I've always kind of assumed that Annie's present is our present time, as well. So if Annie is 15 now, and her parents got married a few years before her birth, and fell in love a few years before that, the excursion would be, what, 20-odd years back? So the 90s, then, not the 80s, I'd think. Was a concrete time frame ever given? But if Auntie Wiki doesn't lie, GPS was first launched in 1978, so even the 80s would theoretically be possible. And it is a clunky device

Going along the periodic table, bismuth is the 'last' element with stable isotopes.

Tony, if you become any more anime than in panel 6, we'll kick you out of the program. These days I tend to avoid the proboards forums because of this CAN WE TALK anti-adblock messages. Thankfully it's much less aggressive if you're logged in. If they did the full-screen popup all the time, I'd stay away too. (Not sure what the logic is - they want to DEFINITELY turn away anyone who isn't already a user and won't immediately cave on adblocking?)

Slightly off-topic but, looking at pics for the upcoming TV production of "Good Omens", David Tennant would make a pretty good Tony Carver.

And it is a clunky device Let's not forget that these two are still probably students and comparing this to previous experiences she seems a lot younger, I doubt she was with Tony while cajoling Renard (Tony looks like he's into his 40s by now), but who knows. Mid-late 80s makes the most sense imo, but it's not well-defined. While the US Army had their own stuff and probably obtained suitable handheld devices well before the general public, commercial handheld GPS devices (lacking precision of modern systems) weren't a thing until 1989 and would've been pretty damn clunky. To get one useful for this sort of mission, it would have to be military-grade.

Going along the periodic table, bismuth is the 'last' element with stable isotopes. ...and Omega the last letter of the Greek alphabet. The final goal? The final solution (with historically scary implications?)?? (Actually, bismuth is also technically unstable - its most common/"stable" isotope Bi209 emits an alpha, but its half life is so long - 1.9e19 yrs, over a billion times the age the universe - that it is effectively stable.) Interestingly, Bismuth is chemically similar to Antimony (it is Antimony's heavier homolog, in chemical parlance - in the same column of the periodic table). Is Annie also the final culmination of some plan? Making the perfect human-elemental hybrid? (Getting wild-spec here...)

I just hope this chapter doesn't end on a cliffhanger. * cue James Bond theme music* Sure explains why Tony knows martial arts. Did he also teach Annie lockpicking? It seems like a spying kinda skill!!! (I particularly am fascinated by the thought that Annie is an agent for the Forest kinda and Tony is for the Court and I'm betting Jones is a total double-agent. I want an action sequence now!)

The omega device is the courts attempt at becoming furries. Thats why the nature. Thats why some go to the forest. Thats why the animal gods.
Its all a bunch teachers in fur costumes. Tony wont be safe for long.

I've been going with "omniscient narrator" story, while Anja tells the girls a less detailed story, that hits the main points. That wouldn't make much sense. That would mean that we learn some data, and Annie learns some data, but not all that we do, and there is no way for Tom to inform us which one she knows and which she doesn't. This would be very weird approach to narration.

Surma's probably thinking: "So if the scientific study is apparently just a cover for our SECRET BLACK OPS MISSIONS, then why couldn't we be pretending to study something cool, like tigers, or at least not-icky, like plants?"
