It seems like Kat will stand up for Antimony if not for herself. Hm, the previous flashback comics now appear to fit well with current events.

It really provides a good insight into her character. She knows what it's like to have to deal with people like that and refuses to let Annie go through the same.
That said, Annie does deal with it rather well anyway.

Yeah, it would seem that Annie just lets heckling roll off her back. Like, anyone who would heckle her is someone whose opinion she doesn't care about in the slightest.
It was nice of Kat to stand up for Annie, but I hope she didn't just make this worse.
I think it's funny how in panel 3, the brown-haired guy's expression is exactly the same as his t-shirt.
EDIT: I wonder where the symbol on Kat's hoodie comes from.

I'm kind of hoping those kids move in to tease them up close, then Reynardine says something and scares the shit out of them.

A "Born to heckle" shirt would be nice. But I'd prefer one with monster trucks and rockin' electric guitars.

I wouldn't recommend turning Reynardine loose on that lot; it would probably only make the situation worse in the end. Besides, those three aren't worth it. Annie seems to have the right idea: ignore them.
But it's just like Kat to let those three have it, even though she's not the one being jeered at. Nobody insults her best friend with impunity, while she's around.

If he did that, this'd end up being the shortest chapter in all of Gunnerkrigg. Kat and Annie: Man, everyone's all raggin' on us for getting straight As and not hanging with the cool kids. After all that building robots and talking to spirits, this is a total downer. Cool jerks: You guys suck! Reynardine: RAHR! They do not! Everyone: I... well, I dunno what to do now. That sure was an awkward resolution. CREDITS ROLL

Hm, this is interesting. Kat may be the local scientific genius, but she seems to be lacking in the understanding of anatomy. Antimony, on the other hand, appears to be have a pretty firm grasp on the subject, as already seen here. Growing up in a hospital with a surgeon father rubs off, apparently.

Might not be something Kat was interested in. Everything we've seen from her so far has been more on the physics and engineering side of things.

Wait, is there a similar nature/magic-technology contrast between Annie and Kat as with the Court and Gillitie(sp?)? Then again, Annie DID build a robot.

It's depicted in the second treatise, and to a lesser extent in the first. But its important to remember that things aren't black and white in Gunnerkrigg.

This whole science/nature thing bewteen Kat and Annie goes like forever... and it's kinda of cute... and also a way of showing that such co-existence is possible.

I was thinking the same thing. I guess they'll have to combine their expertise if they're going to make a realistic android.

I've always thought the science/nature relationship between annie and kat was never really spot on considering annie built a robot.

Well, Annie didn't really build a robot. She basically just put all the parts back together, she didn't construct it herself. Depending on how well designed the robot is, that could be about as complicated as Lego.

...so, they're both talking about an android? Annie sharing his knowledge about how a human body works and Kat trying to emulate such conditions by mechanics (or hydraulics, like she pointed out)

Fun, completely irrelevant side note:
Muscle function can be more closely emulated by nitinol, a substance that contracts when electricity is applied. It is used as a muscle in Stiquito robots, for example (stiquito.com).
It would appear that Kat intends to use hydraulics for movement. Of course, what is vastly more interesting and complicated is how she intends to emulate the sense of touch, or smell, or hearing. All three require complex sensors and difficult computations to process.

Touch they may have a headstart on. Dr. Disaster's suites could make holograms appear to feel solid. They could probably use similar technology for that particular sense.
