Smooth move, Jones.I can see why she wouldn't need a sword. Just take someone else's and use it against him!

And her face is still peachy.

Yeah, either she heals quick, or she never got cut in the first place.
So is the sword really bending, or is that just a stylized depiction of Jones and Eggers' speed?

depcition of speed i imagine. She has such fantastic presence of mind, skill and speed that...well you saw what she just did.
It also explains why eggs would need to be out in the open and not be in closed range to even have a chance.

Wowiwawa! Jones is the winner! Mmmh, I agree that it's probably a depicton of speed rather than the sword actually bending... She has The Flash super powers And in that skirt! It looks like she makes very small but very calculated fast movements - eg. foot in panel 2. Love Egger's final wry grin from much higher up - great perspective

Don't try this at home, kids. Don't block swords with your shoulder or your face.

The more I see Jones, the more I like her. Poor Eggy didn't have a chance.

I think the "cut" was meant to show that Jones moved so fast, that it wasn't possible to see whether Eggers has actually cut her or not.

Yah, she's without a scrach, so much for my theory that Eggers was worried about her - his worried eyes on the previous page must have been all for himself! And I agree with Nikita, it must be incredibly fine tuned speed rather than her having metal skin... because Tom confirmed that she's not a robot, right?

pretty sure its confirmed she not a robot. It probably was that it was a show of speed rather than that she actually got hit, with the lines showing that she dodged it just before it hit her. That's my guess, anyways.

Maybe I am reading too much into this, but I had these thoughts:
1) Her cut is almost identical to the one Carver got from the ghost lady, except on the other cheek. We know Carver's cut isn't normal, because it came back when she was near Zimmy. It seems possible that Jones does have a "cut" of sorts.
2) I can't help but wonder, why is Eggy tasked with guard duty if Jones is so much better? What could be more dangerous than the various monsters in and around the school? We have seen her with The Man In The Suit when the gods came, so she might have guard duty somewhere else. Maybe she guards The Man In The Suit (who I, at least, assumed was some sort of principle, if Gunnerkrigg has one), but if he needs such constant protection, where does she get the time to accompany Carver?
So many questions... Jones is definitely cool.

I know I'm the one who pointed that out, but when I thought about it, that would mean that Eggers has a sword or some other property close to the Ghost with a Sword. And she isn't on guard duty because she's training the mediums, amongst other things.

LIES! Freaking heck, she's pretty damned impressive. Especially given that Eglamore is no slouch in the superhuman-skills department himself.

Tai Chi? Aikido? JONES. CLAP CLAP CLAP. If you make me guess I'll think Aikido (I practice it); one of the basis of Aikido is Japanesse technique to fight against some with a sword (when you don't have one). Also the feet movement looks like it... let's see what happens next Jones rocks

On the other hand.. would not-htting someone make a ("skang") sound? Yes, that sound mystifies me too... A metal mask, as fr4tbrn suggested in the swoosh thread? But she DOES frown slightly in panel 4... oooh, the Jones Mystery continues!

I've two theories: 1. Jones deflected the blade with a magic shield. (A different kind of magic shield than Donald's, apparently.) 2. Jones is a goddess or some other supernatural being.

I must say I love the distorted perspective used in this sequence. Really gives a sense of speed and fluidity, like. The skang sound, I think, comes from the sword and not her face: it seems to me like there was an actual impact rather than a dodge, but the sword simply bounced off due to Jones's magics. Hence "skang". As for Jones, I think she's some kind of Grand Vizier, and/or bodyguard to, or just otherwise closely connected to the headmaster. She has certain useful skills (like deflecting swords off her face) but she's obviuosly not a medium herself though she trains them.

On the other hand.. would not-htting someone make a ("skang") sound? Yes, actually it might. A sword is not one solid piece of metal. It is assembled of several parts (blade, crossguard, several components for the hilt, pommel) and it actually may "clatter" when swund around.

If it just clattered I'm sure it wouldn't have made the exact same sound as it did when smashing it into Ysengrin's arm.
I'm thinking the same as Mezzaphor actually; she either has some way to harden her skin magically or she's just not human to begin with, which probably has the same effect.

Not so with Jones' face. The way the spark was glinting off her cheek, it looks like she was cut and she's bleeding light from the cut. And if that's really what happened, then there's no way she's human, in which case her face being healed by panel 5 of the latest page is hardly surprising.

As someone who's trying to get his own drawing skills up (I haven't drawn a lot since middle school. Currently 26 :/), I gotta say...
Tom's one of the best webcomic artists I've seen as far as hands/feet go. I dunno if it's just a hangup I have, but I have the hardest time on getting hands and feet to look right. At least for feet you can get away with shoes and whatnot. But you can't have everyone wearing high-tops. It looks silly!
And the perspective stuff has been really cool, too. I actually tried to imagine how this whole thing would look animated. Like if Tom were to do a quick little 10-second thing or something. Man, that would look good.
So yeah. Just a budding artist's rambling. Back to your previous topics.
