but now a new metric has been added. The number of angels I have seen is "one" So underspoken, while still being haunting and beautiful. Sounds like Gunnerkrigg. Well, I want to say that Divine is completely awesome, not only because of the severe emotional... visualisation and punch it holds... Oh man oh man oh man!!! Are we actually one and the same writer and just have not realized it yet? Divine is my favourite too, the artwork is beyond web comics, it just is, but the biggest thing for me was the multi-layered storyline that was so well put into images. In fact, I only got interested in GKC through Divine. I archive binged the comic because I just couldn't understand what happened in Divine. And after that, I was still left with all the crucial questions, like "what was Tony doing there?", "what was real in this?", "what exactly did Zimmy do?", "what happened in the end of the chapter when Zimmy suffered Jack-attack?" and "why did Kat look like that to Zimmy?" Some... months(?), at least weeks, later I joined the forum to discuss a very different subject and learned the term "archive bing". I'm really starting to wonder. ^ ^ It's a really abstract and metaphorical chapter, and because of that, it's so crucial to such a story as Gunnerkrigg, which relies so much on mystery and semi-concealment. It's also why I love Zimmy so much - she really blurs that line, allowing us to see both the grounded and fluid more clearly. *binge. As in, I went on a {drinking, comic-reading, chocolate-eating} binge.

Personally, I think Residential has been my favorite chapters (laser cows!), though there are many many good ones. Though part of why I like Residential so much is that I really enjoy that section of chapters from chapters 23-26 or Terror Castle of the Jupiter Moon Martians to The Old Dog's Tricks. The Coward's Heart is a special mention for emotional story and Red Gets a Name is a special mention for fun and all artwork.

It appears I didn't really learn it after all Unless, if we go with the theory above, whoever it is that writes in our names perhaps learned it as you but subsequently forgot it as me. P.S. Not as if this was really post scriptum, but as you might have expected, I fully agree with your words on Zimmy.

Is 'all of the above' an answer? Ah well.
Favorite? For me, it is Sky Watcher and the Angel. Closely followed, in this order, by The Fangs of Summer (oh, Coyote!), Crash Course (Beautiful!), The Coward Heart (d'awwww, plus teleportation!), S1 (first hints of Jeanne's story), Parley and Smitty Are in This One (whole new dimension), and Divine (much speculation still to be had). Plus, of course, the plot twist at the end of Changes.
Least favorite? By far, The Great Secret - dat kick the dog moment. I also found the first couple chapters less interesting than the rest - I generally tell people that want to read it that they have to read through Chapter 14 before they decide if they like it.
Best done? Probably Fire Spike, even though it is heart-wrenching.

At this point, it hurts to say it, but I would not had started to read this at all, had I started from the beginning. I was lured in by Divine, and read from the beginning just to know what on earth happened in that chapter, but when I started, not only was the artwork significantly worse, but the comic seemed to be targeted to young girls. No offence to young girls, I simply am not in that target group. Will to understand Divine and knowledge that the artwork will get better and the story more complex drove me through the first chapters, and then it soon became much better and I got hooked. It was quite early, though, probably when Rey was introduced. And it all escalated when Coyote and Ysengrin joined the show.

Please forgive me for necroing this thread...
but my favorites are "A Handful of Dirt" and "Microsat 5," the former for its depiction of Annie and Kat's relationship, its illustration of how Annie deals with emotions, and the color scheme, and the latter for a further depiction of Annie dealing with strong emotions in a non-typical way and Mr. Donland's grasp of how to handle them (I don't see this much in mainstream media. People tend to sob only at opportune moments and then find consolation in warm words).
I tend to like the earlier art more than the current art (I love the stylistic nature of the earlier art, though not the earliest/wonky head art), though both are beautiful.

I'll join you in necroing. Like most people, my true answer is "almost all of them," but here are some that stand out to me: - The Stone - JONES. And the artwork. And the various time periods. And the bonus page!
- See Ya! - The emotions, oh man. Also, little-boy Mort is super cute. (Also, Jones.)
- A Ghost Story - The Moddey Dhoo is awesome. (And finding out more about the psychopomps in general.) Surma & Annie together. The depiction of fire as a creature. Also, little-girl Annie is super cute.
- Power Station - ZIMMY. Annie and the readers (and Jack, heh heh) get a firsthand perspective of what she goes through on a daily basis.
- Red Returns - The ex-fairies' blue-and-orange morality (pun intended), and Kat and Annie's futile attempts to argue against it, are hilarious. I love characters with really different cultural assumptions.
- Spring Heeled Part 2 - More Zimmy! (And Jones!) Really, I love it whenever Zimmy shows up--Divine, The Torn Sea, and Dobranoc, Gamma all made my shortlist.
- Microsat 5 - Love the characterization of Annie. (And Donald, too.)
Honorable mention goes to Traveller, which isn't a chapter but is drop-dead gorgeous.

Ties - If only because I'm thirsty for ANY glimpse into the school years of the older generation, and that's the closest look we've got so far.
The Breakout - Enough said.
The Tree - Blew my frickin' mind and emotionally twisted me like a pretzel.
Fire Spike - See above.
The Realm of the Dead - Funny, creepy and interesting. One of my faves to reread - I keep noticing little details I didn't before.
The Stone - Just fascinating.
Dobranoc, Gamma - Can't tell you why I love this one, I just do. I still have no idea exactly what was going on, and I'm not sure I ever wanna find out.
Thread - That romantic fluff yesssss give it to me.

Sky Watcher and the Angel has to be one of my favorites. It really pushes away a lot of innocence in learning about the dark history of the Court. The chapter also cements the idea that Annie and Kat are growing up. The nice, safe, innocent childhood world they grew up in until that point is not how the real world works. The plot of the comic also switches to a darker, less clear-cut progression after this, with no real "good guy" camp and several opposing factions with their own skeletons in the closet.
The Great Secret is another one that really provides a rude awakening, this time pertaining to Annie exclusively in regards to the forest instead of the Court.

My favorites, among the less comedic chapters, are all the chapters with or relevant to Anthony, honestly. Not because I like Anthony as a person, but because they are so dramatic and intense (although honestly everything from Ch 30 on is amazing, as are many chapters prior). Microsat 5, Divine, The Tree, Annie and the Fire, Meetings and Re-Meetings, and The Breakout. I also liked the demi-denouement of that arc in Get It Together, although there's no Anthony, just the result of it.
I of course love many many other chapters, but I'd say the Anthony arc is some of the best writing I've seen from Tom, although not everyone will agree.
My other favorite chapter is The Stone. Every page of that was delightful. Also loved The Realm of the Dead, Red Returns, The Coward Heart, Fire Spike, The Great Secret, and every page with Parley and Smitty. And Mort. And the Robot King who is the most hilarious hands-down.

Broken Glass And Other Things - the beginning of Jeanne, the fairies, Muut, Annie being a stoic little badass Fangs Of Summertime - an unexpected violent mess, 5 important characters introduced, what's not to like A Ghost Story - a very classic (for GC) mix of sweet and creepy The Old Dog's Tricks - that jolly elfsberry, gawd. And the scene by Renard's body (which will come to play again some day, I'm sure) Divine - just so satisfying to reread after "Annie and the Fire" + first Mecha-angel sighting The Realm Of The Dead - possibly best Kat ever Totem - the opening 8 pages are quite gorgeous. I'd pay good money for this page on a poster, with or without text bubbles: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1473

Easy, my favorite chapter is Skywatcher and The AngelIt's mysterious, you feel the size and "freedom" Gunnerkrigg Court. Ann is 100% Ann. Kat is awesome. Shadow is awesome. Robot is awesome. The robots are handsomely noble. The King is next level. That parrot god drop. That Diego drop. That Jeanne(spelling i know)! assassination She died and we did nothing. truly a perfect chapter Yes, I think this chapter would be the perfect standalone "sneak preview" to hook me on the webcomic.

(Re-necroing the thread after more than 6 years, because I'm re-reading the comic)
I agree with all of your choices but, after all this time, I have to add that Tom hit another high point in chapter 84, "Knowledge of Everything". In which Loup casually accesses Coyote's on-demand omniscience to figure out computation and technology
