Jack can't fly, look closely at the white lines surrounding him. They're spider webs, clearly he is just stuck to the air...

Huh. More like "antigravity-heeled" than spring-heeled, I guess. The question now is, will Ether-Annie fly up there and drag him back down? How will she drag him down? He can carry her! The only solution is a flying martial arts fight.

Anyone else see cobwebs in that silvery "wake" he's leaving? Oh yeah. Jack's getting freakier by the minute. Also, made this side by side for the wiki. ...Now THAT'S something. Showing a real progression, there.

Something that just struck me: Jack keeps referring to him as Renard, not Reynardine. Considering that Rey changed his name when he defected from Gillitie, the choice of name here must be significant.
Theory the first: Jack is just using the name Renard because that's what all the Court records refer to him as.
Theory the second: The Court records mention both names, but Jack deliberately uses the old name.
Either way, someone is persistently using Rey's old name because they don't believe that Rey has changed, and they still see him as an agent of the Forest.

I still think, incidentally, that when the Court officials show up, Annie should not only tell them the whole story about what happened to Jack, but also (actually, she'd have to, since it's integral to explaining Jack's plight) about the side-effects that the power station's experiments are having on Zimmy; if they can correct that feature (somehow - I'll admit that it's a big if) it would ensure that there won't be more such incidents in the future.
To Mezzaphor: I checked Chapter Seventeen in my copy of "Gunnerkrigg Court: Research", and noticed that Smith also calls Reynardine "Renard" - and a "demon", to boot.

Also, made this side by side A good set. I probably should have pointed this out first, as it's important, but... Jack got REJECTED! He's very much the hurt young man rebuffed by a potential friend here, albeit at the same time also a seriously deranged, grievously possessed, and unquestionably dangerous young man. [...] Harsh, at least from his point of view, and his reaction is to impulsively blurt Befriending Annie by sticking her other pals into magical traps: does it remind you of anything? And, interestingly, it seems to be her declaration that Rey is her FRIEND that really throws him for a depressed, tall-building-leaping loop. That, or he just runs away from an awkward situation. Which seems to be a large part of his new modus operandi. He does not want to think about complications. Hmm, this may be a key to the whole Zimmy-out riddle: it's obnoxious ether-powered solipsism, ultimately turning out to be an attempt to run from oneself. The question now is, will Ether-Annie fly up there and drag him back down? She got a trap to undo. I'd like to see Rey tracking Jack as an ether-hound, though. The Old Sneaky Canine didn't anything cool for too long, it's about the right time. Either way, someone is persistently using Rey's old name because they don't believe that Rey has changed, and they still see him as an agent of the Forest. Hmm, a good point. I still think, incidentally, that when the Court officials show up, Annie should not only tell them the whole story about what happened to Jack, but also (actually, she'd have to, since it's integral to explaining Jack's plight) about the side-effects that the power station's experiments are having on Zimmy; if they can correct that feature It seems to be the base effect (ethereal pump). As to the boat team, it would make much more sense if she requested a communication with Anja Donlan ASAP. If they'll hear it, well, good for them.

I don't know how...but I feel that this arc may be one of the most important ones we've seen yet. I feel that Jack's little experiment will send out ripples, ripples that will become great waves in the future.

That's a gift of Tom's, methinks - to make you feel for the crazy-as-hell characters. (See Zimmy, Jeanne's ghost, Mort, even Diego until we realized what he was.)
I'm also of the impression that Jack's plan got a big hole shot in it by Annie, whose loyalty to Rey he should've seen coming. It's almost as if he's so obsessed with his objectives that everything else MUST fall in line, as far as his thinking is concerned. When things vary, or he gets thwarted, he gets a bit more desperate to reassert what he thinks is his control.
One ironic thing I've noticed, though: If he is Hyland's son, and Hyland has a thing against "freaky etherically-aligned people"....his son just went from normal techie to all-out-etherically-influenced crazy. If Jack comes out of this at least moderately sane, his dad's going to have a cow. A laser cow, at that.

I think that Annie is having a kind of dilemma. She followed Jack to make sure he wouldn't anything stupid and now she let him go alone to find Zimmy. What could happen if two powerful crazies meet? I think that Annie doesn't want this to occur without her supervision. And another thing came to my mind. Why would Zimmy want appear? She has already checked what's with the power station and it doesn't haz a flavor. Why would she want to try it again? I dunno.

Maybe he assumes that the power station's effect on Zimmy is similar to that of a lantern attracting bugs, i.e. that it will attract her even though she knows it won't do her any good.

Although this is a serious page, I still had to chuckle when Jack said "No you're crazy!". Spoken like a true crazy person. It made me laugh, too. But if you think about it, Jack is also right. Especially if you take the events in Chapter 3 at face value.

Also, made this side by side for the wiki. Nice! There's another good smiling Jack in #715 if it needs extending. Thanks! I'll keep it mind. It's actually one image per chapter that he's been in, but since he's basically in this entire chapter I may include it. ...Now THAT'S something. Showing a real progression, there. I know right! Just looking at the first one, and then the latest... Maybe he assumes that the power station's effect on Zimmy is similar to that of a lantern attracting bugs, i.e. that it will attract her even though she knows it won't do her any good. I actually don't really understand this either. I don't really think Zimmy's coming to check it out. Wonder how Jack'll react to that... Just wanted to make another note. When we first meet Jack he's by himself. Like, the other kids came in groups, but Jack's like... I dunno... like he's not tight enough with anyone to share this experience with others. Even though he seems to have general friends and seems to be popular enough that a bunch of random kids are like "Hey! That's Jack Hyland!" when he's being chased by Court Officials. It's just sorta seems to make it more clear that he might be lonelier than we thought, but it's only enhanced since his experience in Zimmingham. In fact this whole... crazoid personality we're seeing really is Jack, only more intense and without courtesy filters. Anyway, when Annie seems like the only one that could help, I guess he wanted to be like... real friends. I seriously doubt he realises how much of an ass he's coming off as.

Why Jack can fly:
If the video shows, you should see a spider behavior known as ballooning. This is when young spiders create parachutes with their web, and casting off into the wind. This helps spread their population further.
Now, normally, spiders can only do that when they're young, as they often die during the practice.
HOWEVER...
Some species of spiders are known to balloon as adults.
What does this mean?
Think about it.
Jack's spider weave a parachute over his head, then waits for an etheric current, which it has adapted Jack to see.
Then, if the current is strong enough, Jack jumps into it, and essentially, falls up.
Considering the amount of etheric energy being used by the Power Station, I'd say Jack's original plan was to use the currents generated by the station to float all the way to Chester(Zimmy's house) and question her.
Lastly, random thoughts: Who else thinks Jack is going to flee to the Forest?
Can Rey grow wings? If so, the end of this chapter could be EPIC.

Excellent post, ih8pkmn!
If that's what's going on, then it both puts a cap on Jack's powers and is way cooler than if he were simply flying. Jack sailing on etheric currents solves a lot of problems, including shutting up the people who are bitching about this coming out of left field.
It also makes sense that he needed to activate the power station to do it, since that's guaranteed to blow up some HUGE waves in the largely stagnant Court ether.
I think you nailed this one. Only wish I'd come up with it, if only to extend my streak of perfect predictions for this chapter. Haha.
I don't know about Jack fleeing to the forest, though. Or him using the ether currents to fly to Chester House. He couldn't access any information on them, remember? And I doubt anyone outside the faculty knows where they're located, since it's already been established that (outside of Zimmy) Chester doesn't mix with the rest of the student body.

That brings up an interesting question: What if Annie's powers are also magnified? Same for Reynardine's as well, once she gets him out of that trap.

So, if Jack can fly because some spiders can fly... Does that mean he can walk on water too? Most of them can do it, I've seen it.

Well, if his powers do work like a spider-silk parachute, I don't see any reason why can't jump from a high-up place and use it to slow his fall and land safely.

My theory is Jack's spider shot a thread up at the ceiling and dragged him to the window...
