This is why it's always better to obfuscate or give a sucker answer than a direct lie when you're on uncertain footing. Perhaps Kat could have said, "Oh, um, sorry I never really got into mythical creatures studies." It wouldn't have fooled anyone in this case but at least she'd have come off as being smart. arf: Yea small typographical error in the last panel. Unless "figitive" is a thing.

My mind jumped to "figurative" rather than "fugitive" when I saw figitive, so now I'm imagining she's really into literary analysis.

Possibility of a fake-out: the Shadow Men could be a cabal within the security force itself, working against them, and Juliette is trying to recruit Kat (we know from Anthony, and can infer from the headmaster's behaviour, that the Court is already hostile to Antimony; that's a motive for Kat to help) -- or it's a double fake-out, in which Kat is made to believe she is working against the Court, but actually in its favour.
No idea why else Juliette would break omertà to Kat here, as any generic "administration" could invoke its authority against her, or open itself for negotiations. The most terrifying organizations are rarely those whose whole existence is kept secret rather than whose membership is, anyway.

Unless "figitive" is a thing. Yup, a typo. Should be "fidgitive". It's when the hiding individual is very restless. Also the lady will take off her mask and reveal to be a shadow herself any minute now...

(Signed, a Senior Member) The real secret forces are probably someone else who stay well hidden.. These ones here are probably the "official" shadow men who are sent forth to make someone think they have penetrated the Court's secrets now. But in reality they are just another layer of obfuscation. That, or Juliette might pull an O'Brien (the one from 1984), pretend to be on Kat's side, make her spill (or confirm) the rest of her secrets, then take her to Room 101 for proper brainwashing. In any case, I don't believe those two have come here without invisible backup.

So is Juliette going to give Kat a good stern warning and take Shadow away forever, or is she just here to have a nice chat? Only time will tell.

Eh, this is the part of the Shadow Men they want her to see. Probably just the portion dedicated to looking for this kind of deviant student activity. Their behaviour and deployment seems to suggest a mid-bureaucratic, technical role rather than a leadership one. I expect a mild reprimand and some form of warning/ultimatum which will probably hook in Jones, given her role in helping him hide.

It makes more sense for the badge to represent the open security force we've seen in action in the comic and the Shadowmen to be a faction that includes some of the security force.

If they're there to recruit, I wonder whether Kat or Shadow will be there potential candidate. Then again, they could be looking for intel. If Forest Shadowmen are crossing at an increased rate (no Jeanne), then they may be wondering what's going on, and they hope Shadow might be able to explain it.
I wonder how they'll respond to Shadow being named Shadow: Kate: "He's our friend. His name is Shadow." Juliette: "Shadow? Really?" Kat: "And on the desk is his partner, Robot." Juliette: "Robot? Okay. Now you're just messing with us..."

Wonder how Kat's going to deal with authority. If it was Annie in Kat's position she'd be feeling contempt already. Kat seems to know how to play ball with the Court unlike Annie.

I'm intrigued about what it means for them to work "in secret within the Court".
The Court seems to know of Juliette and Arthur, because it called them in to solve their Ether Station issues. Or is Jones with the Shadow Men too, and were they at the Power Station that night in secret?
Are the Shadow Men a secret organization run by the Court or a secret even to the Court? I'm guessing they're a subversive group within the Court (what Court organization would name themselves after a creature of the Forest, after all?)...
...but given that the Court tracks its students with nanomachines in their food, it would require quite a bit of technology to stay off the radar. Juliette is clearly intrigued by Robot S13's cult, so their role as shadowy observers involves watching the robots (something the Court normally doesn't care about).
And who runs the Court as a whole anyway?? We still don't know.

Oh, Kat. You're as bad at lying as I am. Maybe you could take poker-face lessons from Tony.
So of Juliette and Arthur, which one is the good cop and which one is the bad cop? Kat, on Friday: "Please! Can't you just call... Ms. Jones..."

I suppose the real question is why these shadow men are revealing themselves now. It's possible they just found out about Shadow but it's probable it's because they don't know about some or all of what happened with Jeanne since that happened outside where they would normally be monitoring. They should know something big happened because of the planning sessions and fallout, and perhaps from the kids disappearing from the standard areas. And once they know the details I wonder if the valuable Kat will not be allowed to play with dangerous Antimony anymore. Kat wouldn't want to comply but could be pressured into it.

By hiding Shadow, Annie and Kat appear to have demonstrated an affinity for the goals of the Shadowmen. They can't approach Annie because she is already under suspicion, but Kat is a Court prodigy.

I have no idea what to think of this page. Like, is "the Shadow Men" their band name, or just a really silly name for their division in the Court, or what? We already know because of gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1616 that "shadow man" is what they call creatures like Shadow. So does that suggest Juliette and Arthur ARE disguised shadow men?? I'm brimming with questions. It should be a silly division for the Court. Tose men who protect the Court from the Shadows. Both in a literal (they look after Shadow incursions) and figurative (they do their work unseen, without disturbing others). Addendum: Contrast to the Dragon Slayers, who are very noticeable protectors of the Court. I don't like saying I called it, but..... .... who am I kidding? I <3 LOVE <3 saying I called it ^_^ Even though they could still be one of the more interesting twists of being a super-secret suborganization within the policing whatever that is identified by the line-and-dots logo.

whatever that is identified by the line-and-dots logo. That's the other thing that these two have in common (that they'll admit in public) - they are part of the Gunnerkrigg Court competitive skateboarding team.

Looking back at this organization's first appearance led to me noticing that background members of the unit are depicted as flat, black figures with bright eyes, much like actual shadow men: gunnerkrigg.com/?p=721This suggests to me that the two Shadow Men meeting with Kat now are not unusual compared to the rest who went to the power station, and as such it is likely that they are just operatives of the large organization seen in that chapter rather than some super-secret subversive group or other such deal.

In this case? A stenographic synekdoche, of course, referring to those who wanted to expel Antimony -- perhaps this same group influenced Llanwellyn not to follow Jones' recommendation, perhaps he had different reasons -- and could convince Anthony, who "is in deeper than most", that they held the power to follow up on this threat. (It's possible that they had exaggerated their hostility specifically to blackmail him into returning.) By the same inaccurate conventions, one could designate with the names of nations their spokesmen or sportsmen ("Germany has decided to pass a law regarding [noise]", "Germany has won the World Cup of [noise]") -- suggesting a lack of insight into the actual structures (although, in those cases, this suggestion isn't always part of the intent). Precise choice of cited page.
