Cookies to the lurker from back in the thread for www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1693 : *Peeks out of lurking hole* Calling it now. The strings are attached to Jean, or failing that, her lover (as in they'll disappear into the river). *Ducks back into lurking hole* I don't think that the strings being attached to Jeanne now means they always were; it's just that she's what Smitty (and his power) is focused on at this moment.

I just realized what happened on this page: Smitty's sweater fortuitously unraveled and snarled around Jeanne's hands!
Wake up sheeple the evidence is clear.

It might have been shocking for a split-second but I really feel that anyone who's complaining about this being a "cop-out" or something didn't stop to think about it even the slightest bit. Disclaimer: I don't think it was a cop-out, especially given the nature of the story to date. I think the whole scene was exceptionally well done. As I understand it, though, the cop-out argument is not necessarily about not having the blow land, but recognizing and utilizing the shock of the image without having ever intended to absorb the consequences. Personally, I feel it was a great way to remind the audience of the severity of the situation, and how much danger this group has put themselves in. 'Knowing' it is one thing, but seeing it is something else entirely.
