In this episode:
Annie may be fluent in Polish, but she cannot speak Pop Culture. Strife!
Kat's static hair is very rockstar, and her sleeping module contains wind chimes. Fabulous!

Annie's skeptical expression is amazing. How *could* Kat like him that much if he likes Progidy's Fat of the Land over Music for the Jilted Generation?! Good spot on the wind chimes!

I can't say that I blame Annie for responding the way that she does. I'd never even heard of those two musical groups that Kat was talking about before now, either.
The way that her eyebrows are positioned makes her seem just a little annoyed; is she, deep down, feeling upset about the way that Kat's been focusing her attention on the new boy like that? Maybe.
I can definitely smell trouble in the works. The big question is, is this:
1. Annie feeling upset as her best friend ignores her (unintentionally) to spend more time with Alistair, or:
2. Alistair's got some nefarious scheme involving Kat, and is handling the situation to lead her further away from Annie so that Annie might not be able to come to the rescue when Aly springs his trap?
Or maybe a combination of the two. We'll have to see.
I like the touch of Kat's hair being all messed up after she removed her jumper.

Annie seems more amused than anything else by Kat's newfound interest in Alistair.

D'oh. In all the excitement I completely forgot the court is a boarding school. Obviously seperated sleeping areas for boys and girls too, so Annie and Kat at least have some time to talk without Alistair there. In fact, we've never heard anything about whether Aly even sleeps there; he may be just there for classes. Good call from the people that noticed that Annie being out of the conversation is at least partially the result of her being out of touch with pop culture.

Annie seems quite perceptive here, considering that she isn't the romantic type herself. I think Surma and Anthony taught her a little about understanding and predicting people.

I might just be imagining this, but Annie seems to be a little bigger lately. Did she have a growth spurt recently?

Nah, her head is also smaller and her shoulders, well, exist now. It's just slight changes in style from Tom, I think; compare with the first chapter to really see the differences. Of course, she's probably grown a little in the time she's been there (how long, don't know, but less than a year) but with comic book characters it's a bit hard to tell. Is that supposed to be Surma and Anthony, or am I totally missing something?

I share Annie's near-cluelessness about pop culture, at least as far as music goes: I'd never even heard of the music that Kat mentioned in today's page!
The Kat-Alistair business and Annie's feeling left out of things reminded me recently of something that C. S. Lewis once wrote: "People who know a lot of the same things can hardly help talking about them, and if you're there you can hardly help feeling that you're out of it."

I don't think that we're likely to see this scene in the chapter at all, but I find it tempting to imagine:
Alistair saying to Kat, "No, I don't have any twin brothers or other male relatives my age who are into world mythology and paranormal investigations and like mature-beyond-their-years redheads. Why do you ask?"

Rock on, Alistair. Fat of the Land is the most under-rated album of our time. \m/

I think the point is that they're pretty, erm, obscure. I hope that's the right way of putting it ...

Incidentally, I find myself thinking again of my comment (from a couple of months ago) that if Annie and Kat were ever at a rock concert, Kat would be eagerly cheering and shouting along with the other fans, while Annie would be simply watching the whole display in a bewildered silence and asking Kat to explain what the point of all this is again.
