It seems like this particular chapter has been seriously dragging on. Each new installment adds very little to the storyline, and I'm getting the sense that the author is stalling for time.

It's because Tom is secretly dragging this story out until my birthday. He read my mind and saw that I wanted a giant flashy conclusion to this chapter.

The "drawn out too long" complaint is very common for webcomics. Just realise that if Tom wanted more time he could've just gone back to two updates a week. I think if the story was done faster than this it would read very clunkily when re-reading the archive or reading it in book form and the "dragging" effect is purely because we get one page at a time. If it bothers you, I heard a lot of people like to stop checking for updates for a while and read a storyline in one go once it's fully online.

I also think it only seems to drag because it's one page every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
(It might have seemed to drag last week because we didn't know how important the salamander-creature would be to the story; now we know what its significance is.)

IIRC Tom makes the comics some time in advance, so it's not like he's run out of ideas and is frantically delaying. I'll agree with todd's comment about the salamander-thingy as well.

I guess I've felt it was a little bit slow lately, but it's more of an emotionally dramatic story rather than an action-y dramatic one. I expect the end will be good so I'm not freaking out about it.
I think I just get frustrated when there's so many questions and not enough answers. I really hope we get more answers soon. I think that was one of the things that made me stop watching Lost.
Popo - what's he doing for MY birthday, hmm?!

It depends a lot...for example I read "Questionable Content" which is updated daily, but I prefer to check on Friday to get full 5 pages.
I check GC every post day because, specially for this story arch, becuase I love the art-work that Tom is making for this (like little Annie, so cute).

This is the first story arc that I've had to wait on updates for (I only just found the comic) but reading back through it I think it's just as good as all the others. Maybe better than most, depending on how it ends.
And quite frankly it could be the worst, most boring storyline ever and it would still be awesome every time little toothless Annie so much as wanders into a panel ;D

I'm reading Questionable Content too and I think, although it updates daily, it's story doesn't progress faster than GC's. Often, there are pages that are neither interesting nor funny or they're guest strips. The reason why this chapter is kind of lengthy - I think I read somewhere, that Tom plots and draws the comic far in advance so I don't believe those "slow" pages are just there to buy Tom some more time. They might not all add to the story - but they create an important part of the atmosphere. Actually, I even think this page: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=354 was a bit too fast.

rabble rabble rabble, people... get some perspective.
i bet you 5 quid that if you were to read this chapter from end to end after its completion, you wouldn't be able to complain nearly as much about its pacing/flow.
