I think it has to do something about that the spirit world somehow maintains the material world...but I'm guessing...

I bet the meaning of those words will either become clear in the next few pages, or WAAAAAAAY down the line. And they may just be words of comfort- I mean, what a traumatic experience for a child as young as Annie! He might just be trying to tell her to get strong, death is natural, it'll be okay...

I think people are reading into Dhoo's words too much. I think he was just telling her it is a fact of life. As fr4tbrn said.

I agree. He probably means that the world can only function correctly if everyone dies at their assigned time, and nothing more.

I think he was just telling her a way of the world thing. The cycle of life and death must continue, such events like spirits staying behind are trouble.
