Maybe she was an exchange student? She'd still be around Surma and Co.'s age then, while still not being primarily educated at GC. That's the first entirely reasonable speculation about Jones i see in a long time...long, so much that it may be forever. This being Gunnerkrigg Court (remember: fairies, bedsheets ghosts, psychopomps, ancient gods...), it's probably false...i hope not, tho. It would be funny to see the "jones is certainly a robot" party reactions.

I'm wondering if Jones was just even more awkward to deal with than Anthony. We all know people mature and change a bit as they grow up. If Jones were these kids' age, then she may have been something of an annoy-a-tron back then.
If you look at her current behavior around people (including testing their character with key phrases), and transplant a more perhaps bull-headed, stubborn streak and some youthfulness...well no wonder people like Surma wouldn't be able to stand her.

Interesting. Loving this chapter so far, I'm a sucker for backstory. Of course, now I'm left wondering exactly what Jones' deal is even *more*, but I've gotten used to answers leading to more little questions. Keeps me interested at least, haha. Also, I'm a little amused by the fact that young Eglamore looks like me turned into a dude. Same hair style/color, facial structure, skin tone... Hahaha, I look like a guy.

On Monday we'll meet young Jones for the first time and she'll be all "HELLO!!! I like your face!!!" That's my prediction. (no it's not)

you know, we've all been asuming Anthony is a jerk. I'm starting to think he's a good kid, after all, only terribly misunderstood. we don't know why he dissapeared after Surma's death and left Annie alone - we assume it's because he's a neglecting father, but we don't know the real facts - we only heard things from mr. popular Eglamore (who dislikes him for obvious reasons) and from Jones (who was testing Annie's reaction). I think we will yet be very much surprised by his character.

We had to fall back on assumptions for a long time, but now we have this flashback to go on. And guess what? He was a jerk even when he was still a kid. we assume it's because he's a neglecting father, but we don't know the real facts - we only heard things from mr. popular Eglamore (who dislikes him for obvious reasons) and from Jones (who was testing Annie's reaction). We have just seen that James didn’t like him when they were still teenagers, so the breakup with Surma, years later, cannot have anything to do with that. Causality doesn’t work backwards. I agree that he may have been misunderstood. And still, have we seen anyone saying anything positive about Anthony? I don’t think so. Even Anja and Donald merely kept their neutrality, at least in front of Annie. And Annie? For some time she seriously entertained the thought he might have abandoned her because he wanted nothing more to do with her.

To be precise, Annie thought that she must have done something wrong that led to his abandoning her. Kat takes the more straightforward approach of seeing Anthony as a jerk.
Anthony looks younger than the other boys. Eglamore's features seem more like those of an adolescent than a child, but Anthony appears more pre-adolescent.

What if Eggie's training got in the way of his relationship with Surma and Anthony was there to fill in the gap? And Ms. Not-Jones somehow went missing. I think her absence will actually be important or something. maybe she's Dr. Disasters...something...

What if Eggie's training got in the way of his relationship with Surma and Anthony was there to fill in the gap? And wouldn’t it be ironic if Anthony, notorious for his vanishing acts, was available at a critical moment when James was not?

This discussion makes me think that Anthony was possibly the guy that Reynardine possessed to get Surma. On the other hand, we assume that every body Reynardine inhabits is killed, but hope springs eternal.

And wouldn’t it be ironic if Anthony, notorious for his vanishing acts, was available at a critical moment when James was not? That's plausable, actually. My guess is that Anthony ended up either being possessed and dying after, (But that's far too predictable for Tom.) or becoming a creature of the forest. Grief does drive people to do crazy things. Either that or he got in an unfortunate car accident, died, and has no mystery about his disappearance at all. Definitely that one.

Actually it couldn't have been the guy that Rey possessed because Tom stated that we don't know who he is right now, and we know for a fact that Anthony is alive and will re-appear within 2 years of where the story is at right now.

...or becoming a creature of the forest. Grief does drive people to do crazy things. I doubt it, considering that Anthony is devoid of emotion.

Where are you getting the impressing that preteen Tony was a jerk? His actions on today's page could just as easily be that of a socially awkward, introverted nerd. (Hmm, that sounds familiar...)

Extreme introvert? He doesn't necessarily want to show it. <,< Curse my inability to think of mad speculations that are so mad they cannot be refuted!

It was stated clearly at least twice in the comic (once by Eglamore in Chapter Three, once by Coyote in Chapter Twenty).

I'm still entertaining the idea that Anthony was there to fill in for James when he went out for "his training".

We've been told/shown that: 1) Jones was NOT a student at Gunnerkrigg. I would read this as excluding the possibility that she was an exchange student. 2) Eglamore and the Donlans - and the rest of the major adults - have known Jones since they were students at Gunnerkrigg. And while they referred to each other at that time by first names and even diminutives, she was already "Jones". 3) It would have been reasonable to include Jones in a picture taken on school picture day. That indicates that she has some sort of close affiliation with the school. 4) The relationship between Eglamore (approximately 6 foot 6) and Jones (approximately 5 foot 2, definitely a bit shorter than Parley) is such that *she* scritches *him* on the head, and he bends over to accommodate it. Relationships almost never form that way. Instead, the relationship was formed when he was at least a bit shorter than her - which, if they were school-age at the same time, would be some years before they were old enough to come to Gunnerkrigg Court. (Or never.) Jones is, I think, older than she looks. Not less than 10 years older than Eglamore: she was already in approximately her current (Annie's time) role when he first came to Gunnerkrigg Court as a student. Except more routinely involved with more students, and perhaps more sociable.

Other girl and Eglamore are brother and sister, Jones is also a realitive. this is my theory.

I think were missing something monumental here that just happened: Anthony just spoke, for the first time ever in the comic! I know! *squee* Getting a brief glimpse into his personality is interesting. It makes me wonder just what his relationship with Annie is really like- going on this and everything that's been said about him I really can't imagine him having a affectionate bone in his body (which also makes me wonder, again, how in God's name him and Surma ever got together). Also, note that we're seeing him leaving his friends (friend?) to go do mysterious stuff on his own. I see a trend developing. Now I really want to know more about this guy

Now I really want to know more about this guy That's what he wants. >.> <.< Though Tom is doing very well with these flashbacks already. How he slowly and subtly introduces concepts that clash lightly with previous knowledge is very skilled and deft. Also, it's incredible how he can deal with us, and write intelligent, creative scripts while we while away hours on here trying to guess what he's going to do. And how he can tell us little bits of information of things we want to know *coughjonesandnotjonesandanthonycough* while still not telling us. Giving us just enough to keep us madly interested on the verge of obsession, but not enough to make us satisfied. Every single time, he makes sure that at least one of the characters in the story knows what is going on WHILE WE DON'T. GAAHHH. Tom will drive us all mad with his deft leading-on skills.

Everyone seems to assume that Anthony is a jerk from what we know. But we know practically nothing about him. I figure he can't be all that bad a guy if he's been friends with Eglamore, Surma, and the Donlan's for their whole lives.

I found one strong piece of evidence that Anthony was *not* the young man whom Reynardine possessed.
In the flashback of Reynardine possessing the young man in Chapter Twenty, his victim has dark hair. Anthony has light brown hair, not only as a boy, but also in the glimpse of him as a grown-up surgeon in Chapter Two.

And that supposedly Annie is going to see him again in a yearish. Though you're right, I never noticed that before. I've never thought Anthony was a jerk. He just has other matters to attend to. Or maybe Tom'll go all Harry Potter with the "Ohmygoodnesssnapeisactuallycoolandjamesisajerk!".

I figure he can't be all that bad a guy if he's been friends with Eglamore, Surma, and the Donlan's for their whole lives. But is that true? Anthony wasn’t very popular with Eglamore, and the Donlans merely kept a neutral stance – at least when Annie was within earshot. I am not aware of any positive characterisation of Anthony within the comic so far. Now we haven’t seen much of him at all and Eglamore’s and Jones’ descriptions may be misleading, but that is all we have.

Haven't all of the comments just been that he's emotionally detached? And I'm sure the only reason they dislike him (past him being kind of odd) is out of the spite of his leaving.

I think I would take the more open stance: that jerkiness does not interfere with your number of friendships (especially in a closed community like GC). I think Anthony is a jerk (though, to be honest, I would not accept any excuse short of global catastrophe to interfere with one's parenting).

Haven't all of the comments just been that he's emotionally detached? And I'm sure the only reason they dislike him (past him being kind of odd) is out of the spite of his leaving. As another introvert (like Annie and apparently Anthony), I have a couple things to say... First, being around five highly social friends in an unstructured situation is not easy for an introvert. It isn't necessarily fun being in the midst of group interactions even with a lot of structure. And what the introvert really needs to recover from that stress is time *alone*. Second, introverts value close friends as much as extroverts do, perhaps even more. But they don't have, they couldn't tolerate, nearly so many close friends, and they show their friendship differently. The typical extrovert might not even realize an introvert cares about him until there's something really troubling him and the introvert is the only one who can be bothered to help.
