It did my mood good to reconstruct the cussing after seeing the results of the UK referendum this morning. Heh.
I'm imagining any of the adult men I know being so disgusted and disgruntled about another man of our acquaintance to such a degree that he would vent his feelings in that sort of language to a teenage girl. Jesus, better keep James and Tony separated.

During "The Tree" many readers felt the same way about that [man]. Edit: typo.

I love Eggers a little more now. And I...*kinda* want a confrontation? Like, on the one hand I feel like Jimmy has his own biases and personal reasons to hate Anthony and could make things worse. On the other hand, it kind of feels like there needs to be an adult who will call out Tony on his shit. He's acting like the child of the two, when Annie has needed a grown-up to be there for her for a long time now.

How angry is he? Also will we learn why he is so very angry?

I feel Parley is editting the transcript a little so that it is suitable for year nines.

Parley is lucky that there wasn't oracle training going on at the same time. Because then it would have been a time of poor tents.

Since my opinion that Eglamore would not tell Parley very much lies tattered on the ground, I'll just say that the campfire light seems to take years off of Eglamore.

I think that's a little unfair, but to each their own. Judging by Parley's wonderfully expressive face, I would think Eglamore probably is opening up a little faster than he should in front of his pupil. She probably hasn't fully adjusted to thinking of Eglamore as a friend rather than strictly as a mentor.

Eglamore needs to relax. Perhaps, an extra tent for himself would help. He's clearly two tents.

But oh well. *shrug* edit: I think his attitde (at least what we've been shown so far) reminds me of some people's attitude in real life which I can't stand. An attitude that I sometimes have as well and can't stand myself for. I don't feel a shred of sympathy for him here.
Though my conclusion from this is: Tom's a damn good writer!

Though my conclusion from this is: Tom's a damn good writer! The biggest problem isn't that Eglamore has these opinions, it is that he is airing them with a young protege. This is how you pass on prejudices. He obviously has unresolved issues with Tony. He may be avoiding Annie's dad because of his anger. Eglamore should be working through these feeling with a trained councilor not an impressionable apprentice. Eglamore has been there for Annie when her dad wasn't. He no doubt cares for her and isn't happy about how she's being treated. Pff, if things had worked out differently Annie could have been his child. While a confrontation between Tony and Jimmy might be interesting it would probably not be productive. Jimmy has always had a hot temper and in the past was more likely to throw a punch that a well thought out argument. There is no honor in punching a shell of a man with only one hand. Parley just got back from a time of intense training and she is decompressing. She hasn't had time to process everything that has happened nor does she have the experience to realize this might be something to keep to herself or at least not share with Annie. What Annie does with this info something else entirely.

Though my conclusion from this is: Tom's a damn good writer![...] Eglamore has been there for Annie when her dad wasn't. [...] I think this is where my interpretation differs a bit. I don't see Jims as having been there for Annie like Anja and Donald (and her two dog dads). Instead I see him as having very complicated feelings towards her. She is... Surma's child -> a constant reminder of his lost love Anthony's child -> a constant reminder of the (supposed) reason he lost his love; also his love's cause of death Anthony's victim -> a reason to pity* her, and fuel his anger towards Anthony a student -> a reason to distance himself from her a troublesome student -> a reminder of his own mischievous past carelessly frolicking with Coyote and co. -> a reason to worry about her safety/scold her Of course he's not as bad as Anthony; at least he acts as an authority figure in Annies life. But he hasn't been able to really get along well with her, hence the rather distanced greeting earlier this chapter. The attitude I don't like about him is his (seemingly) superficial but irreconcilable scorn for Anthony. The only reasons for this we've been shown so far are: -young Anthony's weird and unsocial behavious ("who talks like that?") -Surma leaving him for Anthony ("What is wrong with me?") His reactions to things that happened later (Surma's death, Annie's breakdown) are already coloured by his hatered. I don't see these two reasons as enough to fuel the level of hatered we've been shown. Unless of course Eggers is an egotistical and unsympathetic a**h***. And frankly, todays page makes him look like a violent sociopath to me. Now, what I'm hoping for in the following pages and in later chapter is some sort of "tragic backstory" for Eggers which will also give us a "proper" reason for all this nonsense and make me empathize with him more. Knowing Gunnerkrigg Court I doubt it'll be that simple though. *I say "pity" because when Anthony is concerned I don't see Eggers caring about Annie's wellbeing, instead he's using Annie's state as justification for his rage.edit: Don't get me wrong, I like Eggers as a complex, nuanced character. Just the same way I like Anthony.

Even though you mentioned it, I don't feel like you're giving it enough importance... Surma, someone he loved and was with for what seems like years and years, left Eggers for Anthony. We don't know the exact context of timeframe, whether it was sudden or a long time coming, or why, but that probably really messed him up in general, but especially concerning his relationship with Anthony.
Like... that's enough of a reason to hate someone, all by itself. It may not be mature or adult to harbor a grudge for so long, but I imagine that's the biggest driving force for his scorn.

[...] I definitely agree with you that Jimmy Jims has complicated feelings towards her, but I get the feeling he does genuinely care, if rather awkwardly. Personally...and it may just be me being a Reasonable Gunnerkrigg Court Reader (TM)... but I actually can't figure out why Annie has been unfriendly towards Eglamore practically since the beginning. The only thing I can really come up with is he possibly tried to be too "dad" towards her a few times but then Rey outright said he would have been a better father than Tony and was forgiven for it.
as far as James hating Tony with such passion, I'm guessing that answer lies in his and Surma's breakup. They were fine as a couple somewhere into his training so Surma left him for Tony (of all people) probably towards the end. There's a lot of BWUUHH?? still unanswered there. What did he promise her? Were her feelings for Tony genuine? Why did they leave the Court? WHY TONY?

Knowing Gunnerkrigg Court I doubt it'll be that simple though. Your argument is quite good and complex, and I think it gathers the most important aspects about Eglamore. So most of it, I agree with. Where I differ slightly is both in the resulting opinion about him and in the importance of some points. For me, James holding a grudge against Anthony (someone who he seemingly didn't get along too well with when they where younger, and who in addition ended up with the woman he loved, even though it was probably his own fault to a large extent) is something that does not make me dislike him. Inmature and good for nothing attitude, yes. But, hell, I cannot be certain that given the same circumstances (let alone the whole elemental thing), I would be more understanding towards Anthony. Also, about his attitude in this particular page, I would not call him a violent sociopath. He does say that he would, uh, hurt him a lot, but that sounds to me like something an angry person (and Tony's sudden appearance and his incredible parenting abilities do sound as an understandable source of anger), would say to feel better and vent, rather than something he might actually want to do (I think he does care for Annie, even if it's only because she's the daughter of Surma, and I doubt he would want to worsen the situation). And about the difference between actually caring and using it as justification for rage, I would like to add that, while you may be right about it, I really don't think the two options are mutually exclusive. In fact, given that James actually felt rage towards Anthony before he came back, it sounds unlikely to me that if he truly cared about Annie's well-being, Mr Carver's actions would not also serve as a justification for his former anger.

Knowing Gunnerkrigg Court I doubt it'll be that simple though. I believe Eglamore intensely dislikes Anthony because Eglamore blames Anthony for Surma's death. They all knew what would happen if Surma got pregnant and Anthony got her pregnant.* We don't know when Surma broke it off with Eglamore nor do we know all the reasons why she broke it off, but I've wondered if the final break came after Eglamore wouldn't agree to be part of her pregnancy. * Assuming Human-Fire Elemental Hybrids don't reproduce through spontaneous pregnancy, a pet theory of mine. A lot of holes have been shot in that theory, including the fact that Anthony has never denied being Annie's father. Who knows (except Tom), maybe there will still be a big "Annie, I am not your biological father" reveal.

Also will we learn why he is so very angry? I think it also demonstrates that to Eggers, Parley is now a peer, not a teenage school student. As was also demonstrated a couple of pages back: when Eggles told Parley what great progress she'd made and she said "Thank you, James" instead of "Thank you, Mr. Eglamore." "In tents." "In Tents." "IN [GOSH DARN FREAKING DOODLE DING-DONG TREEHOUSE RUNNING OXYGENATED SIDEWAYS HELLO POPE] TENTS!"Haha, do you read PS238? That sounds like something Zodon would say. (For those not familiar, Zodon is a very profane young supervillain who effectively has a chip in his brain that replaces his swear words with random non-swearwords. If he goes into an extended rant, the chip replaces it all with the lyrics to show tunes. The only rants that make me laugh harder than Zodon's are those of Sydney from Grrl Power, which have been known to make sailors blush despite containing very little actual profanity.)
