Burning the doll might just free Hetty from her contract, as the destruction of Reynard's wolf toy would do the same. He might be basically telling her to get lost and stop bothering humans. I like this idea. Next strip: "So, you want to be free? Here's a match. Leave the boy alone." Also, I think Rey won't get out of this unscathed, and Annie will notice.

I think that'd make for a rather epic conclusion. Tough love in the form of FLAMES. This chapter makes me love Reynardine even more than when Annie and Kat were first given that warehouse, and he pinned Kat with questions about how Annie was doing in school and other affairs. His honour is beyond what any in the court expect of him. PS: I think if anyone did a dubbed short, this chapter would be AWESOME to do. I see Hetty with an Azula-esque voice.

I don't think, he's going to catch her on fire. But if he does, any guesses on a one-liner? I'm going with "Doll... You need to LIGHTEN up." *throws match*

Well... Rey may be getting into trouble, but at least he's not staying out too late.

Even if Renard doesn't set Hetty on fire, lighter fluid is still a solvent. What is that going to do to Hetty's painted face?

Straight to "kill it with fire!" At least Rey's learning something from his time bound to a fire elemental.

So Rey remains a murdering psychopath. Ethics are not applicable only for people we like and not applicable for people we do not like. Rey's a cute wolf shaped thingy that loves Anne. He also is a "demon" thing who possesses living beings and as a result kills them. He's killed two "people" up to now. Lets see him kill a third? Even if the little dolly demon is a psychopath herself Rey is not judge, jury and executioner.

Hasn't it been said that destroying the wolf doll would free Reynardine? So burning Hetty might not be the best idea from an evil-in-a-can perspective. Maybe Hetty will be the one to light a match in frustration, then stagger around ranting before finally drifting off as a black wisp. I don't believe that has ever been stated. It's been stated that taking the toy away from Antimony would break the contract, but I don't believe that destroying the toy has ever been mooted. Personally, I think that what happens to the "soul" within the toy probably depends on the nature of that soul. For example, it's been all but outright stated that Rey can't continue to exist for long outside of a body, which is why he needed to possess the toy in order to live. Maybe the same is true for Hetty, but maybe not. Oh, and I don't see what your subdividing of the steps I outlined adds to the description of the process. True, the process could have been broken down further but I was attempting to point out what I believed Rey's attitude was at the key points, not to outline each step in detail. Thank you to JT from the comments section for this very appropriate link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YH5MEyNuIM :-D

A person might kill once and never kill again, but three murders establishes a definite pattern, and it must only get easier. I'm guessing he won't go through with it, though.

For some reason I took the lack of specificity to mean the circumstances and outcome of the original altercation were less known than they are. Upon rereading it, I have no quibbles.

No, you reap what you sow. As in sowing seeds, which then grow into things which you reap. . . . Although your way IS punnier, given the context.

I don't really think fire could destroy Hetty; from the crack, I just assumed she was mostly ceramic.

So Rey remains a murdering psychopath. If anything, Rey remains a dreamer he was back when Surma was still alive. I mean, putting up a Shakespeare-level drama for a minor provocation? (Which probably wasn't even meant as a provocation, considering Hetty's attitude and all) Yeah, that thought occurred to me. A person might kill once and never kill again, but three murders establishes a definite pattern, and it must only get easier. I'm guessing he won't go through with it, though. Well, continuing the pattern would mean Antimony gets a new toy. And Coyote, a good laugh.

I wonder if Rey has ever talked about this with Annie, even glancingly. I hope he has/will do, because it seems like the sort of thing where talking to her might give him some closure.
On an unrelated note, Hetty is pretty darn flexible in that last panel. I'm impressed.

Maybe Hetty will be the one to light a match in frustration, then stagger around ranting before finally drifting off as a black wisp. * For whatever reason (probably a threat of some kind from the Court), Rey switched to the Orjak's body. This is the first time it's confirmed to him that the previous body dies. * Rey remains in the Orjak's body out of shame and makes no attempt to switch bodies for a long time because he knows that body will die as well. This part should probably be: * Rey takes Daniel R. Schiff. * That big guy and some others come after him threateningly. * He switches to the dragon (Schiff body dies, although he may not notice right away) and absconds. * After a few years (to fill out the timeline) that big guy tracks him down and imprisons him. But he said that "he bested [sivo] in a fight" I don't think that switching to him with his possession power would count as that.

Even if the little dolly demon is a psychopath herself Rey is not judge, jury and executioner. Let's keep in mind that he's a centuries-old nature spirit from the time of the Crusades- he may have modernized simply because everyone else has, but I'd be surprised if he didn't act like a psycho every so often- dueling for one's honor, for example, didn't fully die out until the late 1800s, and if someone actually challenged you to a duel over some insult nowadays you'd certainly think they're crazy. He may view murder of Danny and attempted murder of Annie as dishonorable because they weren't combatants or threatening anyone. Sivo's death was the result of a fight (and therefore honorable for both parties if we go by pre-modern ethics...), and if he kills Hetty that's because he's protecting a child and punishing her for (presumably) the murder of Adam's sister, in addition to defending his own honor. That doesn't mean he's right in doing so, just possible explanations.

I've just thought - what if Renard STILL wants to kill Annie? Maybe he realised he'd missed his chance when he became contractually bound to obey her, and he's been waiting these two years for an opportunity to off her. And he's just been very good at lying through his teeth and concealing his motives. It goes without saying that I hope this is not true.I. WAS. WRONG.

To be fair, she was probably intending to do the same to Adam. You reap what you sew! Nitpick: You reap what you sow. You wear what you sew. (And yes, they are pronounced the same, or nearly so, in most versions of English. The other version of "sow", that rhymes with "now", is a barnyard animal.)

So I figure Rey's got something more in mind than just lighting her up without any further comment. I think this is so that he has a threat to hold over her, so that she won't wander off while he gives her The Reason You Suck speech.
Once he gives the speech, I don't know. He might just light her up afterward, or he may give her one last chance to repent of her murderous designs on Adam. (Which she won't do, and then he'll light her up.)

I have a feeling that was a pun, not an error. Using similar words in wrong context on purpose to invoke a humorous response by changing the meaning to something crude/rhyming/funny that is related to the topic.

Not sure why you think that -- in the previous strip, Coyote talks about Rey killing a human.

OK, one thing I've been puzzling over with this revisiting of the attempted taking of Annie is that the eye-with-slash symbol apparently didn't do anything to protect her. Is it purely advisory, then, and not an active device? If so, why?

Is it purely advisory, then, and not an active device? If so, why? You mean the eye-with-a-slash symbol she didn't have? (I would presume the ones on the sides of the room are part of imprisoning him - so he can't just abandon his current body and leave to hunt down another. If they were advisory, they'd probably be on the OUTSIDE of the room.)

That's what I thought too, but why would he do it? No laught came out of it, and Annie didn't change her opinion of Rey. Dunno...

Um. What if Hetty has the same limitation as Rey - if she can't get a new body quickly, she dies? Would she try to take over the wolf toy? Does Rey end up with a room mate? This could go very badly.
