does annie still have this? www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=482She has so much gear she carries around now. The antinomy symbol, the blinker stone, and the coyote tooth. (not to mention Reynardine, the lockpicks, and sometimes shadow 2) Most of these are used fairly often and are more or less basic equipment for a medium. But this... this seems almost random. It is never brought up again. Tom is a better righter than that. He generally doesn't put something like that in there if it isn't going to be used. albeit, it might just have been meant to portray Egger's concern. (although a simple, "be careful" would have done the same) My query is this: Will we see this again, and if so, what will its purpose be?

How did you find out no one was thinking about it?

What's with all the antagonism, guys?
This was actually an interesting thing to point out, as I'd say it's inevitable it'll be used. The real question is, how much danger does she need to be in to call upon outside aid?

I never stop thinking about it @_@
Tom has previously said that she still carries it with her, so it's entirely possible it will be used at some point.

What makes it double-interesting is now she has Coyote's tooth as well, so this item and the tooth could be perceived as a weapon of last resort and a shield of last resort. If backed into a corner, which would Annie rather risk?

For that reason, I've taken it for granted that the page you linked to is foreshadowing that simply has yet to be followed through on, and that the thing will get used. Sort of like the scene at the beginning of the old 007 films where M would give Bond a bunch of gadgets, tipping off the audience that every one of those gadgets would be used before the end of the film. Gunnerkrigg Court is just longer than a film.

But it could also be a "red herring", a device that is explicitely introduced with a good dose of exposition… and never appears again, just to trick the people who never forget about it and keep waiting for its suprise coming back which wouldn't be a surprise at all since they expect it.
Knowing Tom, this isn't entirely impossible.
Or perhaps that's just what he want us to think, and the surprise is that the object will actually end up being used when we were thinking it was not going to be!
Or perhaps…

With all of these mystical objects, I’m almost expecting her to get some magical bag to keep it all in, at some point. Like in a video game.

Well, she could also not use it. Intentionally. For example, if after being in desperate peril, there is a quiet panel of Annie taking the distress beacon and putting it in her drawer… well, that carries at least as much narrative weight as pulling the trigger. Or perhaps that's just what he want us to think, and the surprise is that the object will actually end up being used when we were thinking it was not going to be! Or perhaps… Never get involved in a land war in Asia.

If backed into a corner, which would Annie rather risk? eggers to the rescue isn't exactly a shield. Its just calling in the artillery. Nonetheless, a good point to bring up. Antinomy likes to solve things by herself, so my guess is that she would use the tooth first. (also, she might be breaking court rules when she is up against a wall.) The tooth is interesting as well... I don't want to derail this topic though.

The handful of times it's been brought up in Questions to Tom or on Formspring, I believe Tom's answer was that she takes it with her whenever she's going into the Forest only, not just carrying it around all the time.

One would assume, then, that Annie keeps it in or with her green suit, which I believe she has consistently worn during visits to the forest.

I think Tom said she keeps it in her desk drawer when not in the Forest.

When you think about it, Tom must be glad he has us to constently remind him of plot items he hasn't used yet; this way he's sure never to forget about them!

(considering that he never answers a question with "i haven't decided")

That's the problem with being "half serious" in print; without the tone of voice to accompany it, it might be mistaken for complete seriousness.

Rule of thumb: exclamation points means "not totally serious".

Rule of thumb: exclamation points means "not totally serious". UM, traditionally, exclamation points mean you are emphatically serious. Two points, on the other hand, means you are being satirically serious. More than that, following an apparently serious statement (i.e., not obvious satire) means you wear underpants on your head.

It's context-dependent, of course, but if there's no reason to be emphatic it's generally true that the person is being not totally serious. Especially on these forums; when people /are/ serious, they don't tend to use exclamation points and shout and stuff.

She also carries around scissors. At least when she's going out on the bridge to meet robot.
