Make-up is icky and unwieldy. I feel for Kat.
Also, is Annie sneaking out to see Kat or is she just sneaking out? Or is her sneakiness just a device our esteemed auteur has employed in order to get Annie to Kat in her time of need?
I'm not sure I care, really. I'm just happy they have a chance to reconcile. A make-over may or may not be involved. Yay?

Could be that it's simply morning time, and Annie is just off to class and passed Kat along the way.

Aww, poor Kat. And poor Annie too, she looked so sad at Kat's curtains being drawn. Could be that it's simply morning time, and Annie is just off to class and passed Kat along the way. I'm more likely to agree with that--she has her bag, though I don't really know how much that counts for.

Gah!
*falls out of chair at the last panel* Good lord, what has she done to herself?!
I'm guessing she's trying to doll herself up to look nice for Aly, and realized that she doesn't know anything about applying makeup.

Kat wearing make-up: a more terrifying sight than all the ghosts and other strange creatures lurking in Gunnerkrigg Court and Gillitie Wood combined.
At least Annie might be able to give her some tips on how to do it correctly, judging from how well she's wearing her cosmetics. (As I said last week, she can do it without even looking cheap or tawdry - which may be a more amazing ability than being able to see the Guides or partly dampen Zimmy's reality-changing effects.) Or she just might point out to Kat that she doesn't need make-up and looks great the way that she is (though hopefully without it sounding like a speech out of an Afterschool Special).
(I certainly think that Kat doesn't need make-up where Aly's concerned; he's clearly enjoyed her company the first three days when she wasn't wearing it. Or has he suggested that she get herself up that way, off-stage? For his sake, we'd better hope not.)

Could be that it's simply morning time, and Annie is just off to class and passed Kat along the way. That makes sense. She stopped because she's worried Kat's apparently not out of her unit yet then peeked in because she heard Kat crying. I'm guessing Kat's mostly really worried about Aly leaving at the end of the week and wanted to tell him how she feels and felt she needed to look her best for that.

Annie can pull stuff off like that, and Kat... well, Kat cant. She shouldnt try. But, I bet that she thinks that ALy is going to like Annie for than her, and so she is trying to make herself look like Annie.... And, just no.

If Kat's afraid that Aly's going to like Annie more, then she clearly hasn't been paying much attention. Aside from that furtive glance that he gave her on Monday (which Kat doesn't seem to have noticed), he's barely even noticed Annie. (Well, that and when she was holding him off the ground - which he *definitely* would have noticed.) He certainly didn't seem at all concerned over the fact that his pop culture talk with Kat had driven her off - and it was Kat rather than Annie whom he was watching during gym class. Under those circumstances, why should Kat believe that it's Annie whom Alistair would rather go out with?
Kat's taste in make-up is far louder than Annie's. (And it's just like Annie to go with such understated coloring for her eyeshadow and lipstick. It fits her characterization so well.)
While I can't seriously imagine Annie getting all mushy over a boy, I'm now starting to wonder what she'd do if she started getting a crush. (At least we know that she wouldn't be talking about movies and bands with him, or doing a horrendous job with cosmetics.)

Annie is somewhat creepy and unsual (duh) so I don't think Aly would be even get too close to her.

Guh? *choke* No. No? No. No!? NO!!! BAD KAT! BAD!!! Annie, please fix Kat. She's broken her brain....... I was so not expecting this. Just goes to show - smart people can do some really dumb things. And other than my eyeballs, no casualties yet. So it's a good day.*shudders* Kat, you're naturally pretty. If you've got to do makeup, don't do anything more than a hint of lipstick. Seriously.

I thought that Kat looked absolutely adorable when she was smiling at Aly on his first day at Gunnerkrigg; she certainly didn't show any need for make-up there.

We don't know what Aly may have said to Kat in private that might make her think that he prefers Annie, boys have been impressed by stranger things than a girl picking them up by their lapels. Although the lead singer of Drugstore did that to my friend Adrian once and he was less than entirely happy.

One thought that I just had: it's a good thing for Kat that it was Annie who found her looking like that. Just imagine what it would have been like if it'd been her mother who'd seen her in all that loud make-up instead!
