Wow. It's been so long that I actually wasn't expecting to ever see that happen.

Wow! A cliffhanger! Next chapter: "Doctor Disaster and Something Completely Unrelated" XD I was actually thinking (at least before today's page) that we hadn't seen Doctor Disaster in a very long time now (nearly 15 chapters, since he was one of the few named infrequent characters not to have a cameo in chapter 32), and that it would be cool if the next chapter was about him. But now, I don't think so.

What saddens me is that she didn't say "dad", but "father". Yet, it's perfectly coherent and a nice touch.

Wow. Wednesday, or perhaps Friday, could not get here fast enough! Edit: Here's the 'key word' reference I totally missed that reference. Also, no, between the extra page (which will be completely unrelated) and the new title page, it'll be Monday before we learn anything about Annie's talk. And THAT'S assuming that the next chapter will address it at all.

I was expecting this to happen sometime.
My guess is dad has been obsessed with same thing as before, trying to find a cure.
He can no longer save mom which means he just tries even harder with daughter.
Dad may also fear for his own life in this search for a cure. There may also be ethical dilemma if a cure is possible but comes at cost to something else.

Wow. I have to say, since I first started reading the comic at Power Station, and reread the entire comics in one weekend, I've been waiting for this moment. It's definitely on my mind every time there's a summer or holiday break, "Ok, we're this much closer to Annie hearing from her father!" Even though I've been eagerly anticipating it, this definitely caught me off guard, but yet I'm so excited to see what happens next! So strange that it's a casual cell phone call, but somehow it seems appropriate for a distant father. Man, oh man. I have a feeling though that it's going to be a while before we actually see Anthony.

Also: there's a bismuth symbol on the back of the phone. It was probably a court-issued phone given to Jones and possibly other staff members. Something the court made itself, the whole place seems to be pretty self-sufficient so it's not too much of a leap to guess that they make their own phones since their clothes and food are all made at the court. Aren't there also shops?

"Yes, she is." Ah, but the tracking is on. That speech bubble is fun. I'm sure it's nothing. Angular = electronic. Gray for the static, kinda like the background noise in Spring Heeled (I dunno for a better example. Have we had bad cell reception in comic before?). We had a good one. Court's radiotelephony, Jones calls Juliette. So no, it's not normal. So she didn't "Hear" from her father for two years. Now that she's heard from him...we may not get any questions answered anyway. But boy will Annie have some tough ones for dad. Why? She already got most answers, and the rest isn't that hard to guess anyway. P.S.: Rey will kill him... For all he has done... Of course, we saw resentment because Antony ended up with Surma, but he wasn't the one keeping Renard locked all this time, so... Also whatever the squabble was, it split James + Donlans vs. Surma + Anthony. Assuming it was over that possession incident (it seems to fit in several different ways), he probably had less reasons to dislike Anthony than these three. "I just wanted to apologize for missing your birthday, I'm sorry, I've just been so busy [REDACTED]. See you again in a thousand pages!" Also: there's a bismuth symbol on the back of the phone. Exactly! "...I wanted to call you earlier on your birthday, but all the Court's communication gear on the Moon got smashed to dust in a weird incident and then the expedition invited me as a medic, so... Antimony, what's this sound? Did you just slam your head into a doorjamb? I'm telling you as a surgeon, it's unhealthy!" What - did you think the line about the "expensive equipment" was random? ;D

The bad reception must be from the other end, since the "transferring a call" line came out fine.
I'm not surprised that Anthony's only available on the phone, but I wasn't expecting it for a while.

It's been over two years since she last saw or heard from her father. It's been less than that since the end of chapter 14. Which means, I guess, that either it actually isn't her father on the phone (there's no clear statement of that yet), or some other weird shenanigans are in progress. But I guess we'll have to wait and see... On a probably unrelated note, is this the first time there's been a phone in this comic? Seems weird to think that with them being all over the place in the real world, but I can't remember ever seeing one in the Court before.

It's the first time we have seen a cell phone, I think. But we actually saw a phone back in "Two Strange Girls" when Antimony tells Kat she had tried to contact her father after she got hurt.

If my calculations are correct, the "would not hear from him for over two years" page was made nearly 5 years ago. Now that's what I call forward planning!

Monday can not get here soon enough. It will be the new chapter anyway. That Siddell is one sneaky Mister. Chapter full of wacky hijinks and fluff... SUDDENLY PLOT!!! Aaaand end chapter. Good show, Mr. Tom. Good show. We all could pretend we're not in the least bit masochistic about the way Tom teases the readers... Ah, why bother. ;D Just please, PLEASE let the next chapter start with the phone call. Wherefore i bet on a flashback. Y'know, little things like how exactly Surma ended up breaking all contact with the Court (self-exiled?), and so on. Leaving us thoroughly bewildered and with about ten times the number of questions it will answer - but that's just the usual arrangement. Wow! A cliffhanger! Next chapter: "Doctor Disaster and Something Completely Unrelated" XD Oh, right. Randy didn't appear too long. So, no flashback. ;D It's been over two years since she last saw or heard from her father. Which means, I guess ...that she did "not hear from him for over two years". See what Tom did here?

But I guess we'll have to wait and see... What Tom meant, from what I can gather, is that when Annie said at the end of Chapter Fourteen that she wouldn't hear from her father for over two years, she was counting from the last time she saw him (presumably when she left Good Hope after Surma's death to go to the Court) rather than from the end of the first school year. Of course, it was ambiguously phrased, which explains the confusion.

When I first read this strip, before even reading the last panel I thought the person on the other end had said "incoming call from Mr Carver" instead of "for Ms Carver" and I was all "Damn, got my hopes for a shocking twist up for nothing." and then lo! It actually is Mr Anthony Carver. Did NOT see that coming. Tom, you are a mad genius.
I have four questions:
1: Will we finally get to meet the mysterious Anthony Carver? 2: Where has he been all this time?! 3: What are his plans?!! 4: What did Coyote have for lunch?!!!
All these questions (except for maybe the last one) will no doubt be answered in time, but I am on the edge of my seat (quite literally actually, but for a different reason than the reason I'm on the edge metaphorically).

Nah, not meet him... probably this call is all we'll have of him for a while. But I think we'll get to learn a few things from it. Anthony doesn't seem the kind to waste words, so if he called it has to be something big. Or maybe he just got her report, like fillerb suggested, which would actually be pretty awesome XD And welcome to the forum!

My imagination on the run again. on the other end of the line, Anthony currently looks like this: And the next line out of this mouth is: "Have you been consorting with.... MENTALISTS!!?"

I think I know how you feel. Everything in the story so far points to Anthony beeing a horrible father. But of course there is more to this picture, which is why I am so intrigued by this character. For me, it looked like he knew that due to his... mixed feelings and maybe being generally not good with kids Annie would have a horrible father and thus chose "none" over "worse than none". As reasonable and coldly benevolent as his reputation suggests. I hope for a flashback-chapter in the near future! Of course, since there are at least two of us, the probability noticeably diminishes. Y'know, right now I'm very relieved that Tom has such an extensive buffer of pages, cause he reads the forums, so he could read your post and think "Oh, hey, I could do that instead!". I mentioned that "thoroughly bewildered and with about ten times the number of questions it will answer" is what we'll probably get either way, right? A flashback would at least answer some questions. And the next line out of this mouth is: "Have you been consorting with.... MENTALISTS!!?" (innocently) There are Netheril fanfics?

What saddens me is that she didn't say "dad", but "father". Yet, it's perfectly coherent and a nice touch. I think it's fitting that she reverts to her cold and formal language to refer to her father, who she hasn't seen or spoken to since her character development. Even though it's formal, you can almost hear the emotion in the last panel. So good!

People, it lines up perfectly. It's commonly known that Antimony was transferred to Gunnerkrigg Court almost immediately after Surma's passing. From that point in time to now, it has most definitely been more than two years.
I'll put it in real numbers so it's easier to understand. 2000:Surma dies. Antimony goes to GC. 2001:End of first year. Antimony stays at GC during the summer. Says she won't hear from her father for more than two years. Early 2002: End of second year. Still no word from father. Mid 2002: Anthony calls Annie.
More than two years, guys.
