There is the possibility that John, being a Student at Gunnerkrigg, wrote a piece of music (probably for Margo) and performed something original. A man with a guitar and a smooth instrumental can say a lot more than can be done with lyrics. I say it was an original piece, and its beauty and soulful nature moved Margo to make her Masterpiece on the wall. After kissing his brains out, anyways.

I mean, the song had to have _some_ duration, and 5:54 is just funnier than saying "six minutes later." It is also possible that Tom wanted to give us something to chase our tails over.

I agree, he's probably laughing at us right now. I love this webcomic! I will be pondering over this for days.

I had a weird dream last night. Tom posted what song it was that Sullivan's John played, and it was some crappy soft-rock song. (I don't remember the name or even if the song really exists, but the fact that it was crappy soft-rock stood out to me in the dream.)
Clearly my subconscious is even more messed up than I previously thought.

I agree, he's probably laughing at us right now. I hope he's laughing. Then again, I also hope he appreciates that people are this attentive to his work. I do hope he's laughing, though because sometimes there's a level of analysis that borders on insane.

Bruteforcing is useless, but here is a list just because.

Of course, live versions of songs usually run shorter or longer than the recorded versions...unless Sully is JUST THAT GOOD.

This is a more finicky search, for song duration as well as the instrument. It gave 35 results, which you are encouraged to peruse. I am afraid it may have been too narrow though; he could have played a song that was not originally performed on the same instrument.

Sully and Margo are just so cute. They need a whole mini series to themselves, just being a cute couple in various ways - going for a walk, watching the TV together, playing with their kids. It would be a best seller!
I in my entire iTunes collection I have only 2 songs of the approximate time: Voodoo Child - Rogue Traders theme tune, not the Hendrix one. Different - Pendulum. Somehow I doubt either of those would get such a reaction.
There's also Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay at 5:51 but that's even less likely.

The only song in my library with this length is "Start the Commotion" by the Wiseguys.
I'd be pretty blown away if some played this too:

the only song I have with 5:54 is True Faith by New Order. I bet that's it.

Hair mussed from making out, or thrown by the winds of speedy retreat? Originally, I thought it was wind, but now I'm not entirely sure.
I have always thought that she was completely awed, and still don't think she was angered in any way. Witness how she painted his immortal likeness onto school property.
I figured she left out of a combination of embarassment at the strength of her own reaction, and the sheer inspiration to go out and exalt his sexiness with her own form of art.
And yet, 21 years later, she's dreaming of him, which suggests that she doesn't actually HAVE him. Which suggests that she was so embarassed by the strength of her reaction that she never actually followed up on it.
How sad.

I somehow missed most of this thread when I was reading it, including the ring being pointed out. How did that happen?
Happy Ending!
Though it seems he may be dead by then. Note the tears running down her cheeks. But hey, they had their time together, and we all will die eventually.

One doesn't have to die to have good memories... I think she's just thinking back to it as the start of everything, and remembering it fondly with tears of joy. Sullivan's John and Margo meet up and smile for each other at the Power station, in that schoolkid crush kind of way that they know they like each other, they just don't know what to do next. Perhaps she's rethinking the event that gave her such a happy life... That if she hadn't been so eager to hear a song that day, who knows what would have happened. We could all be wrong... But I think it's fairly obvious that John and Margo wind up together, and, at the very least, Happy for a while.

She could have married someone else and is dreaming of him that day and crying because he was the one that got away...
Of course I'd much rather think that they ended up together and she is crying tears of happiness at the wonderful sparkly rainbow life they now live together painting and singing songs!
