I would probably just run to the nearest bomb shelter rather than the one that I'm assigned to. How many minutes of warning did the air raid sirens usually give? The Chain Home radar system could pick up large groups of aircraft while they were still over France. Depending on the size and altitude of the raid force, London might have thirty to forty minutes warning, in a best case scenario. Maybe twenty to thirty minutes typically, and less or none in worst cases.

This is probably gonna be a chapter where a parade of deadly things fail to happen to Mort 1. Marriage 2. Bombs 3. ... And Tom's number, a.k.a. the crown, a.k.a. 113, makes yet another cameo. At this point, it is just like The Numbers, already, this mythical piece of meme completely interwoven with all events of the mythos that is never quite fully explained. I actually thought of The Numbers too, although more along the lines of "this mythical piece of meme that once explained turns out to be completely arbitrary in its specifics".

Yeah, seems pretty early for him to be dying already. We're only two pages in. Unless most of the chapter is about HIM adjusting to being dead... I rather like that idea. Also, he could end up being trapped in 113, and has to deal with the air running out, along with his fellow occupants. Either way, there would be a lot of soul searching. I'm hoping he's reliving this, and Annie will make an appearance, to go through it with him.

It may end now ... ... but I'll go on record wild-spec-ing that this is the scare that had Mort's parents sending him to Gunnerkrigg Court. Hey, ghosts usually have some connection to their haunts. "I got in one little air raid and my mama said 'Mort, you're living with your auntie and uncle in the Court!'"

Probably not, I'd assume this was fairly early in the war (kids still waiting to be sent away, not much damage seen in the streets) and the V1 rockets were first used in 1944. The Roooooo is just the very distinctive WW2 air raid siren. Very true. It probably would be more of BBBBBRRRRBBBBBBBRRRRRRBBBBBBBBRRRRRRBBBBBBBBBRRRRRRR noise 'cause of the pulsejet motor. Well, at least it'd be quick... I didn't realise this comic was getting so dark. Damn. You can't write about death and the afterlife for too long without touching on war. I think it will be a brief interlude, though. Tom rarely dwells on sex or violence for long. And they can only get Cadbury creme eggs during Easter! Gunnerkrigg Court in America is the worst! And even then it's awful quality chocolate- at least if you're buying from Hershey's or something.

He has said in multiple Q&A's that he prefers to lean as little on sex and violence for plot impact as possible, which I think is very principled stand to take, particularly in this day and age where a great many plots derive their stopping power from those two things. He has mentioned a passing interest in trying out writing when he finishes GKC. That makes me very excited.

Should probably be Speculator Policy to assume that any numerically significant mystery can be linked in some way to 113. The mystery is solved!

(This is the Law of Fives from the Illuminatus trilogy.) (And, of course, 1+1+3 = 5.)

I meant if he were at ground zero when it went off. I'm sure with any sufficiently large bomb (not just nukes, which this isn't one; a V1 is just a REALLY big conventional bomb) you wouldn't feel a thing if it went off at ground zero, hopefully.

They assigned people to trenches? I would not have expected. Nah, bomb shelters. I'm referring to the sheet of paper - the option "trenc..." is crossed off. Not essential to the story, but an interesting piece of history. The paper's signed by a warden.

You don't even need to be in range of shrapnel as long as the blast pressure is high enough. Hydrostatic shock. Flips you off like a light switch. As for the anticipation, the buzz bombs cruised at a not insignificant portion of the speed of sound, so by the time your brain registered that a V1 was coming it would leave almost no time for fear.

I think it's time to set the mood a little bit (and help get the horribly depressing thought of a little boy being [possibly] annihilated in a bomb explosion from our heads) with some catchy WW2 hits. Good way to get worries from your head.
Who knew my knowledge and appreciation of 1940s hits would eventually come in handy.

a V1 is just a REALLY big conventional bomb The V-1 carried a payload of 850 kilograms. A contemporary version of the de Havilland Mosquito (a multi-purpose manned aircraft - some Mosquitos were fighters, some were bombers, some sacrificed all armament for speed and were used for reconnaisance) could carry a single 1800-kilogram bomb more than twice the V-1's range at greater speed (and then fly home again).
