Jones stated here that "chances are good" and " he's shown some progress" and she is about as independent a source as I can think of.Thanks for pointing that out; I'd forgotten those lines of hers. (I hope that the second book comes out soon so that I can consult the events in Chapters Fourteen to Twenty-two without having to check the archives on the Internet; I find looking things up in a book simpler. I hope that we won't go through the mess that happened with the first book's publication, too.)

I rather like how smooth Jones was. In a way this proves my thought that she's human. I always thought that she was human with some odd abilities, maybe a cyborg - which would certainly have an impact on her emotional makeup. The reason is, only a human would naturally be this savvy in a social situation with another human. A machine or even android, however good their programming is still going to wind up a touch awkward as they learn how to interact. Instead, she's like some people who've learned how to move smoothly in any interaction, but still show little or no sign of emotion. I think the reference that Jones can't use a blinker stone might be indicative enough: the forest works with magic, and a good number of etheric beings seem to be over there. This suggests one would have to be at least moderately psychic in some way or form, or have powers that influence the spirit world in some way, to serve as a medium. This would explain Smitty and Parley being with Annie in this mediation class. But it suggests that Jones can't really influence the forest creatures with any more than well-chosen words, along with some super-tough skin and kung-fu abilities should they get temperamental. I don't think that'd be terribly effective with a forest full of mystical creatures. She can teach how to mediate, how to use words, how to defend oneself, and how to sort things out - but she can't do or teach the psychic/intuitive side of mediation. So her use as a teacher and advisor are probably best because of this. I very much like both these theories, especially the second. And thinking of medium classes, I wonder if Anja was trained? She's got some serious abilities, as we've seen, and since those are necessary... Less seriously, Andrew looks pretty pleased that someone's praising him instead of going "Smitface ruined the sim!" Are you paying attention, Parley?

Come to think of it, Parley's tactlessness would almost eliminate her as a medium from the start. I guess that's just proof of the whole psychic powers make the medium thing, or is it Jones just expecting that she can get Parley to shape up before her powers surface?
I have to wonder if the girl's tactlessness would be softened by psychic awareness or not. Seems like a pretty big gamble, even if she turns out to have her father's precognitive abilities.

She may be human. I never doubted that, but she's sure as hell creepy.
I mean, how can anyone look at those flowers, the way he acts, or his tie and NOT smile? Not even once? Not even a teensy bit? CREEPY.

I dunno. The sixth panel almost looks like a smile. In a Jones-ish way.

I have to wonder if the girl's tactlessness would be softened by psychic awareness or not. Seems like a pretty big gamble, even if she turns out to have her father's precognitive abilities. Since the big reason for Parley being put in that class was the hope that being around other kids with etheric abilities would serve as a catalyst for her own psychic abilities to emerge, she might not be seriously considered for mediumship anyway. For all we know, she might decide to drop the class once her abilities finally develop, with a tone of "Don't need all those boring mediation lessons any more" - except she clearly enjoys bothering Smith too much for that to happen.

Do we have anything to indicate that that's the actual reason she's taking the classes?

Kids with extra-normal abilities suitable for mediation were placed in the class. I believe we already argued about how Parley's seeming personality "deficiency" may actually be a positive in some situations.
Jones is a tree.

I think a mad scientist like Dr Disaster is infatuated with Jones because she's a robot.

Do we have anything to indicate that that's the actual reason she's taking the classes? That was what I thought when I read Chapter Seventeen - but again, I may not be remembering all of it. Parley doesn't show much interest in mediation as yet; fencing matches, simulations, and pestering Smith seem to appeal to her far more.

She's so into it, she shoots lightning from her head! But it wouldn't surprise me if "some progress" is a euphemism for "welp, she hits people harder with swords than she used to".
