NO MORT DON'T LEAVE US. NOOOOOOOOOOOO. STAY. PLEASE. STAY. *sniff* he was my first avatar. I loved that avatar. How could he abandon us like this? Well, well, look who's talking. Did you not abandon Mort first? Can't see you using that avatar anymore. You take someone for granted, and now he's gone. Cry me a river. I didn't realize the change would affect the linked account, and then I lost the picture. I will dredge it up again in honor of Mort.

*KMar proudly continues upholding the long tradition of GKC forums', that is, derailing comic threads into the abyss of meta and the wastelands of offtopic.* Because there's so many exciting adventures to be had in the Abyss and the Wastelands! Quests to be taken! Monsters to be faced and slain (or befriended)! Damsels in distress to be saved (or fine gentlemen)!

Oh No! Sad to see Mort make this decision. But perhaps this is just an inevitable stage that all spirits come to. After all, he is ready to move on and perhaps go to "somewhere better" than sitting in a school hallway forever. He isn't here just for the entertainment of others, he has his own goals to attain that we know nothing of. And it will certainly be interesting to get at least a hint of his backstory before he is gone.
I rather wonder if Chapter 47 (RotD part 2?) will be the opposite of part 1. As in, will we see the entire chapter from Annie/Mort's point of view rather than Kat's? That would be an interesting switcheroo.

I wonder what Parley will have to say on this.

Just thinking about the page today...who has actually died in the course of the comic? Off the top of my head, Robert Paulson. I mean that chicken wing. I guess the green guy got killed, and other people in backstory, but I think you mean in the present context of the story. The old robot that Kat brought back to life could be considered to have died. Oh Red and Blue died. But off screen then they Jesus'd there way back. Edit: Renard totally roasted that Hetty chick. If we count robots, there was a tic-toc and the one Jack smashed. More biologically, there were at least one glass-eyed man and two insects, as we count appearances of guides. Equally biologically, Sivo's body died in chapter 3, though I guess it's a semantic question whether Sivo died in the course of the comic or in the backstory. And I suspect the wisp bought it.

Hahaha, I don't think we should count the two insects. If we do, we would have to count the fish Yssy caught. (though admittedly as you point out, the insects died to intro Ketrak).

Sheesh, without a guide drawing attention to it, how did you even recall that death? ... makes me wonder if etherical beings like Ys can see guides as well. Must be wearying, when you catch your own dinner, always having a guide showing up to claim it ...

Yea I don't think the insects count, or the fish. And as far as robots go, I'm including the chicken wing because of the significance it held to the robots in being "alive" or whatever. I suppose the robots in this world are sufficiently sentient and their own persons and characters that having one die is like normal human. And yes the glass-eyed man counts, I think Sivo counts as in story since everybody considered him to be still alive until he died, and I wasn't going to include the wisp because I thought he was basically a giant insect, but I suppose he should count too. I can't think of anyone else at the moment who may have died during the story.

...Why would Mort suddenly want to go to the ether? And why was he left there anyway in the first place? : /

Just thinking about the page today...who has actually died in the course of the comic? The answer depends on your definitions of "who", "died", and "in the course of the comic". I'm not going to bother with all the characters who have been shown or mentioned at least once and are presumably not currently of this world, but whose actual endings were not shown or mentioned beyond possibly the fact of them being dead. For example people who died in Good Hope, so that Antimony met their psychopomps, but were never shown or named, don't qualify. There still are quite a few nominees. A (probably incomplete) list, in approximate chronological order: unnamed tiny robotsMr. Jeanne's GreenJeanneDiegoMrs. Toliknaunnamed shadow-people and wooden-dog-monstersDanielMartinSurma (too many plausible links to choose from) Sivo (death of body; it's unclear when the person died) an unnamed shadow-persona tic-toca flysome faceless people in Zimminghamfake-Katan anta Zimmingham spiderHettythe Bismuth Fraud waspPlus, at varying unclear times, some guy in the desert, Sir Young, Steadman, and four unnamed beings Jeanne killed. Edit: collecting all those links took a while and, unsurprisingly, several people ninja'd me - and included beings I missed. I'll come back later and add them to my list.

I wonder what Parley will have to say on this. They could maybe try the sword on Mort. Might be good to know if it has no effect on ghosts/condemns them to a fate worse than death.

I wonder if this was Mort's entire purpose for sticking around. (Yeah yeah, I'm late. I got the dates mixed up and thought today was Wednesday.)

Or to instruct Annie in her proper duties. Or let her practice, or whatever.
I would definitely count Oldbot's death. He seemed to count it, in any case. As did Robot.

My guess is that Mort didn't have any beliefs (or didn't remember any from his life) and was waiting for the arrival or the revelation of one guide for him. Then Annie came, taught him how to scare efficiently, became her friend and... He started to believe in her ? And now, he can have a guide to the ether !

Also he could have rejected the guide that came for him.
