Are we going to see some fine & unique machinery smashed to bits? Would be fun. Last page I honestly thought they would just leave it where it is and operate from there. These guys really don't seem to realize much what kind of "entities" live in the forest, what views they hold and what they are capable of.

The ignorance is defensive.

Also, I like how Shell is drawn in panel 4. Looks a bit younger than usual... trying to put on a stone face but ending up looking like a pouty girl. Kind of naive, too, conferring with the big ones before every single word. I think she's playing rough but shows a more human side when caught off guard. Maybe she just wound up with the wrong guys. I wouldn't mean her harm. Aata, on the other side... aargh. Actually, I wouldn't mean harm to anyone, but even thinking of the man just makes my blood boil.

Should not Annie mention something about the fact that while Loup promised to not hurt her, he didn't mention a thing about other people?

Don't worry about them, Annie. They're just jealous. (also: earlier question about Juliet has been answered.)

Readings... Sounds legit.
Actually, I do believe them that this is exactly what the contraption is for. Likely Etheric readings. Scan Loup so thoroughly his power crumbles because everything is recorded, explained and de-mystified, and when explained by science, a God is a God no more.

In Star Trek, there was a race of aliens that tried to alter the environment of the universe's space/time to suit their habitability needs, at the cost of pretty much all other life in the universe.
If Gunnerkrigg Court sets up some kind of "etheric field" using generator devices, then theoretically it could be like the anti magic fields of Dungeons & Dragons.
If successful, then Loup could have his power suppressed like when Rita Repulsa used the Green Candle to siphon off the Green Ranger's powers.

if it was why didn't they have that excuse ready I think they didn't consider anyone actually asking about that. If they didn't completely discount Annie or anyone else asking about it, they would have a plausible excuse ready no matter what its real purpose is.

Does the Court know this? They weren't present when Coyote explained his secret to Annie, and may not have, despite all their studies, made the connection yet between the ether and human belief.

Wow, they discussed the question so much on panel 6, that when they answer in panel 7, Annie's hair reflects the sun no more

I had them tagged in the Index as the same person until over the weekend when I took a look back to Shell’s first appearances. I had thought Shell had just grown out their hair, but the face shape is different too.

So, in today's first frame there's a lot of information. Annie has asked Juliette off-camera whether she knows anything about what the Shadow Men are planning to do concerning the lake water. It appears that she didn't know, not being part of that project. This also means that Juliette and Arthur are both still likely in the Court; they haven't left yet, as Juliette's flashback is pictured speaking to Annie, rather than talking on a phone (or typing an email, etc.). The Shadow Men are carrying their apparatus toward the Court-Forest interface, which takes two of them, so it's fairly heavy. Annie watches this with suspicion in her eyes.
She then approaches them and asks what it's for, something we all want to know too. We get a closer look at it; it definitely looks like some kind of machine or device. It has those multi-tiered antennas in a couple of places.
Apparently the Shadow Men have to huddle before deciding how to respond. The response: "Readings," from a stone-faced Shell (whose hair has grown). Does this mean they've been told to keep their interaction with Annie to a minimum?
Annie informs them that they "won't be able to take any machinery into the Forest." What does she mean? Is she going to stop them (unlikely)? Or does she just know from experience that Loup won't allow it (more likely)? Yeah, my guess is that if they tried, Loup would just blow it to bits, toss it back out again, or turn it into a fern.
They huddle again to decide how to respond as Annie waits, arms akimbo, and this time Shell responds, "Fine." I think this is probably played for laughs – they had to huddle to decide to say that?
Anyway, last time James said to get going, so apparently this is part of getting going – moving the Readings Thing closer.

Does the Court know this? They weren't present when Coyote explained his secret to Annie, and may not have, despite all their studies, made the connection yet between the ether and human belief. They might not have made this connection, but I am sure the Court operates under the belief that "magic is just something that hasn't been explained yet scientifically", and now they are going to analyze and explain as much as possible. Knowledge is power.
They huddle again to decide how to respond as Annie waits, arms akimbo, and this time Shell responds, "Fine." I think this is probably played for laughs – they had to huddle to decide to say that? I didn't see it like this. Annie reminds them that technology is not welcome in the Forest, and now they discuss whether they should try to bring their contraption with them anyway, whether it can fulfil its function if they leave it here, if they are going to grant Annie the satisfaction of following her smart-alec advice etc.

Should not Annie mention something about the fact that while Loup promised to not hurt her, he didn't mention a thing about other people? Part of me thinks this should go without saying. Coyote was largely antagonistic when it came to the court. Loup's downright hostile.
They want to shake science sticks at the angry canine chaos god? Sounds like a bad idea on the face of it. I don't know what, if any kind of protections the Shadow Men could hope to have/expect against him, but... well, they're confident/stupid enough to be going through with this.
Either way, it should be revealing.

Interpretation #1: These are, again, straight-edge kids about to get weird for the first time. They're scared. They're trying to cope with their fear by being really DEFINITE and IN CONTROL about everything. Once they get into the Ether they will...probably not be able to be DEFINITE and IN CONTROL. At that time, expect tears, laughter and spontaneous religious conversions. Interpretation #2: These are all older House Foley kids. Awkward as anything on the outside, 1337 etheric hackers on the inside. Loup's about to see what the local fellas who made good can do. They want to shake science sticks at the angry canine chaos god? Sounds like a bad idea on the face of it. Eh. If Loup was genuinely, murderously, angry, someone would have died by now. Loup's young. He's frustrated some times, but not really angry. And unless their science sticks seriously hurt, he'll probably view all this as an amusing and invigorating challenge. Remember, all gods are really good at self-inhibition. They must be; I've never met one.

Either turned it uncomfortably alive (dead Tic-Toc), or turned it uncomfortably old (Robot). What's next? *edit* there are no villains in this comic. This is the Shadow Men's plan to let the fugitive robot souls escape into the Forest via orgone generator. Drama incoming when they can't find Arthur. Calling it!

Annie is actually acting as a representative of the Forest here. Good to see it.
(Note: anyone could have given them a friendly reminder of that rule. She's giving them an annoyed reminder. Check her stance in the last two panels.)
I bet she'll be watching etherically to see if that gang actually follows her reminder.
Also, I like what she's done with her hair. Somehow it makes her look a bit more authoritative.

Interesting. Got a link for that? Of course. Here are several questions from back then where Tom confirmed that yes, Shell is a woman, she cuts her hair short for practical reasons, and her real name is Michelle. And some more, including some completely unrelated questions about Ghost in the Shell.
