At first I didn't get the last sentence before I realized Annie changed her intended meaning partway through.

I'm pretty sure there's more than that. Jim didn't seem to like Tony much even before he got the girl.

Jim didn't seem to like Tony much even before he got the girl. Well, I always thought they were just too different to get along, not that there was some kind of quarrel.

If I were Smitty, I'd be slightly worried by panel 2.

So, next time we see P+S again Parley is gonna be eating something while Smitty'll have some body parts bandaged. Yes.

It took me a minute to understand that last panel. I kind of wish Tom had done it as two identical panels, with one following the other.

I still find myself doubtful that Annie can believe anything bad about her father.

There goes her student glassware budget. Maybe, they'll provide for better tableware. Stainless Steel? Solo? Please don't troll us on Friday, Tom. Please.

I still find myself doubtful that Annie can believe anything bad about her father. What Eglamore thinks of Tony would be a rabbit hole for the story. We would find out a few things but it will be twisty. POV will be slanted. Annie, who has a lot of anger and some seriously unsettled issues will be jumping to conclusions. Fun times ahead.

I'm pretty sure there's more than that. Jim didn't seem to like Tony much even before he got the girl. Hm. Those two pages juxtaposed have some interesting possible implications. Eglamore has a special relationship with Jones, and did even when he was young -- "I wish Jones could have been in the photo". But Surma can't stand her. Maybe Surma chose Anthony over Eglamore specifically because being around Eglamore meant being around Jones. Who knows? Maybe Jones even deliberately drove Surma away.

It's too bad that Macklemore doesn't like Annie's dad.

I'm disappointed in myself for not recognizing the quote immediately but I'm proud that I managed to make the connection BEFORE I clicked on the link. So that's a wash, I guess? Also, took me a couple of tries before I figured out what was going on in that last panel.

Between the prune juice and Annie finally being willing (even eager!) to hear uncomplimentary things about her dad, I haven't grinned that hard at the crack of dawn in a long time.

Maybe Surma chose Anthony over Eglamore specifically because being around Eglamore meant being around Jones. Who knows? Maybe Jones even deliberately drove Surma away. So far what we've seen in the comic indicates that Surma dumped Jimmy Jims because he was absent too much for his training. As the Court Protector, Eglamore was committed to Court and Surma left the Court after the Renard affair. But we don't know if they split before the Renard affair, or if the Renard affair was part of the break up. On a general note, I normally would doubt that Eglamore would tell Parley much about Anthony or Surma. But maybe Eglamore opened up to warn Parley about the strain being a Protector will put on her relationship with Smitty.

There are some clues but until we get the story it's all speculation about the past. Of course we could get an unreliable narrator.

Eglamore isn't a fan of Tony Carver. In other news, water is wet.
Is there anyone who's a fan of Annie's father, I wonder? Because that'd be a twist.

I notice some of the commenters were wondering where Parley's second glass of prune juice came from -- the one she's drinking from in panel 6. I suspect that, off panel, Smitty probably twiddled his fingers and made her broken glass jump back together and all the spilled juice jump back into the glass. After all, Smitty's basically an Infinite Improbability Drive with eyebrows, right?

Kat's parents were friends with Tony, and Donny was the first person Tony trusted enough to open up to about his absence. Tony still has Mr. and Mrs. Donlan as friends, but his absence for 16ish years has definitely put a damper on that. He is a very lonely person right now, even if his actions are to blame for a lot of what has happened. I hope we can get more backstory, and maybe see him change for the better. Despite his unlikable nature in the present, I can't help but see him as one of the tragic characters in GKC.
