Okay.... exactly what did Shadow do? Why is it good to destroy the syphon now, but was not before Shadow flew past Kat?

Okay.... exactly what did Shadow do? Why is it good to destroy the syphon now, but was not before Shadow flew past Kat? Told them that it was about to happen so they could prepare, perhaps? I have another theory, but it's based in the brief glimpse of the future that we had and thus I shall not share yet.

I believe it has to do with the future page we saw by accident. Whatever Shadow told Paz seems to be the significant thing they needed to wait for.

It seems obvious to me that Shadow was sent to tell Kat when to start her victory speech. After all, you simply can't go about thwarting evil plans without some variety of dramatic monologue or witticism. His signal tells Annie that the ship has had ample time to accept his failure at the hands of mere children before the final ether syphon is destroyed.

Shadow spoke to Paz, not Kat. So either the other kids don't trust Kat enough now that she is working to make this new body (against her will? still unsure on that...), or there is something specific to Paz. Given we specifically saw that the Serephs don't view her as a threat in a previous page, I assume it has something to do with her ability to talk to animals. Contacting Lindsey perhaps? Although not sure why she didn't do that before? Or maybe just asking the creatures of the sea to help them out.

Poor Kat, everyone is leaving her in the dark! Seriously though, I assume Shadow could have snuck out without Kat seeing him, so I guess letting Kat see him was as much as he could do without tipping off the ShipWhale.

I know Shadow's body was already pointed out when he first changed, but damn, now in detail...
Also Annie's got that look on her face like someone just farted while she was in her whole ether mode and she's too distanced to complain just yet but you know she can tell.
Now the question I have is where everyone's going to be dropped when things are set back to "normal". Like, if it'll all be relative to where they are now, or back in that big ballroom, or hey, compared to their original position everyone might just appear in the middle of the ocean 'cause Zimmingham is pretty big and everyone's done quite a bit of travelling.

Oh, this is all so terribly excitingly! I just can't bear it! Honestly, though, I do not know how this is going to sit with the Seraphs, with the kids all messing up their plans and stuff. I feel like it's gonna get more sinister. Almost horror, even!

So either the other kids don't trust Kat enough now that she is working to make this new body (against her will? still unsure on that...), Especially as they didn't even see her once the fun began and he's going to heed anyone else while Annie and Kat are the only ones he knew for significant time? or there is something specific to Paz. Or he thought one of them is enough and Kat was occupied. Or he thought this thing noticed him and ran off. Or...

I know an albatross is supposed to be good luck, but I'm really not sure what to make of Shadow's ... species? ... given this context. Fortunately we've seen neither mariner nor cross-bow in this chapter, so I'm not especially worried for Shadow right now.

This plan seems to hinge on Shadow contacting Paz.
How did they know Paz is still with Kat?

My guess: it was not dependent on Paz at all (other than, possibly, locating her to make sure she's in a reasonably-safe place). It was dependent on communicating with Kat. But it was left to Shadow to determine the best method of doing that once he located Kat; and under the circumstances he determined that unnecessarily and prematurely distracting Kat from what she was doing was unwise, but communicating with Paz would suffice.
Which (combined with Paz not freaking out when Shadow spoke to her and took a solid-ish form) tells me that Paz and Shadow have been introduced to each other before - so, most likely, Paz has also met Robot.

You're right, I missed Shadow flying away in the 6th panel until you pointed it out. Not sure what he can do to help besides distracting the ShipWhale. Bring Kat and Paz two life jackets... that he gets somewhere along the way?

Which raises the question of how buoyant a shadow is... Well, a shadow - even of a fairly small object - can be huge. And it's quite thin. So if it's capable of lifting off of an object and taking a three-dimensional form, it can occupy a huge volume with essentially no mass. And if it's watertight, it'll be pretty bouyant.

Or, reshape himself to be one big life-jacket. Shape-changing can be handy. Which raises the question of how buoyant a shadow is... Well, of course he does not fully obey physics, but if he can stretch himself a few micrometers thick over the water, he should be able to cover a very large area (if his total volume is equal to bird-form Shadow). Furthermore, being very light but with a large area, there is a large pressure exerted by the water, so people could probably sit on top of him, or he could capture a large volume of air underneath/in himself. EDIT: totally ninja'd by warrl and others.
