I'm wondering what that crown symbol means, and if it is related to the promise. Have we seen that symbol before? It seems vaguely familiar. The crown is the symbol of the fire element. It is in Coyote's pictures of Annie whenever she still has her hair, the crown is inside her image. But for Coyote's pictures of Annie with her hair cut, the crown symbol is not inside her image.

Fine, fine. Let's see then everything what heraldity has to say: - Emblem of the sovereign state, a monarch's government. -Crowns are also often used as symbols of religious status or veneration. -A crown can be a charge in a coat of arms, or set upon the shield to signify the status of its owner. How very unuoriginal, heraldity you disappoint me. Whoop de doo. A crown is something that is passed on through royal succession. Only one person can wear the crown at a time. Reminds me of how Annie's fire elemental nature is passed down from her ancestors.

Seems a little too quick and easy, doesn't it? Almost like there is more going on than we know about? I think the definition of Gunnerkrieg is "more going on than we know about" Well, yeah, but this time it seems more...blatant?

Well, that de-escalated quickly. Seems a little too quick and easy, doesn't it? Almost like there is more going on than we know about? As Trillium said, this is Coyote's story, all that's going on in the Court that is not about him is unimportant. Probably we will have to piece together the real events later, from conversations between witnesses (Annie) and the curious (Kat).

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that there is at least one thing that happens during the timeframe of this chapter that would be extremely spoilery, were it not withheld from us by the format screw, and it will only be revealed to us much later.

It looks like Coyote can see the "silver cord" connecting Annie and her Fire. ...now. I do get the sense there was some more dialog we're missing here because Coyote thought it was boring and zoned out.\ He kept asking the Headmaster, if he had any snacks. Sadly, Johnny would not share. Insidious politics. "No dessert for you! You didn't even eat that human vegetable!"

Precisely why I suggested this morning that what we've just seen in the past few pages isn't really happening in the comic - more likely it's Coyote composing a "miraculous fix" fanfic with himself as the protagonist, easily (too easily, in the manner of a Mary Sue) overturning the decisions of the "Lords of the Court" and Anthony.

That's a good theory, right up until we see the smoking rubble of the "little building" Coyote knocked over in the next chapter.

I half-expect that Coyote got angry and bored, and simply abducted Annie to the Forest. That would also explain Tony's "repulsion" by cotote tail - he was pushed out of the way.

That's something Ysengrin might do, but not Coyote. Making people agree to his terms is basically how he runs the world. Besides, if he did that, he might acquire an empty shell of a girl, but that's not what he wants. He wants Fire Head Girl. Abduction is not how he's going to get her back.

That crown symbol shows up pretty much any time fire is near her or some spiritual force glances at her nature. How could you miss it? *shrug* We all mentally blank occasionally and it has been simply ages since I re-read. At least I remembered we had seen it before, that's something! It does make me wonder WHY a crown for Annie, and why Coyote cares so much anyway... Not that we didn't have reason to believe already that Coyote has Plans for Annie with a capital P, but it makes one wonder even more.

I think the 'promise' has something to do with the narrator.
Who could that be? Now we shall see. Maybe.

An idea I had was that hair is often referred to as a "crown" and Annie's hair is obviously part of the fire's connection to her (either symbolically in her mind or literally).

To the people saying this was too easy: I think the idea is to keep the drama of coyote's confrontation with Anthony from overshadowing the real story in this chapter: Annie getting her groove back.

I think you are right. Jeanne really hasn't come up of late (not that I can recall), but I think we will find out that she is far more important to the Court than she has been to us. For us she has been more of an interesting side story, but I think there is more to it than that.

Remember, though, Coyote does not know about that whole subplot (f.e. when he comments on her scar in the ether). He doesn't even know who Jeanne is, if I'm remembering the Word of Tom correctly. So that can't be the promise he's speaking about... I almost want to declare "mystery solved". Those are forbidden words here.

In the Court's case they deliberately forgot. They might or might not know that there is an extremely dangerous ghost in the Annan waters. They have not mentioned her except perhaps for Coyote's mentioning that the Court had done something to prevent anyone crossing except by the bridge.

Anthony forbade Annie from going to the forest because it's dangerous...and then he reversed that decision because Coyote threw a temper tantrum and knocked over a building thus proving his point.
Also, I don't know how many people would agree that intentionally leaving out information isn't the same as lying. Sure, Coyote, go right ahead and tell Tony that Annie is safe in the forest. No reason to mention that wasp thing. Or that time that Ysengrin tried to kill her. Or the fact that you instigated Ysengrin's attack. And certainly no reason to mention that time you threatened to cut off Annie's hand.
Totally safe. 100%. Legit.

Have you got anything productive to add or are you just trying to provoke me? "Yes, it helps me assess your character."All joking aside, I re-welcome you to our board. Hopefully, it goes better than last time, heh. I look forward to productive discourse with you.

I think I've just figured out why Coyote gets bored, and why he has to stir things up to entertain himself. ...which is why? Because unless the Court is hiding its power, trying to challenge Coyote is starting to look like trying to challenge Superman. Lex: "At this very moment there are fifty nuclear bombs in major population centers around the world, and I shall detonate unless you bow to me. Even you with your great speed cannot -- " Superman vanishes with a whoosh. Pause for 3 seconds. Lex frantically pushes detonate button on his remote. Superman reappears. "Okay. I tossed em into the Sun. Got anything else for me to take care of before I haul you of to prison for the, um, eighty ninth time?"
