Spring-Heeled 2: [insert parody of book/film sequel here]... ... ... ...I-it's nearly 3 am over here. The witty part of my brain doesn't work at this hour.
Anyway, let me get this straight. The cliffhanger is meant to say that this chapter will go into a side-story (for lack of a better term) and that the regular narrative will then pick up from that point, right?

Under normal conditions this would be true. But Tom doesn't necessarily follow common narrative rules. (which makes it such a great story)

I'll confess that what I'm still most interested in in this chapter is not what happens with Jack, but what happens with Annie. As we discussed last week, Annie has been caught at the power station in a compromising situation - a violent break-in, a security robot destroyed, the power station activated (not to mention that she's sneaked out of her dorm at night). Even if the Court authorities find out that Jack's the real culprit, Annie could still be considered an accomplice or accessory (she went with him to the power station willingly, without being coerced). Any responsible school administration is going to have to deal with this - and deal with it severely.
At the same time, Annie is the protagonist, and if she gets expelled, or at the least, placed under such supervision and surveillance that she will no longer have the opportunity to do anything else during the remainder of her stay at the Court beyond regular classes, it'll be difficult (if not impossible) to keep the story going. So this chapter will have to provide a way to have the adults disciplining Annie in a believable way over her actions (something that won't make them seem lax), while allowing her to still be active in the upcoming chapters. The resolution of Jack's activities pales in comparison to this challenge, and so it's Annie's fate I'm most curious about, more than Jack's (the webcomic could continue even if he came to a tragic end in this chapter).

Under normal conditions this would be true. But Tom doesn't necessarily follow common narrative rules. (which makes it such a great story) I thought that cliffhangers are always (or almost always) followed by "Part Two" rather than by side stories. Chapter Seven, which ended with Annie falling off the bridge, was immediately followed by Chapter Eight, resolving that event.

I think so. There coming an explanation about things happened in last chapter. It's the meaning of that "2".

Gunnerkrigg Court, The Spring Unleashed
Whatever, I just want that it is already Wednesday. If it was a useful chapter name which would give something to speculate about. But it gives us no information except that the story is a sequel on the previous chapter (something we already knew through Formspring). Part two is just a way to say: Sorry, but I'm evil and don't want to give extra information about the next chapter through the title. *input evil laugh here*.

Spring Heeled 2: Back in the Spring!! <-- The exclamation points are important. This one involves Zimmy and Jack in a dance-off. For the fate of the WORLD. ...but can they dance the lovely dance even more better than a city fairy?

What kind of talk is that? Jack has your twelve essential vitamins and minerals rolled up into one crazy package, how could you not love 'im? I just don't find him likeable or interesting. He's the first character in Gunnerkrigg who I don't personally like and I resent that he's sidelining other, better characters. In Springheeled Part 1, Annie's dialogue consisted of 287 words. Jack got 525. I really, really don't want Gunnerkrigg to turn into the Jack Show. It's something I call Wolverine Syndrome. i think maybe he's something of a self-insert, but not really in a bad way, you know? also, counting words, creepy

i think maybe he's something of a self-insert, but not really in a bad way, you know? Self-insert? From what I know about Tom's personality they don't really seem similar in any way. I think the whole concept of a "marty stu" and self-insert characters is getting serious mangled these days on the internet. Going by a proper definition I really don't think Jack falls into either character.

Well to be fair to him the thread about a title page has already used the terms "Wolverine Syndrome", "self-insert" and "marty stu" and we all know how Tom feels about internetisms!
I am excited to see how Annie gets herself out of this situation, but I am guessing we will see what Jack is up to first so as to draw out the cliffhanger! Looking forward to Wednesday.

I hope my comment didn't come across as sarcasm - I genuinely love how he's able to be upfront about that stuff while still putting a twist of humor on it. And I suspect he was mostly upset about people going into detail about how much they dislike certain characters of his, especially when they don't actually explain what it is that makes them dislike that character so much. But yeah, I'm sure the internetisms don't exactly help matters. And yes, I'm so on the edge of my seat in anticipation of Wednesday... gonna get a little uncomfortable sitting this way until then, though... and that kinda rules out sleep, too... but that's okay because CAFFEINE

Going by a proper definition I really don't think Jack falls into either character. often self-inserts are different, which is precisely why they serve as an outlet for the things the author does not or cannot do for whatever reason. not so much trying to mimic yourself as imagining yourself in that position and desiring that you were - a way to act vicariously in a way different form your mundane actual self again, it's not a bad thing - in fact i think a limited fantasy life is very healthy. it's just a very strong *hunch* for me that jack is tom's. i could be wrong, but eh, id bet a couple bucks on it

Tom had pointed out on twitter that he had been accused of doing a self-insert/mary-sue for every single character in his comic.
