Chilling.Does this mean blood will be spilled in chapter 15? There's the bismuth symbol again. I guess that means those scissors are school property.

Um... My first thought was Annie and Surma's hair. And the cut on Annie's face. But other than that, nothing is leaping to mind...

What a total cocktease.
I'm going to spend this week somewhere with no internet connection, and be slowly driven mad by pondering who – or what – Red is.

Hm, for half a second I thought I was reading No Rest For The Wicked ;D Then I thought of birthdays, "Returns". Hmmm. EDIT: Also (jeez, I over use that word), Tom doesn't say whether it's second year or what. Sadness.

When I saw the chapter's title page, I had one odd notion which I hope will not come true (even though it's a trivial matter); I put together the fact that Annie's hair is red and the picture of the scissors, and wondered if she'd go for a really short hair-cut this year. I'd rather that she didn't because I think that her current hair-style suits her a lot better, though it probably doesn't matter that much, anyway.
But it probably has to do with something else, though we don't know what as yet. Pity that we have to wait another two days to start finding out.

Perhaps there will be a new wing of the school that needs the red ribbon cutting (hence the scissors) but later they find the ribbon has mysteriously repaired itself (hence "return of the red") and antics ensue. I'm pretty much sure, based on the evidence we have so far, that this is going to be how the chapter pans out.

Probably the biggest question about the title (which has been touched on a couple of times) is, "Is the word 'Returns' being used here as a verb or as a noun?"
At first, I thought that it might be used as a verb, except that I don't know who "Red" might be. (Annie's a redhead, but since she stayed at Gunnerkrigg during the summer holidays, she's obviously not returning.) Then I thought that it might be used as a noun, as in "the returns of the students who left during the summer holidays", in which case "Red" would be used here as an adjective modifying "Returns", rather than as a subject. Though that then raises the question of why the returns are red. At least we'll find out, eventually.

Which could fit in with it being another Zimmy and Gamma story.

Perhaps Red Skelton will return from the grave to give a show at the Court.

(Annie's a redhead, but since she stayed at Gunnerkrigg during the summer holidays, she's obviously not returning.) Actually, I think that "red" here *does* refer to Annie. And, although it's true that she can't logically return to Gunnerkrigg, she *can* return to Gillitie Wood. Maybe this is the chapter in which Annie pays the Coyote a visit.

I thought that this could definetly be Zimmy, those eyes always did creep me out... And remember, her eyes were only red for a short time and she acted... different. So, at a guess, amnybe she needs that cleansing again?

Um, I just watched Heroes season 2 episode 2 ... dress-makers scissors (But of course this chapter was written before it so it matters not ...)

Hey, am I the only one who thinks Red might be someone we haven't seen before, who was away during Annie's first year for some reason? Perhaps even the Not-Jones woman in the photo? Her hair could be red for all we know.

Red could be a reference to Annie's cut on her cheek from the white lady. It might resurface like it did in the presence of Zimmy.

Maybe "Red" was the red-haired suicide fairy. She finally found someone to kill her, and now she's starting classes at Gunnerkrigg.
Of course, seeing as she'd be a year below Annie, it would be hard for their paths to cross.
