In the last panel for a moment I thought it was Anja saying "That would explain everything." Almost had a mini heart attack. Anja does look way older. Having your sophisticated android daughter on the direct path to discovering her own origins will do that to a person. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. Er, remind me again why Annie has reached the conclusion that her father brainwashed her mother? Maybe this was explained before. Edit: although from reading the rest of the thread, I don't think that's the case. We know that Tom writes VERY well ahead, and at the recent Google talk, his words made me think he hasn't gotten to the whole James/Surma/Anthony thing yet, but I really hope he actually has and he's faking us out. I really want to know the juicy drama. or mini brain light-bulb flicker on! and a face of concern for what it implies... Rey's and Egger's resentments, Anthony's boozy confessions, her own experiences with him after his return, all adding up slowly... and now Kat's change of heart is the straw that broke the camel's back of the old world-view. Annie seems to have done a full 180, a real paradigm shift on her father - from being able to do no wrong, to this. The emotional pendulum has swung a bit too far - reality lies somewhere between. We're all ears for backstory, Anya!

It's psychosomatic! That girl needs therap- -urely psychosomatic. Lie down on the couch! I bet Kat feels strangely hypnotized. What does that mean?

Last page: "Oh hey, seems we're going for a more lighthearted tone this time around"
Today: "...oh no"
Annie straight up snapped like a twig, dear god. How long has she been bottling up this conspiracy theory?

My personal theory on Annies behaviour is that she actually doesn't know him as a person, just as "father".
The reason I believe this is because Anthony actually gets more closed off the stronger his emotions are; he can talk to Don about his feelings about Annie, but he can't apologise to her or treat her well. He can't actually be around her; he doesn't talk with her (he gives commands, tells her what he thinks and demands things/information, but we've never seen him have an actual conversation with her), he doesn't live with her or spend free time with her.
So, yes, she's seen him with Don, but the conversation wasn't really affectionate; Don was angry and distanced, and Tony was sad and drunk. The things he said about his regret are true, but I'd don't think Annie can really believe them; this is very far removed from the Mr. Carver she knows.
She's seen him with Surma, but while she made it clear that she loved him, he couldn't say or show it (he did, of course, show it in his own way, but I don't think it's been that visible for Annie)
So, Annie knows she loves her father, and nobody else likes him, because of how he treats people. He doesn't joke with her or is affectionate; he's not charming or funny or in any way, he's not even friendly. In her presence, he doesn't even laugh.
What she doesn't know is that he can be funny and charming and friendly and likeable, just not around her. Which makes a sad amount of sense, and while I think Annie would profit from therapy, she's not delusional. She just has no idea who Anthony Carver is.

Anja does look way older. Having your sophisticated android daughter on the direct path to discovering her own origins will do that to a person. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. This has been sorta speculated on and around before (in the [Kat, Robots...] & [wildspec] discussions), but if Kat is an android made of part Court technology and part Anya's etheric experiments (like her computer), it could explain why she appears as a mecha-Angel when viewed etherically - especially when amplified by the robots' growing cultic beliefs....

well, dear, it all started when our friend Brinnie put on a Surma wig... seriously though, Annie does seem to be unhinged right now, but...I'm glad for it. she's been upset with her dad for a very long time, possibly longer than she even realizes, and has been ignoring it and excusing it. but now that she can't use Kat to be angry for her, she has to finally own up to her own anger, and yeah, that's going to start ruggedly. I mean, so far it's a better start that when she first had to confront her anger when she lost the ability to push it away. No one's on fire this time. I really hope Anja can shed some light here.

Awkward!!! We're going to learn that Surma always knew Tony had a thing for her; then, in a discussion with Eggers (maybe Brinnie was making a move on him), she went on a fit of rage and *ahem*"messed" with Tony, just to prove a point, or get back at Eggers.
And poor Tony never knew why fiery Surma chose him, to this day.

A-and things turned in an awkward direction. Er, remind me again why Annie has reached the conclusion that her father brainwashed her mother? She's bewildered enough... "so greatly has the foot of travel let out the stirrup-holes of belief". Also, her brain may be busy avoiding a more worrisome interpretation.

I don't think Annie's crazy. I just think she is really confused. Why wouldn't she be?
She is also still a very young teen. How old is she, 14-15? How rational were you at that age, especially when it came to your parents?
Not very, that's how rational.

I was hoping that Kat would force Tony to deal with his feelings toward his daughter, but instead it has forced Annie to deal with her feelings toward her father.
Personal background ahead, feel free to skip.
My sister did something like this with our Dad, she defended him and in her mind he was still the dad who loved her when she was little. Meanwhile I hated him for what he did to our family when he left.
15 years after leaving he comes back and wants to get to know us. My sister finds out he was never worth defending, and now has nothing but disdain for him, while I found out he wasn't the monster I pictured him as, and we actually get along well, except that I refuse to interact with him more than is necessary because of my sister (my sister has been awesome for me for my entire life, and my dad is an interesting piece of crap)
So I'm seeing Kat with her perspective, and Annie with hers, and Kat doesn't realize Annie's real feelings because she's hid them and defended her dad, trying to preserve what she has left in this world since her mother died. While Kat just hated his actions toward Annie, which seem to have changed and worked out well if you don't know what we know.
Annie facing her feelings, instead of hiding from them, is a huge step, and great work by Tom to bring us here this way.

This is depressing.
@people Who Don't See Annie's Reasoning: Most of the backstory that Annie has sets her up to view Anthony as joyless and unfriendly, even to his friends. The idea that Anthony could be an enjoyable person is completely lost on her (she only got to hear him out through Kat's dad while he drank).
Yet, he got Surma - a wildfire of a woman - to fall in love with him. Renard has no doubt told her stories of Surma. And now he's making Kat - someone she cares about dearly who hated him - like him. Annie probably thought that gap couldn't be salvaged, but here it is!
Anja probably looks like she does because she's just... sad. She probably had similar thoughts when Surma disappeared off the face of the earth with no warning with Anthony. But we're probably about to get to hear Anja make Annie understand Anthony better. Looking forward to it.

Annie is probably at the breaking point of her self control, to control her own emotions. Coming up with a theory that barely covers the facts is all thats left to explain why HE acts more human with her best friend than with his own daughter

She tried to be a serious loyal daughter and got nothing from it, and now after three days Anthony is bff with Kat? It must look really messed up from her point of view. Given the change in Annie's hair length between This chapter and the last one I think the gap is a lot longer than 3 days. The fact that Annie is actually starting to openly admit that Anthony is an arsehole, rather than defending him all the time is a real step. We might get some Surma and Tony backstory, but I would bet more on us getting Annie breaking down and either facing her father finally, or abandoning Kat and others for defending him.

Now I'm worried about Annie's sanity. Unless I missed an important chapter somewhere? You didn't miss any chapters, Antimony did. True, but to be fair, it I'd say her questioning her mom's own feelings on the man right then and there was still a bit of a surprise as much as there's a reason for her to feel such. I for one expected Annie to still keep the focus on Kat and Dad, rather than Kat, Dad and Mom.

COYOTE LAUGHED AT THIS "What trickery he must have played to lure her away from me" --Renard These words have planted a seed, and Annie's reunion with Anthony has sprouted it. And now we'll finally get to learn how the everloving bismuth could someone leave James for Tony. I am suddenly very excited for this. My longstanding speculation is that Surma demanded Eggers sever his relationship with Jones and his refusal gave Anthony a window of opportunity to move in (and since Eggers disliked Anthony there's bonus points for spite). Hopefully that theory will be proven or disproved in this chapter. That's a good theory...but not complete. It still does not explain what Surma liked about Anthony. In the flashbacks they are in together she does not even talk to him. I really, really hope this means we're going to talk with Renard now. So when I saw this page: AW, COME ON! To be fair, it's been much longer since we last saw Anja. And getting finally some light on that backstory has been in high demand. Also: "Antimony, how well do you know your father?" "...He is a quiet man."

And after living together for most of Antimony's life, Anthony never allowed her to get close to him. Her mother literally had to reassure her that Anthony still loved her. (Which I'm sure he does! But he's had a lifelong problem expressing that, and it's only been exacerbated by Surma's death and his attempts at resurrecting her! That doesn't excuse how coldly he treats her.) Antimony would feel absolutely blessed to get something like a smile out of her dad. But after having spent a few months or weeks with Kat, Anthony's all smiles, dry humor, and science collaboration. And they didn't even tell her about it! He didn't even bother stay to explain what was going on after he and Kat were discovered. Didn't even seem to think it warranted explaining in the first place (and where have we seen that before? "Is it your business?" all over again!) That's painful. That's really painful. If I was Antimony, I might latch onto something like the brainwashing theory. Because the logical conclusion for Annie to come to is that she simply doesn't have anything to offer him, so why should he even bother? She's a sub-par student, she can't talk shop with him, he may very well blame Surma's death on her... but Kat's wonderful! She's a genius, she's basically a mini-Donny, of course her father prefers Kat. But Kat's shown nothing but disdain for him before now, so... Sure, brainwashing's silly. But for Annie, the obvious alternative (that if she'd only been born smarter, she might've earned a little positive attention by now) is just too awful to consider.

And getting finally some light on that backstory has been in high demand. Also: "Antimony, how well do you know your father?" "...He is a quiet man."In absence of information my best guess is that Anthony reached out to Surma, perhaps the first and only time in his life he reached out to anyone since whatever he had for a childhood. Surma, being more extroverted, might seem to be the more likely candidate to have made a first move (and perhaps she flirted as a whim, or because it would rattle Jim-Jim's jimmies, or otherwise did something that would have given him a go-ahead) but if he hadn't opened himself up emotionally at some point would she have made any emotional investment in a relationship with Anthony at all? And if Surma had made the first serious move without some sort of opening on Anthony's part wouldn't she have expected the Brinnie treatment? Did they have anything in common? I have trouble imagining her adjusting a "come-hither" pitch to Anthony's perceived hyper-rationality. Taking that into consideration I figure Anthony likely made the first romantic overture. And I think that such a unique event (along with Anthony being the ultimate anti-Eglamore rebound guy) would be sufficient to explain how Anthony and Surma got together, and Anthony's willingness to work on a "cure" for her would be a reason to stay together regardless if Surma believed he could actually somehow accomplish a work-around for her inevitable death after passing on the fire or no. Am I expecting some sort of plot twist? Sure. Someone else probably did something we don't know about that had an impact on the situation. These things don't happen in a vacuum. Donnie likely put in a good word; perhaps Anja helped early on. Other people (like Eglamore) probably tried to interfere. But I think what's on the table right now would be enough even if we don't learn anything new. The standard trope traumatic/exciting event that pushes them together could encourage Surma and Anthony to become a couple. But I don't expect to see any brainwashing or magic because it's just not needed.

Sure, brainwashing's silly. But for Annie, the obvious alternative (that if she'd only been born smarter, she might've earned a little positive attention by now) is just too awful to consider. I do hope Anthony considers Annie to be smart, because she's his daughter (and I like to think loving parents don't think their kids are stupid?) and also because Annie is very smart and educated on many topics. I mean he loved Surma, and she didn't know much about Super Science herself..I wonder if Anthony thinks Annie is fine with their relationship, or if he loathes himself so much he's become too self centered to think about it ( "She hates me anyway so it doesn't matter"). We really need a "Please Get Therapy" picture... 1. Hard to say. I mean I'm wondering why Annie never seemed to consider asking for help on subjects that confused her in terms of getting a tutor other than simply she thought that she had to accomplish things without asking for help. 2. I guess it explains why he was confused about her asking what happened to his arm, and Zimmy mentioned delivering a message from his daughter, so maybe he thought that it was a direct message from Annie. That said, whether or not Annie knows that Zimmy acted on her behalf, would that part of her resenting Anthony approve or still think that was too much? No,no,no, Annie. The person you should blame for everything is Surma. Going to have to say it's true. Knowing him as well as she did, even when how he likely presented a better side of himself when they got together, did she consider her death a possibility enough to think that Anthony might be emotionally compromised. Or did he make enough of an impression that she hoped he would recover and be strong for their daughter? Considering how she's not morally perfect, I'd question if she cared enough to ponder it, but then she seemed to feel the need to reassure Annie that her father still loved her.

It's not offensive if it's true, which it sadly is all too often. That's what emotional abuse is all about. Not sure if that's the case here, but a blanket statement of 'that is always wrong' in the face of this doesn't strike me as correct either.

What do people think, since when does Annie believe that her dad messed with her mum's mind? Since this page? Or possibly much earlier? If the latter, then maybe she expects everyone else to sort of already know?
