Given Monday's wonderful page, I headed over to fanfiction.net to see if there was any Annie x Jones fanfiction floating about. I was pretty disappointed to find only 7 fics total, 2 of which weren't even in English! XD I was wondering if people would be interested in doing some kind of Gunnerkrigg Fanfiction Week thing where we try to churn out as many Gunnerkrigg fanfics as we can. We can start a thread here (as some people seem to be attempting to do?) of we can try to build upon the 7 fics already on the other site. I think that if people just try to produce one piece of fan fiction during the event, no matter how good or bad, or long or short, we'll eventually have a large collection of Gunnerkrigg stories to read one day. And the more writers we have, the more diverse our collection could eventually become! Tom's already given us plenty of fanfic fodder (especially with those more recent chapters). Just off the top of my head: Smitty x Parley Zimmy x Gamma William x Janet (now we head into non-canon/cracky) Annie x Kat Robot x Shadow Red x Blue Annie x Kamlen Annie x Jones Annie x Coyote/Renard/Ysengrin (scary...) Robox x Boxbot (LAUGHING ON LINE) Kat x just about every female character :3 The possibilities are endless! On top of that, you could write fics without romance, if you so choose. So, who's up for a Gunnerkrigg Fanfiction Week event? I don't check this forum too often (only when a bizarre page appears that causes me to look around at other people's reactions XD), so I wouldn't be the best person to organize it. But we basically just need to pick a week for the event, and a place for people to put their fanfics. Happy writing, people! (Hopefully )

(Hopefully ) I don't know that focusing so much on pairings is such a good idea. I like stories that just let things evolve naturally. Granted, certain people hang out more often, but getting them out of their shell is where the meat is at. Just my personal thoughts on it. As for a Fanfiction week, If people are interested go ahead, I guess that would be interesting. I don't know how many people in this "fandom" (or whatever you wanna call it ) are actively doing that. My impression has been not many, as its still a fairly small group of people. As you can see there are only 7 total for FFnet. When I first made this thread, there were four and at least two of the new ones are mine, so its not a big field, if you catch my meaning. Writing fics for GC was kind of a challenge for me. Its easier to step on canon by accident, and then you loose that feel that makes it Gunnerkrigg Court. I'm working on one in my lazy-time right now, and I like the way its coming out. Drop me a line if you're interested and you want to compare notes or do beta-reading (I have mad grammar nazi street cred).

There may be more GC fics on Archive Of Our Own.
It's funny. I've been following GC for six years and in all that time I've never been interested in reading or writing fanfic of it. Just last year I started reading Homestuck, and within a month of catching up I found myself neck-deep in HS fanfiction, and before the year was over I'd written some myself. Yet I still like GC better than HS, and I still have no particular interest in GC fanfiction.
My best guess for what's going on is that I'm turning to fanfic because of certain dissatisfactions with the source material. Andrew Hussie makes me love certain characters, then I find myself wishing these characters could have more screen time than they get in canon, so I start reading (and writing) fanfic to get my fix. Whereas with GC, Tom's focus and my interest coincide so well that I don't feel the need to turn anywhere else. And Tom has shown so much talent for defying my expectations and making the results completely awesome, I've just learned to accept that Tom knows what I want better than I do.

I wrote another story over the course of this course of this week. The tone is a bit more somber than the other ones, but I like the way it took shape. I have updated the OP. Tell me what'cha think. A Fire in the Deep

So, who's up for a Gunnerkrigg Fanfiction Week event? That's good, but let's modify your ruleset a little: - Events shall be held monthly, for sake of convenience/sanity on everyone's parts.
- Events shall be hosted by a select panel of distinguished judges (read: anyone who cares to join in). Entrees will be judged (constructively) on Story and Writing Skill, as most other categories are mostly superfluous. Any additional comments/concerns/etc. will be noted alongside the review, but ultimately do not affect the score.
- Stories are to be a minimum of 100 words, to ensure at least a minimal effort from posters. (Contested! Use as a guideline rather than a hard rule).
- Keep shipping to a minimum. This is not because of you, Actually Good Shipping Fan-fiction. This is because of how often this devolves into people writing things like "cat an anny STARTS MAOKING UT" or otherwise angst-ridden fluff, and really, I'm not sure if anyone's too keen on that.
- Themes! To make up for stripping our idea-generator of his prime source of fanfic-fuel, each month will come with its own challenge, like "Write a story starring Boxbot + Robox," or something like that, just so we can help get ideas going. It will not be frowned upon if a given poster decides to write about something else instead. This part's optional.
Any objections/comments?

For a bit of variety, every now and again you could have a "drabble only" event wherein each story should be as near as possible to exactly 100 words. You can get some remarkable results this way: admittedly some of them remarkably awful but it's well worth the effort ;D Edit: to fix markup.

Alright, with the rules mended, we can get to the fun part. We must choose our judges.
Three select candidates shall fight to the death with a bowl of yeah no um, I guess we'll just ask for credentials. Other than that, anyone can try out, so don't be afraid to step up.

I'm thinking broken pool sticks, to keep it interesting. I don't really have any "credentials". I'm writing for a college newspaper right now, I guess the closest thing to creative writing cred would be the Op-Ed section. They aren't too picky about what you put there, as long as people will sit through the whole paragraph and then glance at the ads.

I humbly submit this fancomic. It has more than 100 words in it and it has a theme, a GC/EVA crossover.

Oh, by "credentials" I basically meant "I have some working knowledge of how fiction works," so again, pretty much everybody's welcome. Don't sweat it.

No way you have a massive, mysterious urban landscape without battle mechs. It's simply not allowed. Out of curiosity, why lysergic acid diethylamide? Does Lucy in the sky w/ diamonds help pilots see the instruments better, or just remove their fear?

Out of curiosity, why lysergic acid diethylamide? Does Lucy in the sky w/ diamonds help pilots see the instruments better, or just remove their fear? In the anime they pressurize the cockpit/capsules with LCL, a yellow liquid that protects the pilots from impacts and g-forces and oxygenates the pilot's blood directly. But I can't claim credit for that joke line, it is lifted from a very old fansub parody video. [edit] Perhaps I should add that I think the original line from the anime is, "Don't worry, once your lungs fill with LCL your blood will be oxygenated directly." And this is a good example of some of the humor being inaccessible to people not familiar with the show. [/edit]

On a side note, I think we should encourage non-canon stuffs for newcomers. Mostly because, if we restrict ourselves to canon, we're going to drive ourselves five kinds of crazy trying to not step on the toes of the main comic.

I hereby bump the fanfic thread for the benefit of any new people who might be interested. If you're into shipping [switches to IceT voice] we have a special room just for that. shipping thread There's a fanart thread too but it is stickied and easy to find. While I'm here, would anyone be interested in reading about the adventures of mysterious transfer student Marty Stewart? His origins and abilities are unknown but he possesses unusual insights into the other students and he is very popular with everyone (except Winsbury). Just kidding. ;D

Well now that this thread is alive again I don't feel bad for responding to this. I never thought of fanfic as a coping mechanism for my dissatisfaction with a story. Now that you mention it, mezz, makes a lot of sense -- makes me a little sad about reading Harry Potter fanfic for so long... but only just a little. Oh, and I agree with GK Sierra's sentiment concerning your last comment about Tom there. ^.^ So damn true.

Wow...
Usually I am not a fan of fanfic but I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know it was possible to write FF of that quality.
Have you ever considered penning a novel?

I agree with Mezzaphor that I've not really felt the craving to read Gunnerkrigg Court fic the way I often do for other fandoms. Still, if I did stumble upon a fic that seemed interesting (or got it recced to me) I would give it a try, just like I enjoy well-drawn Gunnerkrigg Court fanart when I see that. I probably would read the Naruto/GC merging someone mentioned on page 1.

Go fanfic writers! Using someone else's world for your stories is a good way to get past the whole world-building bit for new writers and it's a great way to contribute to a fan community. Don't forget some of history's greatest writers did fanfic and it often made up some of their best work. The story of King Arthur as we know it today?- fanfic. Most of it was written as add-ons by writers other than the orginal author. Steven King has written Cthulu fanfic and it's considered cannon (as I beleive is most of the mythos). Sherlock gets plenty of great adaptations even today (Asimov even wrote Sherlock fanfic). Wells' The Time Machine has a cannon sequal written tears after his death. I'd say more but it's midnight and what I said already probably doesn't even make sense.

If it's canon it's not a fanfic. That's like saying "Aliens" is a fanfic of "Alien" because they have different directors.

If it's canon it's not a fanfic. Well, it could be " Ascended Fanon", but that's besides the point. I think the point he's making is that some of the best stories out there are extensions of other stories, written by those whom were inspired by the authors of the original works. He's trying to encourage you here; don't put him down for it! ;D

Alright, I've got one. It involves Jones and not a whole lot of other characters because apparently nobody else managed to last a thousand years after the events of the comic. If for some reason my writing prof googled this or something, yes, this is me, I wrote this and didn't just find it on the internet. I'm open to feedback. edit- Seriously? it doesn't let you rename the files when you post them? meh, whatever, it's called Wandering Eye Cries. Attachments:

That's a nice half-chapter. Where's the rest? I'm no minimalist, but in some cases less is more. Perhaps it is a little lazy to leave what happens immediately afterwards to your imagination, but a story has to end somewhere. I've got another one outlined right now if that was your cup of tea, but I might wait until Chapter 41 wraps up to pound it out. Great job by the way tpman. An interesting story idea, considering what we know about Jones.
