I mean that not in relation to the comic, but to the fact that no one has even posted anything yet. Usually the discussion is going before the main site updates. Where the hell are everybody? Dead? Missing? Fallen in ravine? Held hostage, escaped, suffered a complete memory loss, gone to Iran to steal nuclear weapons off the Russians and live in the mountains as a mujahideen?
Anyway, that's a pretty interesting page. Seems Annie is getting ignored. Cue evil revenge plot which only ends with Aly dying right after confessing his undying love for Kat, while Annie, stricken with grief over what she's done, leaves Gunnerkrigg forever? Or maybe Annie's gonna hafta go find some other people to hang with (Winsbury or ZimmyGamma, God yes)? Or maybe nothing spectacular happens, Aly leaves after a week and becomes Kat's pen-pal or something.
Sorry for that, I've just drunk a jug of coffee or two.

I would've started the thread, but I was scared. It's hard to tell whether Annie's getting ignored or fades away by choice. Even if she felt bad about it, she's not really loud enough to tell Kat.

I plead one damn long day.
I think we can confirm a frisson between Kat and Aly. Annie just seems like a third wheel at this point.

I think that something bizarre is going to happen at some point (unless this is going to be one of those "change-of-pace" chapters in which no fantasy or sci-fi or paranormal elements pop up at all, and it's just a regular school story - which isn't entirely impossible). The big question is where the focus will be:
1. On Annie feeling alone and abandoned?
2. On Kat forgetting about Annie and spending more and more time with Alistair until she finally realizes that she's been neglecting her friend in the last couple of pages of the chapter?
3. Or a combination of the two?
I've got one bizarre idea, but this needs to go in the thread for that.

Incidentally, after rereading the page, I can see another reason why Annie's absenting herself from Kat and Aly's talk besides just the whole boy-girl connection between them. The big topic of their conversation is the various movies that they've seen and music that they've heard - none of which, I suspect, Annie's ever seen or heard in her entire life. She seems to have had a very minimal exposure to pop culture (the closest that she's gotten to it yet is watching Kat playing GTA, which wound up scaring her off video games probably for life), so what can she bring to the conversation? Small wonder that she's silent throughout.

So, whoever Aly is, he knows enough about games and movies to hold a conversation about such things with Kat. That more or less cuts out all magical and mechanical options in my speculation . . . what kind of ancient demon or crazy robot sits down and watches Popular Movie? (By the way, I LOVED Popular Actress and Popular Actor's performance in that one)

Still, I didn't feel he merited a Well Known Film Prize - especially up against Less Popular Actor (criminally underrated).

Poor Annie... I feel bad for her, I guess it's difficult when your best friend gets a 'special' friend. I wonder if there's going to be links with the photograph of their parents? Parallels if you will.
Speaking of which, there was one person in that strip who was never explained, she looked a lot like Gamma.

Small wonder that she's silent throughout. That's basically what I was going to say. You beat me to it. I don't think Annie is being deliberately cold and distant. I think she honestly doesn't know how to relate to people. Small talk is a mystery to her, so she fades away for the reasons Todd presented. I wonder, will she eventually get depressed about being unable to "connect" with the other kids? If Kat ends up spending all her time with Aly, Annie's going to be pretty well alone. (Time to go hang out with Mort and Shadow2! ) ;D Don't be. Whoever's here first should just start the thread - nobody will mind. We've been trying to keep the thread names consistent, but that's it really.

Or maybe Annie's gonna hafta go find some other people to hang with (Winsbury I seriously doubt that Annie's going to be hanging out with Winsbury, given their past history (and the fact that he's clearly still a jerk). Not to mention what might happen if Janet misinterpreted it. What I am curious about is this: is Annie's being left to one side in Kat and Alistair's new friendship going to be a major element of the chapter, or is it just a plot device to keep her out of the way for a while (like Kat having to clean up the lab in the last chapter)? I think the former, since: 1. Having your best friend spending all her time with a new guy and being left out of their conversations because you don't know a thing about what they're saying to each other is a much more serious issue than just being unable to participate in an adventure because you have chores to do. 2. Annie immediately introducing herself as "Antimony" before Kat can say her name, and the look that Alistair gives her as they're leaving the classroom, also suggest that there's something else going on beneath the surface. Tom's storytelling skills so far have been very good - too good for me to believe that all of this is nothing more than just a convenient way of making Annie absent from the bulk of the chapter (if that was all that he needed, he could just as easily have had her temporarily laid up in the infirmary due to an injury). I think that Annie's exclusion is to be a significant part of the chapter rather than just "I want to do a story about a girl getting a crush on a boy her age, it works better for Kat than for Annie, there's nothing for Annie to do in this story so I'd better work in a reason for keeping her off-stage so that my readers won't be asking where she is". But we'll just have to wait and see.

Not to mention what might happen if Janet misinterpreted it. I didn't say it was likely. I just feel that dear Willie Winsbury still has a lot to offer the story in terms of— I don't know. Winsburism. And I did offer another alternative.

Maybe it is a bit rough on Annie, but remember Kat has spent most of the term in the company of someone who is most likely incapable (due to being raised in a hospital) of having a normal teen chat about popular band/movie/game. She could do with a chance to let off some steam.

I think Annie is not expecting to be upset by this, and has removed herself intentionally, but it may affect her more than she thinks. Kat really is her best friend at this point, and even if she's "used" to being alone, it'll be odd for her not to be around.

Speaking of which, there was one person in that strip who was never explained, she looked a lot like Gamma. I hate to commit an act of mild thread necromancy, so I apologise for that, but I was looking through some of the older comics and found the one with the photograph of our cast member's parents, and the third girl struck me as well. I could work out who the rest of the people in that photo were, but who is this last girl? Her resemblance to Gamma struck me as well. I don't suppose anyone could shed any light on this? I tried using the search function to look for threads which might have mentioned this but it didn't turn up much.

After a bit of digging I found this thread, third post from the top. Seems she's a loose end so far.

Aha, thank you very much! That certainly rules out some of the speculation, then. No idea why I didn't find that thread when I searched for "Gamma" though (silly Proboards search function), but thanks!
