So THIS explains the last treatise page about Kat's symbol on her chest! She gonna be a Shadow (wo)Man. I use that as my phone background and noticed the same thing yesterday! I love the little foreshadowing(yeah, that happened) in those. Edit: Oh neat, my forum account is 7 years old today. How about that?

If the know about Shadow and are now confronting Kat and Annie about their *ahem* extracurricular activities, I can't help but wonder how much else they know about. How much do they know about Jeanne and their rescue/prison break? And what are they going to do with this kind of leverage?

But Kat and Annie are not harboring a fugitive shadowman.
They reported the shadowman to a teacher who is also an advisor to the headmaster. Can't get much more official than that. The shadowman is now enrolled as a student. So the Court is harboring him, and he is not a fugitive (at least, not from the Court's point of view - the shadowmen on the other side of the Annan may have a different opinion).

So THIS explains the last treatise page about Kat's symbol on her chest! She gonna be a Shadow (wo)Man. This may raise a strong parallel: just as Annie was forced into helping the pomps since she needed them to help Smitts, so Kat may be coerced into Shadow-corps to avoid Shadow being deported....

Or this could turn out to be a strong contrast to Annie and the Pomps... Juliette could try to get Kat to join by saying it would help protect Shadow instead of coercing Kat into joining. The facts may be the same, but how Juliette sells it can make a big difference. Kat may also be able to help Annie if Kat can learn more about who is jerking Annie and Anthony around by joining the shadow men. Juliette may not know to offer this carrot, but it is there.

How much do they know about Jeanne and their rescue/prison break? And what are they going to do with this kind of leverage? I wonder whether the Court leadership really *can* punish Annie and Kat over freeing Jeanne - at least, without a lot of subterfuge. The Founders recognized that what they were doing to Jeanne was wrong - which was why they covered it up. They knew that even "reasons of state" couldn't justify their actions, that everyone else in the Court would be horrified by what they had done, and that if they didn't want to be perceived by their own people as monsters, they couldn't let their deed become public knowledge. And the present-day Court leadership cannot be seen as openly supporting or approving of the Founders' act. If they were to come down hard on Annie and Co. for setting free two unjustly murdered and imprisoned souls, they would probably turn practically everyone on the staff below them with a strong sense of right and wrong (Mr. and Mrs. Donlan, Eglamore, Jones, etc.) against them. In fact, the Court leadership declaring itself in favor of the Founders' act and punishing the people who undid it could well be the final blow to convince these people that it had become corrupt - leading possibly to rebellion or mass resignations and departures. The Court leadership's best hope would be to: a) make it look as if they're punishing Annie and Co. for freeing Jeanne on their own rather than coming to the grown-ups for help (but the kind of punishment they'd want to deal out for that would most likely be too harsh for that offense) or b) quietly making the lot of them disappear without a word of explanation (maybe a cover story, or even a claim that "Carver, Donlan, Smith, Parley and the rest nexer existed" - the same "un-personing" the Founders did to Jeanne), followed by a lot of frantic covering-up (like finding Diego's recording of Jeanne's death and erasing it, then finding a way to erase it from the robots' memries). But the "lords of the Court" can't be openly unjust. Even with all the corruption around, the evidence is that most of the people in the Court still have enough of a sense of right and wrong that the actions at the top have to be carefully planned and appear reasonable.

Wow! Awesome page! I admit, I never noticed the security bot present when Robot is predicting a future of biomachines. Which means they are more than closely monitoring his speeches. It might even be mentioned in the mocing chat with Kat. So THIS explains the last treatise page about Kat's symbol on her chest! She gonna be a Shadow (wo)Man. EDIT: added words. I absolutely love these treatises, but I haven't studied them enough. This one is quite nice. Detailing more what will happen, rather than what has happened. As usual, the dualities are strongly present. Annie and Kat, sun and moon, forest and court.... Is there an archive to decode the treatises? I see Zimmy and Gamma there, somewhere over the Bismuth Tree. whatever that is identified by the line-and-dots logo. That's the other thing that these two have in common (that they'll admit in public) - they are part of the Gunnerkrigg Court competitive skateboarding team. I can't believe I forgot about the National Skateboard Roundups and how the Gunnerkrigg Court team smashed their way to the finals. Foolish me

Knew there ought to be more confirmation of Jeanne's affiliation to the Shadow Men. I didn't see this one tagged in the database above. Just threading the needle. Don't think we might have any further appearances. PS: For completeness sake, here's the Shadow Robot-man during the burial of the electrocuted wing.

Looking back at this organization's first appearance led to me noticing that background members of the unit are depicted as flat, black figures with bright eyes, much like actual shadow men: gunnerkrigg.com/?p=721This suggests to me that the two Shadow Men meeting with Kat now are not unusual compared to the rest who went to the power station, and as such it is likely that they are just operatives of the large organization seen in that chapter rather than some super-secret subversive group or other such deal. I'll bite into it and double down. The Court itself is infiltrated by these, shadowy, bright-eyed outlines!
