It's interesting how a few pages ago they had discussed him using Annie's powers (presumably the fire ones) for himself, and here he is, using fire after all...

How much the form influences the inhabiting spirit, also in Rey's case, and maybe others (forest fairies for one). Renard said something a long time ago that I am too lazy to look up tonight about the form and the mind that's had me speculating that his plush-doll body had some impact on how he relates to Antimony, and in general how a change in the body in the Gunnerverse can change the mind of the individual. [edit] Something to the effect of, "isn't the mind but the plaything of the body?" Actually, Renard was being sarcastic in that scene. Tom has confirmed that the reality is actually the opposite; Renard changes shape depending on his mood, not vice versa. Anyway, so much about my theory of Hetty being Adam's sister's spirit. Unless he's secretly a half-human hybrid? I guess that's stretching it a bit... I really wonder what conclusion this little story is going to take...

I for one am glad he went through with it, seeing as that's not his sister's ghost. At most it's some entity that used her stories about her doll to inhabit it. But now the questions are, what will it try to inhabit next, and what will Renard do with all his free date nights? Re: the 'inhabit next' issue: As someone pointed out early on, needles have eyes.

Obviously Hetty's goal was to krill all humans. For that, the fires of judgement are uprawn her. I always thought something was a bit fishy with her. Reynardine, Annie told you to not stay out too late, and here you are, out past first light. I fucking love you guys. Never change. It's interesting how a few pages ago they had discussed him using Annie's powers (presumably the fire ones) for himself, and here he is, using fire after all... He's a dirty cheater, though, he's using accelerant.

It pains me to see Tom's beautiful last frame spoiled with a text bubble. If nothing else, making the comic his full-time job has let him make some astonishing art!

Why was everyone assuming that Hetty was originally a human? The only other example in the comic of an entity trapped inside a toy was Reynardine, who was originally a fox.

So much for Hetty as a recuring character :/ Maybe not, there's probably other dolls around. Maybe it can find a hotter bod and she and Renard can rekindle their old flame someday. I hope you're happy. You've made me log in for the first time in years just to post this: [/quote]

This is all just a big misunderstanding. Hetty thought she was in Gunnerkrill Court.
I am sure they'll all have a good laugh about it later.

Hi Hette
it's a giant shrimp!
She acted awfully fast to Rey's attack, maybe this isn't over

As others mentioned before, I too find it a bit worrying that Rey is still so quick to destroy life, best intentions or no.

Hopefully nothing with eyes turns up in the next scene. especially not that huge pile of needles with eyes. though we don't know if that's how all possession works, it could be unique to the gift of coyote, especially cause coyote has a lot of eyes.

We were all thinking it was maybe a human spirit trapped in there Nope! Obviously Hetty's goal was to krill all humans. For that, the fires of judgement are uprawn her. And Reynardine won't shrimp from his duty. Or for the non-Americans. So much for Hetty as a recuring character :/ More like refried character Why was everyone assuming that Hetty was originally a human? I thought "demon" ever since we saw her weird pupils. Didn't leap to shrimp demon though.

Or for the non-Americans. Barbie dolls have become pretty international really, not just American. Using Barbie as slang for BBQ is seen more as an Australian slang, but even that has kinda become known to mean bbq in most english speaking countries thanks to media cross-pollination. I'd guess closer would be 'Or not predominantly English speaking countries or those unaware of the slang from media'

I'm concerned she'll find another vessel in the next couple pages.

And no, Mr. Siddell saying that Renard changes form to suit his mood doesn't rule out his form having an impact on his mind. Maybe not, there's probably other dolls around. Maybe it can find a hotter bod and she and Renard can rekindle their old flame someday. I hope you're happy. You've made me log in for the first time in years just to post this... Given that Hetty is trapped in the doll body with a seal i don't see how she was able to leave it fully, perhaps Tom simply wanted us to see how the real Hetty looks like. Also, even if the spirit leaves the original body, if does not find a vessel soon after leaving the old one they die do they not?
Eye of the needle may be a stretch and we don't know if all body snatching powers have the "eye" limitation of just Rey's Coyote given ones do.
This also poses an interesting question of where did Hetty originally come from, the forest? in which case are her powers Coyote granted? did Coyote sent Hetty to court to get Rey to revolt against Annie and come back to the forest? Seems a bit of a stretch, but you never know what that guy is up to.

According to Coyote, once he grants a power to someone, he himself can't use that power (or grant it again, logically), so therefore if he had given it to hetty, he couldn't have granted it again later to Rey, or vice versa. Of course though, Coyote isn't likely to be the ONLY entity with that kind of ability. Also, maybe hetty is a ghost shrimp.Semi lame attempt at a pun, LAUGHING ON LINE. Anyways, I tried a search for shrimp spirit and came up with a bunch of sites about spirit animals or animal totems. Tried shrimp demon and there is apparently a species called the Demon Shrimp (which doesn't look particularily demonic), which is an invasive species in the UK. Maybe Tom got the idea from that.

How did a little girl get a shrimp spirit? Maybe it was a brine shrimp, otherwise known as "Sea Monkeys" - you see in those comic book ads. If that is the Court's version of Sea Monkeys, every teenage boy will have the X-Ray Specs. Though knowing the Court, they probably cause tumors. I imagine talking tumors. They keep saying perverted jokes to teach the kids a lesson.

I'm not concerned at the prospect of losing Hetty as a potential regular. We have enough characters with their own sets of ample enigmas to be adding more in a Questionable Content -like fashion.
What's more pressing about this chapter is what insights it may offer on Reynardine's personality. He is still quite able and willing to kill a lesser being (thinking of the groundskeeper here). This time, though, I'm sure his relationship with Antimony is coloring his thoughts, and I'm really curious how.

Will someone let Lindsey or Bud know their delinquent daughter's been at it again? That was my first thought, too. But you know what? This probably is Bud! It was all just a test! They were trying to see whether Rey can be trusted and what kind of tricks he was up to. So, will it be like that Futurama episode where Bender impersonates his twin, Flexo, to see if his girlfriend is cheating on him? Bud, disguised as Hetty: Come, Reynardine, help me be eeeeeeeeevil. Rey: Sorry, not interested. Bud: But eeeeeeeevil is so much fun! Rey: <Rolls eyes.> <Months later> Rey: Fine, fine! If I help you just this once, will you shut up about it? Bud: Aha! <casts off disguise> Caught, red-handed! We knew you were up to something, Renard!

Hopefully nothing with eyes turns up in the next scene. I can't remember if the rule about an object needing eyes, be they real or not, in order to be possessed is only for Reynard. If not, then would the eye of a needle count or is that stretching things?

Question: Does anyone know who exactly this Hetty the shrimp is? Could it be based of some sort of myth or just Tom's OC?

Any possible links between the symbol being either phosphorous, oil, or something and the fact that Hetty is some kind of malevolent shrimp spirit? Krill contain an abundance of Omega-3 fatty acids (essential oils) and phospholipids. Bandwagon edit: Man, Hetty, you just gone and got yourself grilled in action

I know, I read the page on my phone last night and the last panel fit perfectly against the edges of my screen. Would be neat to have that as a wallpaper.
