NO SPEC YET:
I'm new here, and I've fallen in love with this comic. As exaggerated comic book supergeniuses go, Kat is more believable than just about any others.
SPEC:
... and contrasting her with Annie makes it clear why. I'm sure this spec has been made before, when the picture of Annie and Kat holding hands was posted, but I think the key feature of these two characters is that they are:
1) Realistic
and
2) Subversive of every convention of the genre.
Kat is as qualified to be a medium as Annie is, even if she isn't one of the other two that were picked. Real scientists rely on intuition, hunches, and trust as much as they rely on logic, and there are plenty of mystics who take a rule-driven approach to their beliefs.

Keep in mind that Annie has had a medium for a mother and can already see the guides. Besides, I don't believe Kat was even considered for becoming a medium.
That is, if I'm understanding what you're saying.

If you take into account how she reacted with Ketkrak...maybe not
Zapatero a tus zapatos (Shoemaker, to your shoes)

i dont think she's very interested even if the offer came up. She'd rather shoot a beam through the moon to test its density.
Not to mention the awesome (-o) of shooting a beam through the moon for kicks.

I dunno, she couldn't see the big bug guide, I don't think she'd be a very good medium.

Are we sure that the medium being discussed was, strictly speaking, a spirit medium? Medium is a word with a lot of meanings.

The Court had Surma as their last medium. Annie resembles Surma. Kat doesn't.

Who would want to be a medium? You'd miss double physics!

Real scientists rely on intuition, hunches, and trust as much as they rely on logic, and there are plenty of mystics who take a rule-driven approach to their beliefs. Wait what? Surma was a medium because she had a special power (seeing dead people and psychopomps). Annie is in training as one because she has a special power (seeing dead people and psychopomps). Smiddy is in training because he has a special power (imposing a wiggy ordering effect on chance events). And Parle's in training because they hope she'll inherit her father's power (prognosticator extraordinaire). Kat's just... good at building stuff. In a setting where robots have feelings, Dr Disaster does full-sensory hologram lessons, and Zimmy can cook up something so dangerous that a hazmat team is needed to cart it away, it's kinda hard to tell whether Kat's flair for weird science is a special power in its own right or whether weird science is just an accepted part of reality in the setting.
