Which panel would that be? I'm not quite sure what you're referring to.

That wind-up key looks suspiciously like an ear.

You mean Reynardine demorphing and looking like an angry squirrel/ferret/weasel thing? I thought it was rather funny. Mostly because we've never actually seen the transformation stages before.
Also, Annie and Reynardine in second panel: Awesome.

That wind-up key looks suspiciously like an ear. This actually a very interesting picture! Several thoughs about it: 1. Scientists have bred genetically engineered mice with human ears on their back (This is not fiction, look it up on google. Really bizzare stuff.). 2. Why would they replicate such a thing as a robot at Gunnerkrigg? They obviously like robots a lot, but seriously! 3. The robotic mouse strikes me as a surveillance device. The black, protruding eye reminds me a lot of those security camera domes you often see at public places like train stations. And, well, there's the ear... 4. Somebody now knows about Reynardine. Is it the same person/faction to whom the Tick Tocks belong?

Ooo weird mouse. Pretty creepy too. I wonder if its actually a robot or if it's just a wind-up sort of thing?

The mouse thing looks like it has black inky stuff smeared around it's eye; reminds me of Zimmy (...obviously. :/)
Also, this chapter has it's little icon down below on the main page already which is sooner than usual (or, at least, last time). Also of note, it's something that hasn't appeared yet. Doesn't seem to be anything important but...just noticed. :\

Tic Tocs = parot
Tic tacs = mouse.
Thats what i'll call them LAUGHING ON LINE.
Reyn looks so happy in the first panel. *Sooo happy together....*
Panel 2 is sweet.
man if it werent for the fact that people might freak out, i'd say Reyn stay in wolf form and follow Ann around like a Obidient pet/protector. He'd be like her Familier. That'd be bad ass. i mean he could just keep his mouth shut in front of people not in the know. Though i'm sure people in the court would freak anyway if they saw a student walking around with a larger than standard wolf around her.

The ear/wind up key/thing on the mouse strikes me as odd, if you went to all the trouble of making a miniature surveillance device why would you stick a massive piece of metal on its back or not even attempt to camouflage it? It just doesn't seem right.

Hello gentlemen, first post. The atmosphere of this chapter, especially the last three pages feels a little awkward to me. Probably the events point towards making the mouse notice. the ear on the mouse reminds me of the eye that Miss Donlan wears as a necklace. possibly a connection?
Also, doesn't Annie line "And I didn't even have to issue you a command" strike you as odd? i mean, she did not issue a COMMAND, technically, but she did allow rey to go... well, here is probably my bad English playing me tricks.
PS. anyone cares to explain to me the meaning of the phrase "carrot top"?

'carrot top'= a nickname for redheads, although more usually used with orange hair than really reddish hair like Annie's.

I love Rey's trot though! ;D Welcome, agasa, 'carrot top' is an insult used for red-headed (haired, really) people, because they're hair is orange like a carrot and therefore weird. o.O No one's ever said it's a good insult.

Re. 1: I think the only genetical engineering going on is in making the poor mouse immunodeficient. that said: rather creepy. and creepily similar to our metallic friend indeed.

Forget Rey's transformation -- THAT picture is going to haunt my nightmares.
I doubt the mousebot is connected with the TicTocs. Mousebot is clearly mechanical, where the TicTocs are a good enough imitation of real birds that Annie had to cut one of them open to determine that it's a robot.

It's the other way around: Normally, Rey wouldn't do anything for anybody, not even Annie, unless she commanded him to do it. This time, he did what she wanted him to do, without her having to formulate her request as a command and thus forcing him to do it. The ear/wind up key/thing on the mouse strikes me as odd, if you went to all the trouble of making a miniature surveillance device why would you stick a massive piece of metal on its back or not even attempt to camouflage it? It just doesn't seem right. It could be an antenna camouflaged as something purely ornamental. ;D

A lot of things!!!
1. Rey looks soo funny in pannel 1, like a happy puppy, just to return to it's normal "phe, I don't care"
2. Annie looks cool on pannel 2... altough a little bit older...
3. Rey's tranformation sequence... on of the best pannels ever!!
4. I think that the break line after the train means that they got on the train, and went to the west canals... which means that the last two pannels are in that place.
5. Tic-Tocs see and mouse-bot listens???
6. tetsamaru, I loooove your pics!!!
7. Agree with eightyfour, regarding rey doing something nice for annie

Of course not. He is Reynardine the Great, bodysnatching demi-god extraordinaire! Who also loves his dolls.

I really love the design of the mouse, hooray spinny casters. The ear on the back is just so cool. I would think it is either the listening part of the spying device or just to show that the mouse only records sound and maybe the eyes are merely sensors for moving around. Also memories of the episode of Thunderbirds where The Hood used robotic mice as spies, wouldn’t like to try and crush this one with my fist though. Antimony looks a little different in the second panel; just enough so I can't tell what it is about her look that is different. *Twitch* Also, this may have been brought up when www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=59 came out, but what do you guys think of the similarities between the markings on the front of the train and on the Rogat Orjak's head?

Antimony looks a little different in the second panel; just enough so I can't tell what it is about her look that is different. *Twitch* See her nose? Up till this point Annie's nose has always been indicated by a single, small line, but here her nose is drawn very differently and in more detail--it even covers up her eye a little. I think Tom's art has started to outgrow his original character designs, so I imagine that we'll see more very subtle shifts like this as the characters become more 3d and we see them from new angles. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into a nose. In any case, the characters in this chapter seem to be much more expressive then they have before, and I noticed that the use of shadow has also improved (check out that cast shadow on the ear-mouse--thats some nice stuff right there), so good work Tom, your diligence in improving your work continues to impress.

1. Scientists have bred genetically engineered mice with human ears on their back (This is not fiction, look it up on google. Really bizzare stuff.). No, not genetically. It was implanted. Ask wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacanti_mouseAnyways, I'm guessing the ear mouse robot can hear over large distances. I really wish Tom would tell us how Reynardine is connected to Surma already. It seems odd Annie hasn't asked by now.

I really wish Tom would tell us how Reynardine is connected to Surma already. It seems odd Annie hasn't asked by now. Annie has asked Rey. He's just being a jerkface. The real question is why Annie hasn't asked Kat's parents or Eglamore.

Maybe they don't know. If Surma's as much like her daughter as the other characters say, she probably kept her connections with Reynardine a secret from everyone else.
Also, if the Donlans and Eglamore knew about Surma's ties to Reynardine, they'd probably suspect that that's the real reason why Annie refused to hand Reynardine over to them - the fear that she'd never find out the precise details of the connection if she did - and tell her themselves in order to neutralize Reynardine's subtle hold over her.
As for why Annie doesn't ask them anyway - it might not have occurred to her that they don't know, or she might not trust them, since they seem so connected to the mysterious things going on at Gunnerkrigg. Then again, Annie's seldom taken such a route. (Note that, after hearing Shadow2's story back in Chapter One, she decided to solve the problem herself rather than making another attempt at approaching the teachers, this time telling Shadow2 first not to be so shy and hide himself from them.)

My theory about why she doesn't just ask the Donlans:
Annie spent much of her childhood fending for herself at Good Hope. She's also been able to see the Guides for as long as she can remember, but no one outside her family could see them. These unusual circumstances taught Annie that, aside from her parents, adults and authority figures can't help her, so she has to be self-reliant. Then she came to Gunnerkrigg, and her self-reliance was cemented when her attempt to get help with Shadow2 fell on deaf ears.
Also, I suspect Annie distrusts the Donlans (and Eggers) because they waited until ch 7 to tell her that they knew her parents.

I noticed this too, and i do not generally like unexplained character derailment...are we only paranoid, or there is some better theory around?

I happen to think Ann's in character. Not all character development has to happen on screen after all. We havent seen Reyn in a while, and all of a sudden its like they're best freinds.
