Have I ever mentioned that gap-toothed kids are one of my favourite things? Too adorable.Annie, stammering? Nay, say I. 'da...father' seems like she's correcting herself. Probably she was also about to say mom instead of mother. Signs of an adult speech pattern, maybe? EDIT: Googled Tolikna and came up with this: from babynamefacts.com Prob'ly means nothing, but it's interesting to know. EDIT2: Is this where the flashback ends? The top panels have corners (possibly to line up with the previous page) but the bottom panels are rounded like the beginning of the flashback.

She also says 'you are' instead of 'you're', though it's probably not a big deal. I think that's the widest smile we've ever seen on Annie. Given that Muut refers to Mrs. Tolikna as a friend, is it possible that she was able to see guides? Or was Muut just calling her a friend to make Annie more comfortable about going with him?

Wow. That's a side of Annie I was never expecting to see.
And I definitely agree that "M... mother" is Annie correcting herself.

I do find it funny that Annie corrects herself when referring to her parents, but has no problem bursting out 'I like your face!'.

"I like your face," is probably the best possible way to introduce yourself to a psychopomp ever!

...and after she saw what Nuut did with Ms. Tolikna, she never smiled as broadly again...

"I like your face," is probably the best possible way to introduce yourself to a psychopomp ever! What would happen is Ketrak was the first one she saw? "What nice eyes you have." or "AIEEEE!" maybe? It's nice to see how Annie was before she had to experience a death in the family.

EXCUSE ME AS I DIE OF ADORABLE. HOLY SHIT. I feel so sorry for her. ): And it makes me sad that she has to correct herself when referring to her parents - I wonder if she's doing it out of her own will or was told to.

Annie's behavior on this page, combined with Tom's comment, suggests that maybe her ever-so-serious demeanor isn't entirely due to growing up in a hospital with no other children her age about (as I had earlier speculated). But since she was behaving in the more familiar manner in the flashback in Chapter Eight (when she was only a couple of years older), apparently it wasn't entirely due to her mother's death, either.
I wonder how long it was before Annie realized why the Guides kept coming to the hospital. (In Chapter Nine, she mentions that it was a long time before she made the connection between the Guides' visits and the departures of the people whom they visited.) Was it when they came for Surma that she finally learned the truth?

Loved little Annie, she looks so adorable in every pannel.
I was wondering about the da...father, but I find the explanation reasonable. Also, British tend to be more formal in their language than Americans, so it might be the reason why she corrected herself.
Why did Anthony knew that Mrs. Tolikna wasn't going to be there the next day??? Maybe he sees the Guides, or his wife told him about it. Anyway, I think that's the key as to why Annie didn't figure out what the guides where, since her father constantly was telling her "him or her are leaving tomorrow..."
And there was someone (or was it Tom) who said that you get a Guide which is close to your personal beliefs, so if Mrs. Tolikna was native American, it makes sense that it was Muut who came to get her.

Anthony is a surgeon on the hospital, I think that's how he knows who's going to die.
This page is one of the most adorable to date. I love the smiling gap-toothed Annie in the first panel.

Young!Annie is too adorable! I wonder what's making her correct herself on things like dad vs father and mom vs mother. Is it just her natural predilection for maturity or is someone else encouraging her to act that way? I don't think that Muut will traumatize the poor girl, though. Hopefully...I guess... >.>

Anthony is a surgeon on the hospital, I think that's how he knows who's going to die. Maybe when he said that, he meant, she was cured and could go home. (Sudden, unexpected complications can always happen)

"I like your face" is going to be my new pickup line.
And I think Anthony meant that she wasn't likely to make it. He didn't know for sure when she'd die, but he guessed.

Hopefully...I guess... >.> I bet growing up in a hospital without many other kids made her want to start growing up fast. She didn't have peers to imitate, only her parents, hospital staff, or patients, all adults (except for maybe some patients). She tries to behave like the people she admires, as everyone does. In young kids, that generally attaches to an older sibling or friend, but for Annie the role model is probably her mother. So, she corrects herself when she uses "kid" speech which her mother wouldn't use.

I think that Annie just wants to impress Muut with big words. She doesn't seem very restrained so I don't think that she or her parents are forcing her to talk like that.

Am I the only one who reads Muut's lines IN ALL CAPS, BECAUSE THAT'S JUST HOW I EXPECT HIM TO TALK?
Okay, maybe I am.

I think it's especially pleasant that Muut, despite being one of the immortal Guides and a figure of myth, is not too proud and aloof to stop to speak to a little girl who greeted him.

Nahhh, Anthony said that she was leaving the next day, no way a surgeon could be that precise to know a patient isn't going to make it...let's see what happens

Re-reading 338 today after seeing 339, I'm struck by the last panel. Muut offers Antimony his hand, to accompany him. He already asked if she'd like to come along, but then he follows it up with such a helpful, nonthreatening gesture.
I guess that's what you'd expect from a guy whose job it is to help ease the transition to the afterlife, but the fact that he extends such grace and warmth even to non-customers(-yet) speaks volumes about his demeanor. I suppose he would have a way with children, sadly.
