Some friends and I have started an IRC chat. As the subject may lead you to believe, it is not endorsed by Tom or anything. I searched the forums first and didn't see anything, so let me know if we're not the first... New to IRC? Just click this link: sn.im/gunnerkrigg-chatAlready use IRC? Server: irc.villageirc.net Channel: #gunnerkrigg To address a common point of confusion: you may find that no-one is talking when you first join. Many of us leave the window open all day and talk when we feel like it. If you introduce a topic of discussion, those who are not AFK are likely to respond. Edit: A separate IRC program or plugin isn't necessary if you use the link above, but some people prefer it. Here are some options: - Windows: mIRC (shareware), X-Chat (free) - Mac: Colloquy (free), Linkinus (shareware) - Linux (Ubuntu etc.): look for the 'Add/Remove Programs' option and search for 'xchat' - Misc.: some instant message programs such as Pidgin also support IRC; Firefox has the Chatzilla addon Edit 2: improved web chat settings |

That's a great addition, the best since robot bread-slicers! I fully support this initiative. Also, imagine how our Wild Speculation will flourish. Thank you. I'll add new ideas for this as soon as i have some.
EDIT: If Tom supports this idea, i think it would be great to give him channel Founder or co-founder status, for obvious reasons.

i'll confess i was a bit wary of this idea at first... but when posters whose posts I appreciate tell me it's good, how could I not check it out ?
my worst fear was that it would be like a live-action series of the kind of comments at the bottom of the new page (think of the ant debate and you'll realise why i was hesitant, won't you ? )

villageirc is giving me problems, it does not let me connect saying my IP is some sort of proxy or something...
If someone is having problems like this, please report.

Agasa (or anyone else), if you receive such a connection error again, please copy and paste the exact error message, either here or to my e-mail (aero@aeroleviathan.com) and I will talk with the network operators to see if we can figure it out.

It's kind of funny, I'm a big IRC user and I didn't even think of a GKC IRC channel. Anyways, I tried coming but I can't seem to connect to villageirc.....it just times out. Maybe the port isn't 6667?
edit: I was able to connect by connecting directly to the server rather than irc.villageirc.net: Loopy.NJ.US.VillageIRC.net

I think the IRC action has mostly moved to group IM/chat apps like Skype and Discord these days, hasn't it?

There's technically still the channel on Quakenet, but yeah virtually all activity has gone to the Discord server.
