So he wants to become a whale now? Damn you, ship. You went from creepy/terrifying to creepy/pitiful by just adding "please" to your demand. The poor thing. It gives the impression he isn't to sure about his plan any more. What can she do, she has no lab, and nothing in this place can be trusted to stay the same if you touch it.

I hope she's been taking lessons in Sleuth Diplomacy. A diplomatic solution would certainly be best for the sake of avoiding similar crises in the future.

Now you're asking politely, Ship? Really? Also, does this mean that you know about Robo-Kat? From where? ]Admittedly, if the only purpose of this all was to turn themselves into flesh, it has indeed been half-achieved. They never said anything about not being terrifying and eldritch horrory. Well, seeing that the whole point was to make the Ship attractive to Lindsey... Also, I suspect that Paz is having unpleasant flashbacks about ghost clowns right now.

Pardon me if I sound weird, but am I the only one who doesn't find the ship's ethereal form terrifying/impressive enough? Honestly, I was expecting a lot more.
Or maybe I'm getting used to seeing Eldritch Abominations in various media?

Is that thing the ship (or at least, the part of the ship in which its artificial intelligence rested) - which was my first thought - or is it the robot limb that the Seraphs brought in? (Or - worse - both somehow merged?)
When I read this page, I thought of a children's book I once read of a painter who painted a fish too well and too life-like - and it demanded that the painter give it a soul so that it could become fully alive (and the story made it clear what a tall order that was).

You thought it made him pitiful or unsure? Maybe it's because I'm reading it in a booming Christopher Lee-like voice, but it sounds overly polite and demanding in a "Would you please make me flesh. Or I might have to do something I will regret" sort of way.

Who wants to bet we will see a reference to Zimmy's Iron Angel Kat again before this chapter is over?
It just occurred to me after seeing what the ship had become.

It's just interesting to note that the boats speech bubble seems to be accommodating to its transformstion--no longer straight and crisp lines, but unstable, trembling, with the corners getting smoothed out

The city on the ships tail is really cool. Bets that most students are in the city, to match being on the boat? Paz and Kat are on the boat. Also, flesh? Ship computer, you're already a near-lovecraftian bone whale thing with arteries sprouting out and wierd appendages. We may also be seeing signs of non-Euclidean space happening. Those can be wires. - Cut the red wire. - But they all are red! - My point exactly - cut them all. Also, I suspect that Paz is having unpleasant flashbacks about ghost clowns right now. IMHO more of "what the que?"

Kat has only heard stories--now she's inside of them.
This physical immersion in ether-related shenanigans makes it impossible for Kat to relegate it to the back of her mind, now. It seems there'll be a strong shift in tone after this, and a change in Kat will occur (at least objective-wise). I think we may see ourselves revisiting Diego's older designs sometime soon because of this. A lot of crap will result from this, even when this ship-lovefest is resolved. Of course, it's only an assumption.

Holy... That substance in the canal www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1406, that's not water; is it / isn't it / isn't it not. About the roboflesh: I have always had a "head canon" that it wouldn't be strictly alive; not composed of separate cells with their own metabolism, instead just being some sort of organic (but highly perishing resistant) motor that reacts to electricity.

OK, folks. Let's keep steady and see what we've got here: 1-Kat is still good ol' flesh and bone Kat, which is good news... or maybe not. Because this could be a job for Iron Angel Kat. Demonsul, I'm prepared to bet that we'll get to see her before this is over. Because: 2-"Level 6 etheric distortion" probably means that this isn't like previous trips to Zimmingham, where everything was just a hallucination and your body stayed behind in the Court. Right now, it looks like there's no longer a "base reality" to return to, and there won't be unless things are sorted out the right way... whatever that is. But I get the feeling that just bringing Gamma to Zimmy won't be enough. 3-Paz and Kat seem to be standing on the stage at the dancing hall, inside the ship -stairs to the right, as someone pointed out- but at the same time there's a monster ship in front of them. Paradox. Not a big deal, if this were a hallucination; but if it isn't, it probably means that this reality is seriously unstable. Which could be good news or bad. 4-Also been pointed out: monstership has water flowing into it and buildings growing out of it, so that's probably where everyone is (except for Kat and Paz) Paradox confirmed. At least, this means that it won't be impossible to get Zimmy and Gamma back together. Still, mostly bad news. Crap Now, let's try for the silver linings: 1-Zimmy and Gamma are on the same side of the paradox... apparently. Let's hope the next strip doesn't give us a confused Gamma staggering into Paz. 2-The cavalry is on the way: even if Jack's drone fails, Lindsey was keeping an eye on things and there's no sign that she was sucked into the distortion. At the very least she should be able to call for help. But I'm also counting on the drone; so the odds are that Bud, Renard, Eglamore and the Donlans will soon the on the case. In fact, the whole Court should mobilize if a whole year trip's worth of students is under dire threat. I think we can count on them being able to do something. ...and that's about it. Not a lot, but it makes me feel better. Now to wait

I also wonder what this ...sight (...their true form?) tells about the souls of robots (and the mind of their creator), if anything. I wonder if I've been thinking of the robots cause incorrectly. I've been thinking of it as Transrobotism. But what if, it's less them trying to become transcended, and more about stopping them being like this? What if their souls are more undead than robotic? If it wasn't for Diego's original robot's Transrobotic statements, I'd wonder what Diego did. Did he make an "electronic" golem, or did he make a soul jar?

So, I guess the tentacles pointed out in gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1406 are part of the ship. I'm guessing that because most of the ship was underwater, most of it ended up under land, with buildings in its back, and when it became unstuck, those buildings stuck with it... somehow. This would also explain the what appears to be raw stone in the background and on the ground - Kat and Annie ended up in the hole where the ship was. None of this is particularly relevant, however. I'm very interested in seeing how William, Janet, John, Margo, and the others who we haven't met react.

Those eyes ... they're uncomfortably close to Boxbot eyes. Not the same segmentation, thank goodness, but still. Just the idea is terrible.
Speaking of which, I do hope he didn't manage to stow away onboard. My mind went there and tried to picture him with flesh. Don't, especially if you've just eaten breakfast.

Heh heh heh. I get it. Pardon me if I sound weird, but am I the only one who doesn't find the ship's ethereal form terrifying/impressive enough? Honestly, I was expecting a lot more. Or maybe I'm getting used to seeing Eldritch Abominations in various media? I agree, partially. Unlike the terrifying ether-form of the Librarian or Coyote (when bone-like), to me this one still looks menacing but also sad and twisted. Also, the color scheme isn't as cohesive as usual. Notice that the textboxes changed shape...and that nobody usually calls Kat 'creator' (with one exception). Some interesting details here.

I have an awful feeling that Shipthulu is going to be screaming in pain soon.
The mutation of the flesh robo-limb reminds me of phazon from Metroid Prime.
And I really like how the ocean water is flowing out of Shipthulu like some sort of liquidy tendrils.

Kat likes robots, and Paz likes animals. This is going well. I wonder how it intends to leave Zimmingham if Kat does what it asks.

Paz has that look of someone running headon into the consequences of becoming key supporting cast to the protagonist in this comic, and seriously rethinking the wisdom of this relationship.
"Katerina, if we're going to be a couple, I need you to promise me... no more hostage takings by biomechanical cthulhoid whale-horrors who venerate you as a creator."
"Isn't that asking for too much from me, Paz? I have needs too!"

In fact, the whole Court should mobilize if a whole year trip's worth of students is under dire threat. I think we can count on them being able to do something. One potential problem if the Court comes to the rescue; here's a hypothetical scenario: Kat manages to reason with the ship (I assume that what just spoke to her is what's left of its consciousness, though physically blended - from its design - not only with Zimmy's world but also that robotic limb in the canister), and gets it to understand that its meddling was wrong. It's about to help her reverse the process (somehow) when the rescue party arrives. The ship panics; if the Court learn about this, their judgment on the ship will likely be harsh - say, its body broken up and its CPU put in storage (the storage area we saw in Chapter Twelve that Annie rescued Robot's CPU from). Kat offers to speak up for the ship, explain that it's sorry about what it did, but the ship fears that that won't be enough - the adults might even dismiss Kat's pleas as a case of Stockholm Syndrome. Instead, it tries to flee - and ready even to fight off the rescue party with whatever it has available, making the situation worse. I do hope that its use of "please" is a sign that it's becoming more reasonable - maybe the shock of discovering that this is what Zimmy's reality-warping turned it into has helped it realize that this wasn't such a good plan after all. If Kat can explain to it that her abilities have been greatly exaggerated by the robot religion (and do so without getting Robot sentenced as a false prophet), things might turn out all right.
