Hey everyone! I just bought books 1-3 on a whim last month. I finally got around to reading them and I absolutely love the Gunnerkrigg Court series. After finishing book 3 this evening, I decided I want to help the author and buy a few prints and the summer books 1 and 2! I'm not one to fall into buying merchandise but there is something I can't put into words to properly describe this series....I think Coyote could do it best but in the mean time I want to buy some GunnerKrigg Court items! I'll even post a photo when they arrive! Call it an early birthday present for myself
My only complaint is (being careful of all the books I own I take care of them) when I got to book 3, page 183 there was a DOG EARED page! I was in shock because this series is awesome I must keep all books in mint condition!!! At first I thought the store that sold it to me tried to pass it off as a damaged book without me knowing (It was bought brand new). It turns out that there is an extended white border of about an inch that goes around the page that was perfectly folded down. But in order for it to be folded down perfectly, the page also had to be dog eared! Anyone else have this problem on their copy? Maybe it was a publishing error? It just sucks because in order to see the comic panel you have to unfold this large border overlap and then fold it back in so the pages close normally. If you look at the book closed, you cannot tell there is a damaged page so I think the store did not know it was like that. But since its been a month since I bought the book I doubt I could return it and get one without the publishing error. Argh, its the smallest thing but it is driving me nuts. A scratch on my car? I don't care. Dead batteries in the TV remote? I don't watch tv so I don't care. But a damaged page in a book series I looovveee? Agony!
Here are the photos I just took:
Note: I actually have about 7 photos, but I learned I can only post 3 in this post. BTW, I was wrong, it is not page 183, but pages 181/182. Page 181 looks cleanish even with the dog eared page, but page 182 is much more heavily creased/bunched over. I took a photo of the book closed showing that when you look at the pages pressed together, you can't even tell anything wrong is with the page layout until you get to pages 181/182. It looks like the way the page was supposed to be cut there was an error and the ear of the page became folded over/bunched up as a result. If there is a way I can post more photos in this link I will for additional proof. I can easily see how someone could overlook this publishing error. But if there is a way to get a replacement book I would like that. It sounds so trivial but when I am engrossed in a story and I get to a page where someone tore it/wrote in it/etc I''m like "hey what happened here?" and for that moment I'm taken out of the story and back into reality and then I'm thinking this sucks! My book was damaged! And then to get back into the story feels kinda like trying to push a cadillac with a dead battery.
This isn't just a generic paperback novel to me, it is a epic graphic novel I want to keep! It was the artwork that sold me at first on this series! I wasn't sure I wanted to dive in until I saw the cover to volume three. Something about that cover artwork made me want to learn the story as to why this young girl was being protected/watched out for by this fox/wolf looking spirit with a body made of trees. Graphic novels appeal to me because they give the story teller an opportunity to express the emotions of their characters through their eyes and body language. True, drawing out your story could make it less serious or goofy looking and hurt the seriousness of the story. But in Gunnerkrigg Court I feel the story teller nailed the look of what he was going for in visually allowing his characters to come to life for the audience. He did such a good job that I even plan on getting a print or two to decorate my computer room! Hence the importance of the page quality for me.
I'm not sure what else to say here but I have more photos if it is necessary. If there is anyone I need to personally write to, just let me know and I will get in contact with them. Lastly, I think it would be great if there was a way we could pick a scene/comic panel that we could have imprinted upon a t-shirt or even a glossy photo. I've came across a few (okay more than a few) panels that I thought would be great to decorate the room with. And prints/t-shirts are less expensive than collecting action figures. If the author ever comes to Ohio, I would show up to get some of my books autographed! And get my friends to buy some too! I plan on buying an extra volume 1 to send to my mom in Canada to read, I just know she would love this series!
