I'm actually glad he's not gonna ask Annie out. I don't think she is in the right mental place for a relationship. I really want some answers from William and Janet, though...

Thank god indeed I don't think this is about a fake girlfriend thing, if for no other reason that this would have been even worse as a fake "wanna go out with me" speech. I guess the gang pushed Winsbury into it, since they thought he was single, and he and Janet went along with it because they (still!) weren't quite ready to announce their relationship. Seems they have no other choice now. I think Annie is more confused and maybe mildly scared by other people's behaviour than disappointed, as usual. (Still a horrible idea by Kat and everyone else to try and set her up with Winsbury. What were they thinking?!?)

You're kiddin, right? I was just about to leave an ironic comment about him being the true the sultan of seduction, but it appears that this "with gun to my head, I prefer asking you out to dying" -face of his is sexy for some. On a more serious note, the way this goes now turns pretty cruel to Annie. Had they (whoever are plotting and what) been explaining this fairly and openly to Annie, it could have been alright, but seriously asking her to be his girlfriend without telling her the real situation and then that "oh thank god!" when he doesn't have to... How smooth and considerate from you, Will. which of those emoji is rolleyes? You can find one or two that resemble rolling eyes in the little emoji drop down window that pops up in the advanced reply page. It's labeled with a yellow smiley. Oh, I know the emoji-box, but just can't find there a one sardonically rolling his eyes.

William's face is hilarious but I wish Annie had a happy, quiet evening with friends instead of whatever is going on here. If that happened to me I would also think the whole "we miss you" speech was a lie. Does she need more drama in her life? Geese, no Annie does not need any more drama. Annie has enough on her plate without the complication of a boy friend. The last thing William needs is a girlfriend who can turn into a thermal nuclear reactor. All of this makes me think, "Kids!" Yes, eye rolling. William looks like he hasn't been sleeping well. As if he has been wrestling with a quandary.

Oh wow, more fuel to the parallels of Gunnerkrigg. Is it just me, or does Winsbury look more and more like a certain young man from the forest we have seen briefly in 'Coward Heart': gunnerkrigg.com/?p=770Jeanne and Janet, both women from the court who were and are fighters and had to hide their love ... oh, I hope this ends well for Janet. Jeanne didn't have an Annie. ☺

bluh, so yeah, either Willie and Janet were going to use a fake relationship with Annie to hide from the headmaster--in which case why the sincere sounding speech, were they not going to let Annie in on it?? or Willie was going to ask Annie out in order to push Janet to do something. I hope neither scenario is true because that would take away a lot of coolness points from them (and I really want to like both of them!!) And that would make 2 guys that has made moves towards Annie, whether she wanted them or not, and they were like j/k I love someone else!

Seems they have no other choice now. I agree. I think Winsbury really does like Annie as a person, and Kat, being Kat, thought he was in luuuurve and HAD to set them up. She probably brought it up to the group and Janet at some point probably burst out "YEAH YOU SHOULD TOTALLY DO IT IT'S NOT LIKE THERE'S ANYONE ELSE YOU'RE INTERESTED IN OR ANYTHING" and stormed off.

In which we are about to discover in what shape Annie's brain really is. Also, whether she's secretly fond of these dorks or considers them almost as insufferable as Parley and Smitty were. Then again, Annie of all people may understand Janet's problem. Winsbury is Whiiiiiiiiiiipped His freaking face is almost melting Yes, but is he relieved because A) he won't have to drag himself through the rest of this "speech"? B) calling this plan off drastically reduces probability of him winding up extra-crispy? C) look, Janet cares? D) Janet stormed in unarmed?

I must admit that I can't wait for the plot to be about non-relationship matters again... I very strongly agree. I know in the long run this character development will be an important part of the story, but I really want it to get past this arc and move on. What I really want is for the entire story to be written, so I can read it cover to cover. And then forget all of it, so that I can read it again for the first time.

It's possible that, the only faux pas are Kat and the gang thinking Annie should get a boyfriend, and Janet and Winsbury not admitting their relationship from the start. Winsbury was probably genuinely concerned about Annie, and the others thought it was romantic, as they didn't know about Janet. I know many are concerned with Annie's reaction, but she could very well find this funny. Maybe even find relief, in that others can have weird backwards problems exploding in their face. As their friend and a good person, how would we act in Annie's place?

Oooookay. Here I was on Monday, thinking his awkwardness sounded sincere. And here is how I read the new situation: Winsbury went along with the (Janet's?) plan only reluctantly, and he is truly relieved he doesn't have to go through with it. Let's see how wrong I am this time.

"Oh thank god!" Winsbury inadvertently channeling the thoughts of a thousand readers. Something like that. ... still wondering where the heck this is going. I hope this doesn't just further isolate Annie. She's on the brink of breaking through. So far I'm seeing the most extreme reaction from her being something like "uh... what?" This is still a dumb setup on the part of her friends, but I don't see her walking away really scarred or anything. Unless she suddenly gets violently upset in the next page or so.

Looks to me more like the aftermath of a tiff than a plan. Like, they have a fight Janet says "We're through!" and Winsbury says "Fine! I always wanted to date other girls anyway -- maybe I'll ask Antimony to be my girlfriend!" but he doesn't really mean it, he just wants Janet to be afraid of losing him for real. Which is why he chose Antimony, of course, because Antimony terrifies him and so that's the first name he thinks of when he wants to make Janet afraid. But Janet doesn't back down, so he has to go through with it in order to avoid losing face. Hence his relief at her arrival. If that's really what has been going on, I'm gonna have to flip a table Seriously, messing with Annie's head like that for the sake of drama? How could anyone think that'd be a good idea??? How could Kat and Paz agree to go along with it? (And don't get me started on Winsbury's face. I'm not even gonna talk about that. I won't)

On one hand, Wintsbury's relief mirrors my own. On the other hand, I can't imagine somebody saying "Oh thank god" at the prospect of not having to ask you out is super flattering for Annie.

Of course Annie will be upset. She thought the nice card mainly from him was a sarcastic joke at her expense. Now all this? This is awful, no matter whose plan it is. This is Annie's first nice night out of her horrible lab cave thing with her friends and weee everyone's here and we miss you Annie weee we're bowling I'm not very good but it's fun - but psyche! We didn't really want you to come, we just needed a pawn in our plan! Back to your cave! PS No-one really likes you for who you are because you're weird and wrong to the core!
Awful!

I think a theory I read in the comments is most likely true: They planned to get Annie as a fake girlfriend to hide from the principal. I am thinking along these lines, too. And it better be. Because Tom can mess with Annie or Kat or any of these other characters. But. He doesn't. Get. To screw up. William. And Janet.

Annie, Janet, and William appear to be alone in the storeroom. That gives them the privacy to be honest with each other and then the opportunity to plan their own shenanigans. I like Kat, and she meant well, but I think she is due for some mild comeuppance.

Granted this may just be a sports-specific trigger, but I could see her getting angry here and not bothering to be reasonable or allow her friends to explain. The group activity was a good idea and they should've just stuck with that.

I could eat the expressions in the last two comics. Just gobble them right up.
(Winsbury looks like he's been losing sleep over this, unless those bags under his eyes were always there and I've forgotten).

I still don't think this was a plan, far too much drama and tears for that. And William did seem sincere about asking her out, possibly pushed by well-meaning friends or simply because he didn't want to stay single. My guess is that Janet and him broke up for all the wrong reasons, and were both torn about it. William then started looking elsewhere and probably does like Annie, although his heart is all Janet's. But now he can finally have his beloved back (insert dramatic music here).
Which frankly makes this scene even more awkward than it already was. I mean, what the hell?
