Hey now, Annie, that's not very civilized! Is she trying to hold him up to the light? Does she think she can see through him? Aly clearly doesn't weigh very much! I wonder why people are so worried about him getting hurt. Is he some kind of construct / robot / glass man? The opposite of a shadow man? Edit: Hmmm.... Hollow bones? (ffej's bird hypothesis) Reminder: the early update is here: www.drunkduck.com/Gunnerkrigg_Court/index.php

I think it's more of a how much does he weigh kind of thing.

Wow. Just wow. I have about a million speculations on this, none of them any good. All I know is Kat won't be very impressed and will probably want an explanation.
Annie IS the type to start judo-flipping people or cut an (admittedly dead) robot bird open with a mere "excuse me". But the question is WHY?

Good question inDEED! How very rude of her! Also, that is quite hard to do. I mean, I've done it to my brother, but only if I could use a wall against his back for support, and only when he was holding himself up on my arms. Just grab and yank? Aly must be made of feathers!

I certainly hadn't seen Annie's action coming (and she'd better hope that Mr. Eglamore doesn't catch her doing that) - though that's one of the things that is so much fun about this webcomic. Things happen that you just didn't expect and yet which fit into the story so well (like Aly's slam dunk last week). Good surprises are very enjoyable.
We've now got two more pieces of information about Alistair that may help us solve the mystery about him: 1. He can't let himself get injured and 2. A 12-year-old girl can easily pick him up and hold him off the ground. Annie has a number of talents (everything from being able to see the Guides to being able to wear that much make-up without looking like an underage tart), but I doubt that super-strength is one of them. So I'd have to go for the "Alistair is a lot lighter than other boys his age" theory (which would certainly fit in with everything else).
And I hope that Annie's doing this out of "Time to figure out exactly what's going on here" and not "You're stealing my best friend away from me" - though she seems too mature for the latter.
Whatever the case, it'll be interesting to see what happens in the next instalment.

Gah, now I can't wait for the next update. Also, is it just me or does Eglamore's addressing Annie yesterday suddenly seem like an invitation? Kind of like: "Hey Antimony, I'll be looking the other way right now. Remember what I said earlier about not getting caught?"

Let's please all remember that no matter how mature Annie acts she is still twelve years old or so.

Maybe something bad happens to him when he gets upset/hurt. I don't think he Hulks out or anything, but it could be something werewolf-related.

Maybe he has just has haemophilia. As to why he can't get hurt, that is; I have no idea why he seems to be so light or fast.

Well, you've got to admit one thing. It's just like Annie to say "Pardon me" before lifting the kid off the ground.
I'd been thinking of the haemophilia possibility myself - but it would obviously have to have some strange fantasy-style quirk attached to it to explain the other strange things about Aly.
Almost everything is fitting in well as revolving around his condition: that he can't let himself get hurt, that he doesn't know where he's going after the week is up, his extra layers of clothes, his incredible speed - except for one thing. We don't know why he was looking so warily at Annie when they first met. Maybe he was afraid that something like this would happen?

*crawls out from under a rock after several months of lurking*
I'm going to have to go with the abnormally light theory, and somewhat combine it with the bird thing.
Perhaps he has been wearing more clothes lately because he is very susceptible to the temperature, and it has been getting colder? Sort of like how birds migrate during the winter and all...

I like the pixie theory!
He could also be a shadow man! Remember how way back in the very beginning, Shadow2 could shapeshift slightly to form words? A much older, more experienced shadow might be able to form a fully functional person!

The kid definitely needs to be eating more if An is able to lift him so easily.

That wasn't rude at all, she said pardon me first.
And I know Annie is very strong, but I'm guessing Aly is very light because I don't think Annie would be able to lift a boy his size that high off the ground without ANY visible effort.
Aly's light as a cloud, eh?

Of course! His clothes make him really light, meaning that he can go really fast without worrying about his bodyweight slowing him down, and that he can make big jumps where he needs to. But he couldn't get down or he'd blow his cover: he'd, like, gently float down instead of falling in the normal manner. Or maybe it's the other way round: as the week goes by, gravity affects him less, so he needs to wear more to compensate and weigh himself down. He could probably do that with a big block of iron or something, but that would arounse suspicion. I bet those shoes have lead weights in them. Hmm.

If this keeps up, the boys in Annie's class are probably going to wind up scared of her. Winsbury crosses paths with Annie and gets flipped. Alistair crosses paths with Annie and gets lifted off the ground by her. I've got the feeling that all her other male classmates are going to be nervously keeping away from her now, for fear that they'll be next.

You guys are over-complicating this.

See? Simple explanation!

Look at the way he's drawn in panel 3. Believe me, no one gets lifted off the ground with his members in that position -- he just seems to drift ! Then the T-shirt seems to weight down. It clearly supports the theory of his nearly-absence of weight. (I also agree that it explains why he couldn't get down from the hoop by himself -- and by the way, you're much more vulnerable and in danger without your weight slowing you down, which epxlains the ban on "dangerous activities").
As for the "Carver.", I believe Mr. Eglamore suspected she had understood and warned her not to attract attention on it (he saw her staring at Aly...). He was right, apparently.

I'd wondered myself whether the exchange between Eglamore and Annie was more a "larger story" element, showing that they're still on frosty terms with each other since the end of Chapter Nine (which was where we last saw Eglamore), rather than about the immediate story concerning Alistair - but I might be wrong here as well.

Something just occurred to me. Remember this? www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=121And all the alchemy clues? The four mystical elements were Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. In the treatise, Kat was depicted as Water, and Annie as Fire. I wonder if we just found our manifestation of Air. Aly's light as a cloud, eh? ;D

Perhaps he has been wearing more clothes lately because he is very susceptible to the temperature, and it has been getting colder? Sort of like how birds migrate during the winter and all... Hmm, problem with that is birds don't migrate south for the winter, they migrate north for the summer. Birds do fairly well with cold. Not altricial baby birds, but altricial anything doesn't do well with cold. On the third hand, Aly doesn't have feathers to keep himself warm. Very light, and quite possibly brittle (or maybe I just have too much miles vorkosigan living in my brain.) Very light bones would be good for amazing jumps, not good for landing, though.... Maybe he's wearing extra clothes as the week goes on not because he's getting cold, but because he bruises easily?
