And noooow... kiss! This scene is hilarious and sad at the same time, poor Janet. There's this funny theme going on, of Annie witnessing different relationships, not really getting what the whole deal is about. Like Parley+Smitty, Zimmy+Gamma, Jack+Jenny, even Paz+Kat to some extent. Are Will+Janet going to be the next couple in this line? Unless of course, even after this whole ordeal Annie (and the rest) stil doesn't get that they are an item, haha.

I was reading through the archives and stumbled upon this page ... it kind of seems to mirror what Annie is going through at the moment: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=940This, coupled with the fact that the chapter is titled "Keeping it Together" gives me the thought that maybe this chapter is going to be about Annie finally reconnecting with her fire elemental self--through this monumentally bad idea of trying to (fake)pair her up with Winsbury. Though this probably has been mentioned before.

I just love how adorable Janet looks in that 4th panel. She's all pigeon toed and wrists flared out, like it took all of her courage to actually go into the room and confront Annie and Wins.
It's just too bad that their open and honest confession scene had to be at Annie's expense.

The face of every teenager asking someone out. The face of every 70 year old masquerading as a teen. Look at that terrifying thing. Oh, I get it now. Extreme measures on everyone's part but Janet's to find a stooge to force Janet into a positive declaration, eh. Apparently even Winsbury himself didn't know if he and Janet were truly an item. Presumably he could settle for Annie if Janet refused to commit. If I were Annie just the sheer tawdriness of the insult would probably have me burning improper language into random objects. I...don't see how that's where you jumped to. I don't think this is about a fake girlfriend thing, if for no other reason that this would have been even worse as a fake "wanna go out with me" speech. I guess the gang pushed Winsbury into it, since they thought he was single, and he and Janet went along with it because they (still!) weren't quite ready to announce their relationship. Seems they have no other choice now. That's where my guess is at this point as well. (Still a horrible idea by Kat and everyone else to try and set her up with Winsbury. What were they thinking?!?) That's what I've been trying to figure out this whole chapter. The hell are Kat and Paz thinking?

Perhaps Rey is threatening to kill Janet if she doesn't stop him! (Joke post) Actually, this has possibilities! Perhaps Rey told Janet about 'the thing in the pit', and suggested a meeting?
In other news, a little while ago, I ran a poll to see what form (if any) people would like to see submitted in the way of a Hugo nomination for GC (Graphical Story category). This is simply a reminder that anyone wishing to place a nomination has until March 31 to do so. (the consensus was for nominating Chapters 50-55, but you might prefer Cityface's Bird Guide!). NB: you do have to register with MidAmeriCon 2 ie pay.

Thank you, Tom, for giving us more fodder for future Gunnerkrigg Court Memes. That second panel makes me so happy.
Also, I'm really happy he's not actually going to ask her out.
Thank you, Tom, for giving us this plot twist.

I could eat the expressions in the last two comics. Just gobble them right up. (Winsbury looks like he's been losing sleep over this, unless those bags under his eyes were always there and I've forgotten). www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=18Literally his first appearance. He's always had those circles. I think he's just always been a college student.

On one hand, Wintsbury's relief mirrors my own. On the other hand, I can't imagine somebody saying "Oh thank god" at the prospect of not having to ask you out is super flattering for Annie. She's getting used to it.When you put it like that . . . OUCH. Poor kid.

Looks like something like this went down - Winsbury wanted to take the relationship public. Janet said no, they had a fight and broke up. At some point Winsbury said something on these lines: 'Maybe I should just ask Annie out!' He was overheard by Paz/Kat. Things spiralled out of control, and here we are!
Also - hi guys! Long time lurker here!

The heck is wrong with the art here? Winsbury looks like he's becoming the Incredible Melting Man due to using so much hair gel, Janet doesn't look much better, and Annie's eyes in the last panel weird me the heck out.

When you put it like that . . . OUCH. Poor kid. The first time was a definite slap down, gently re-enforced later. Quite right, too: Annie was being uncharacteristically bitchy, there. (As to why, let's just say she was acting on bad advice and... yes, poor kid.)

I think a theory I read in the comments is most likely true: They planned to get Annie as a fake girlfriend to hide from the principal. That was certainly the theory I ascribed to. But actually, now I feel like instead of proving that theory, today's comic undermines it. It looks WAY more like Winsbury was pressured into this scenario by their friends, and Janet & Winsbury awkwardly went along with it in order to maintain their ruse. Janet is now coming to his rescue because she'd rather risk everyone knowing the truth than seeing him carry out this charade.

A little heavy on the mouth lines, perhaps? (Makes him look a bit like the Headmaster. Which is... a bit too creepy, considering who Janet is.) Otherwise, Tom's still got a bit of work to do on the texture of tears/sweat.

Why do people think the gang doesn't know about Willie and Janet's relationship? the cat's out of the bag here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=935 This ^^ To quote the person who answered this already in the thread: The heck is wrong with the art here? Winsbury looks like he's becoming the Incredible Melting Man due to using so much hair gel, Janet doesn't look much better, and Annie's eyes in the last panel weird me the heck out. Yeah, the art in this chapter is...I'm not going to say "rough", but it's weird for sure. EDIT: It's not really the chapter as a whole, it's mostly just things relating to William and co. Will in particular. What is going on with the art on him. I think a theory I read in the comments is most likely true: They planned to get Annie as a fake girlfriend to hide from the principal. That was certainly the theory I ascribed to. But actually, now I feel like instead of proving that theory, today's comic undermines it. For a fake girlfriend, the gal needs to know what's going on. Unless the plan was to have her think it was real and just cheat on her or something gross like that.

So far I'm seeing the most extreme reaction from her being something like "uh... what?" This is still a dumb setup on the part of her friends, but I don't see her walking away really scarred or anything. Unless she suddenly gets violently upset in the next page or so. Yes, but Annie doesn't need to get violently upset to have someone else crawl away scarred. Seeing how she torched that lane, it's on hair-trigger. Of course William is sweating - he's no fool. Then again, it was William who disentangled starting Paz & Matt mess. He knows it's no good either way. Seriously, messing with Annie's head like that for the sake of drama? How could anyone think that'd be a good idea??? How could Kat and Paz agree to go along with it? To cheer her up? Someone would pay attention to her and it does look like not leaving her alone for too long is a good idea, whether Kat knows that Annie already did something crazy reckless or not. Besides, Kat & Paz may be just in "viral newlyweds" mode right now and didn't think it through in all the excitement. On one hand, Wintsbury's relief mirrors my own. On the other hand, I can't imagine somebody saying "Oh thank god" at the prospect of not having to ask you out is super flattering for Annie. She's getting used to it. Also true. The question is, whether remembering this will make Annie laugh her butt off or enrage her. Another question is whether there's a difference between those reactions for fire hazard purpose. I just love how adorable Janet looks in that 4th panel. Annie may adorbs out, too. We also don't know what she thinks of Janet. May well be some admiration and/or envy there.

I must admit that I can't wait for the plot to be about non-relationship matters again... I very strongly agree. I know in the long run this character development will be an important part of the story, but I really want it to get past this arc and move on. What I really want is for the entire story to be written, so I can read it cover to cover. And then forget all of it, so that I can read it again for the first time. The impatient part of me very much agrees and wants to know more about Court secrets BUT I think this will be absolutely awesome to read as a book later on. The character development is essential, and you can't throw in an event like Tony returning (especially in the way he did) and not take the time to deal with the fallout. Tom's a better storyteller than that, and the story as a whole is better off for it. The curse of the page-a-day format

I really don't think Janet and Winsbury were together until just now, they must have had a fight of some sorts. Being (prentending to be) single doesn't mean you have to date any girl your friends propose. If Winsbury really wanted to avoid dating Annie, there were a number of easy ways out, from "Sure Annie's nice, but I don't actually like her that way" up to "I'm actually secretly in love with a passing chinese goddess".

I think the only thing Annie will be potentially upset about is being lied to/manipulated. Her face doesn't exactly scream "Oh boy, I think this person likes me and he might be about to ask me out!"
Maybe now Janet and William will man up and ask for her help.
