I don't understand. Aly was a boy who turned into a bird, he wasn't really a bird, he simply became one. Uh... Doesn't "became X" mean "was not X, but now is X"... by definition? I felt like the point needed some reiteration.

And sometimes a downy bird, sometimes birds of a feather, sometimes bird brains... This doesn't tell us much on its own.
