Masquerade masks are so symbolic. Its great how Tom uses it here to convey Annie's feelings.
incidentally, making large numbers of papers stars usually means a large number of paper cuts. not surprised if annie got nicked a few times along the way.

A lot of strong emotion conveyed in just that one panel with the mask, very well done. And Kat is looking very mature in that last panel. The new longer hairstyle really works for her, makes her seem...older than in the past, more mature, yet still the same ol' Kat underneath.

It really does make you wonder why Anthony never even bothered to send a message to Annie all this time. If he ever does show up, he's going to have to keep out of Kat's way - you just know that she's going to have a lot of things to say to him for abandoning his daughter like that.
At least Kat's still there for Annie - and if she has her way, this is going to be the last summer holiday that Annie spends at Gunnerkrigg (unless Kat doesn't go on holiday next time).

Poor Annie. I'm so glad she has a great friend like Kat to help her feel better. And there's so much symbolism with the mask already! I've never made paper stars like that, but it looks like they're really complicated, at least to someone as anti-crafts as me.

Uh, they're really basic, actually, did you check out the video Tom linked to? I've done stuff like that before for my friends. Eesh, probably not that many of them, though.

So why is Rey opening an eye in panel 5? It's probably in response to something the girls said in that panel or panel 4.
I wonder if Reynardine knows anything about Anthony.

Annie hiding her face behind the mask on this page suggests that maybe she hasn't changed so much during the summer holidays after all - especially when you compare her conduct here to Kat's much more outspoken response.

Paper stars!!
Oh man, it's such a silly small thing, but I feel like I can identify a little more with Annie now. We have a hobby in common!
They're really incredibly easy, too, even for the crafts-impaired.

I briefly wondered whether the significance of the scissors on the title page might have been that Annie used them to help make the stars, but then remembered that they were origami stars. So evidently the scissors have some other purpose in the story.

You still need scissors unless you fold your stars out of a whole A4 sheet.

You can still get precut paper for stars, though. My sister has boxloads in her room.

If Kat is able to fulfill her resolve to never leave Annie at Gunnerkrigg by herself again, the future "filler periods" to represent summer holidays will obviously be different from the one that we had last month. (Of course, since the new school year's just starting, we won't see the next one for a long time.) If Annie and Kat spend the holidays together after that, there obviously won't be further letters or photographs available for those periods. But there'll probably still be guest comics.

I suppose that the point here is: "If you have to explain a joke, it doesn't work."
