Ah ha! I knew the Donlans would not be complicit in Anthony's shenanigoats, no doubt they are already working hard to undo his influence and push him off a barge into the outskits of the court lake.

Annie's expression in frame two is certainly odd. The fact that the Donlans did not know Anthony returned is highly suspicious to me. Somebody noted on the last strip that Annie cannot face Kat. That behavior continues here.
Kat has taken the step of directly criticizing Antimony's Father, and it looks like that's not going over very well. I hope Kat continues to push, and will not back down, even if she has to trap Annie against the wall. Or hug her and don't let go, per Chancellor.
So what did the Donlans have to say to Kat's news? Especially her Dad?
And where oh where is Reynard?

That low self esteem is very unbecoming on you.

Ah ha! I knew the Donlans would not be complicit in Anthony's shenanigoats, no doubt they are already working hard to undo his influence and push him off a barge into the outskits of the court lake. Hopefully. Still, I say they should be there with Kat now, letting Antimony know they still like her. And presumably she has the same teachers as the year before. Have none of them said anything to her, for example, "You're a good person and a good student, Antimony, I want you to know that," or....oh...how about, "I want to humbly apologize for knowing about and documenting your obvious copying off of Kat all this time but not trying to find out why you were doing it, stop you, or help you?" I think this page solidifies the point that Annie would have taken anything the boys wrote as a confirmation that they see her as stupid. She sees absolutely everyone as feeling this way and absolutely everything as indicating and proving it, because she has been almost completely broken emotionally by her father. Not pushing Kat away, and especially accepting the walkie-talkie, show that this is happily not complete. Pretty dang bad, though.

I mean, the poor self-esteem has always been there. That's the reason she cheated to begin with. This is the first time it's ever been so directly expressed, and it's coming from Annie herself.

Annie's face in the final panel most certainly does not bode well. I predict More mental gymnastics justifying her father and deflecting blame onto herself, with the worrisome possibility of some lashing out.
But as always, I pray Kat is steadfast and does not yield to any outbursts. She ain't giving up on you Annie, not by a fat mile.

Annie should be getting adult visitors very soon now. Jones, for one. Eglamore too.
When her facade finally starts to break, she needs not to be alone.

They call her Annie Small, after she killed some of their classmates, while petting them.
Seriously though, yikes. Just yikes. She seems so broken. How much time has passed, between the two chapters? Hopefully, the next strip will tell us what the Donlans have done so far, and where Renard is. I wonder, what will eventually snap her out of this?

Well, it'll be a damn depressing story from here on out if she never does.
Besides, Tom took the Friends Apartment away from me, and I'm counting on him to return to us the lighthearted sitcom antics we were denied.

I'm sorry, but if we never see that whole stupid setup again, I would consider it be one unambiguously good thing to come out of all this pain and grief.

I think she needs a kick in the ass. The way to sanity is to make her angry again. Make her explode. I am all for uncoditional support but a well placed boot helps more sometimes. She is sinking down in a bog and she is happy to sink. She is a fire elemental and she must use it, if she is to survive this. Look at me ranting. heh...

Hm I see. Here I thought she was being isolated, homeschool style, but it seems even when Anthony is in the vicinity he still finds a way to be absent. That explains why she jumped to the conclusion that her peers were making fun of her, since the kids a year below are.
I wonder who else didn't know Tony was back? This is all adding more evidence to there being an ulterior motive for his return.

Not that I want rage necessarily, but something is going to have to bring forth her suppressed emotions in a very major way. And I have a feeling that it will be something relatively minor that sets it off. Something small that leads to a big epiphany, as it were.

Well, she's putting the card on her shelf...hopefully that means she doesn't entirely believe what she's saying.
And now we're getting to the answers, if Kat criticising Anthony isn't Annie's tipping point. If she even has a tipping point anymore.
Edit: That is to say, whether or not simple criticism is enough, or if more is required, like his presence.

It feels like Annie is trying to come off jokey and self-deprecating, but she's just laying bare her deep insecurities.

Making her angry seems like a brilliant idea with no possible negative repercussions. What could possibly go wrong? Maybe it is the path to recovery. It could also be very destructive.

And the depressingness continues... I'm still waiting for adventure time when we go to see that chair. Please make it a happy chair! It does look like a happy chair. It's in the sunlight, it looks comfortable, it's in warm, comforting colors so far away from all the whiteness we're getting lately. It's pretty much the only nice thing we've got to look forward to right now. I really hope it *is* a happy chair.

I wonder, what will eventually snap her out of this? Can we be sure that she will snap out of it? We really don't know where Tom is going with this. Unless Tom has some secret deal with an anti-depressant company, I think it is unlikely this will last to long. Coyote wants screen time, Jeanne needs liberating, Jackalope-boy needs to be introduced. Two or three chapters at most. So she will be herself again same time next year. Well, she's putting the card on her shelf...hopefully that means she doesn't entirely believe what she's saying. I missed that at first reading, yeah, a spark of hope..

It should be destructive. There are a lot of things to burn away. The only thing is now she mustn't run away to any forest. She must explode and face the results. If there ever was a time I would love being able to jump into fiction at will, this one would be it. We know Annie can face difficulties. We know she has a backbone. and what is happening here is so meh just for this reason

A thought upon this update: what if the title "Sneak" isn't referring to Kat or Annie but to Anthony? Maybe he's up to some shit.

One: oh god, Kat's awesome. She immediately went to her parents (who might actually have some way to help Annie, or know somebody who does), and calls Annie out at the feeble attempt to use gallows humour as a smokescreen, and finally goes on to criticise Anthony directly. Calm and kind, but very direct and honest. Two: I keep hoping for the Donlans. They might not be accomplices of the court - as it has been pointed out, they may not be Annie's teachers (they haven't been seen teaching the class, and they haven't been informed that Annie won't show up in their classes). Maybe they don't want to teach the classes their daughter is in (or can't - the only time we saw a parent teach in one if his kid's classes, it was Anthony and that was a whole different story). And, as I have stated before, I hope Donald's image of his old friend shatters. Violently. And he confronts him, as one of the few people who's opinion matter to Anthony. Three: Annie is further gone than I thought, but good that she's honest with Kat about how she feels. She could just as well say 'oh thank you for the card' and 'the students from year 9 are nice, it's not as bad' while feeling the same. Edit: A thought upon this update: what if the title "Sneak" isn't referring to Kat or Annie but to Anthony? Maybe he's up to some shit. Oh hell, I hope not. Didn't even think of that - and let's hope it isn't meant like that, because the stuff Anthony does in the open is pretty bad. How horrible must things be that he feels he has to hide?

And this is why I still feel Kat won't get through to her here, and that we'll be seeing Zimmy in the near future. Zimmy pushes buttons in a way no other can, and has always been a bit of a kick to the ass for Annie.
