...I really just think it's the last three letters of his name, that's he's turned around, warped and otherwise played with as a personal trademark.

Thread Necro.
Couldn't it be his THX1138? Like George Lucas' number?

I think I jsut found the first use of The 113 in Gunnerkrigg. I was loking specifically for it... I think it's here on the lock Annie's picking. Hard to tell, but it looks like it.

not truly a necro. Just that its scope of updating is based on the 113 occuring. and its not that often.

its upside down, or well since its a scarf, its turned to the other side.
dimension and direction doesnt matter in such terms.

Anyhow, relating to numbers and math, I noticed that the height/width ratio for the comic is near exactly the square root of 2. I know, why was I looking at that? Well, yeah... Just tossing it out there.

Honestly, I'd quicker believe it's just a little... filler. Something he sticks up when he has nothing else to write. I know that I have things like that in my own art. I know it's not the most exciting answer, but not everything has to have a hidden meaning. It does make for a very fun little hunt through the comic, though.

Well I feel stupid, now. But hey, I'm American. Different ways. (Not saying that being American is an excuse for stupidity. XD)

There are probably a lot europeans who don't know that either and: You noticed the ratio is sqrt(2) - that's something! I once told two girls that the number their calculator showed was sqrt(2) - they stared as if I had just worked a miracle *gg* (Not saying girls can't do math. In fact I believe most of them suffer from bad teaching and low expectations.)

Is it possible that he put it there in order to mess with the people who always look for some sort of hint.

He did it (quite obviously) to ease the printing of the books and avoid resizing or cropping. I'm surprised by how much you people try to find hidden meanings in this.

You mean the paper ratio? I don't think Tom had a book in mind when "chosing" that size - the main reason for the comic's ratio matching the ratio of paper is probably that Tom used to draw his comics on paper The tablet he's using now might have that ratio too.

He's said that from the beginning he was intending to get his comic printed, so agasa's right.

I used to draw my comic on A4 paper, which is why the comic is A4 size. This is also a standard print size in the UK.

I agree that it isn't 113.
Ell is an architectural term for the wing of a building, and doesn't virtually the whole story take place in one big building?

One enormous grouping of buildings, really.

I once told two girls that the number their calculator showed was sqrt(2) - they stared as if I had just worked a miracle *gg* I was once walking along the sides of a square courtyard on campus, and tried to figure out how quickly I'd have to walk to get to the opposite corner ahead of the people who were walking on the diagonal. So I assigned each side a length of 1, used the pythagorean theorem for the hypotenuse, and started trying to interpolate the answer. It was between 1.4 and 1.5, about 1.41something, and then *facepalm*

I wonder why nobody pointed this out before, but here's another appearance. (spoiler: panel 4, boards on the floor) I agree that it isn't 113. Ell is an architectural term for the wing of a building, and doesn't virtually the whole story take place in one big building? "Ell" in this context is simply the pronunciation of the letter "L" as in "L-shaped building". It is an informal way of referring to the shorter part (wing) of such a building. It's like calling a T-shirt a "tee". On the contrary, I am quite sure that it IS the number 113; it appears in the comic as a number, here and in other places. In the unlikely case that it is an acronym after all, it would read "EII" not "ELL".

I wonder why nobody pointed this out before, but here's another appearance. It was pointed out in the comments. There are probably more cases of 113s found in individual comic threads and comments that weren't posted here. Maybe there should be a 113 page on the wiki with a comprehensive list of spottings?
