*insert little accent thing above, or something*
I know, that's probably the most random conclusion you've seen drawn. I have no idea what it is, besides the look, obviously. However, this thought's been stricken since Chapter 11. Something about her character makes me think she's either a homage to that form of vengeful Japanese ghost or at the very least of a similar style. Her attitude, for one, plus the way her present mood affects direct reality, and ESPECIALLY the random instances throughout the comic that remind me of things associated with this sort of spirit. Specifically when she speaks 'static' and that quirky scene at the optometrist's.
Okay, I've gone from losing you to losing myself, but come on, it's a fun thought. If solely based on the image alone, the soot-filled eyes and disheveled raven hair bring a familiarity between the two to me. She just strikes me as that particular version of a vengeful ghost, leastwise not one bound by any particular conventions, but hey, isn't the supposed point of Gunnerkrigg to provide refuge for various spinoffs of the world's mythologies and folklore? >_>
Either that or she's, y'know, a demon, but how boring is that? ... yeah, not very. Still.

One of the more flattering pictures of a famous movie Onryo there. It's a sort of Japanese ghost, someone who's spirit has been swept up in a need for indiscriminate vengeance due to some abuse or misgiving in life.

Have you seen The Grudge? The Ring? They were American adaptations of the Japanese versions. From the description, an Onryo is that type of ghost. (whoo, forum stalker's first post^^)

I haven't seen the Grudge or the Ring, actually. I don't really like that type of movie. Thanks for explaining.

haha, it's funny that this topic should come up right before a chapter about ghosts.

I'm sorry, but after seeing that child today, I feel some completely unrelated desire to post in this thread. Please ignore any possible connections and go about your merry day. >_>

She's a child with some very unpleasant gifts [even more than usual]. But unlike the others who eventually suffer a terrible faith she was one of the lucky exceptions who met someone perfect for her, in all aspects of the word.
