For some reason Renard doesn't think that having a telepathic link to and being at the beck and call of two teenagers isn't a living hell. [edit] Maybe he still wants to punish himself, or maybe the toy body is making it easier... or maybe the reality hasn't set in yet. [/edit]

I'd be kind of wary about going through the "this can't be happening, this has to be an Ayilu-like or Dr.Disaster-like illusion" theory again, seeing how well it worked last time; but I must admit that the whole "we were together and suddenly we're not" and Renard sensing the Annies nearby without seeing anyone does sound like one of those illusions. If that's the case, and they are actually side by side ... maybe sir Eggsalot should consider *not* cutting around with his sword. Did Parley and Renard just start walking in some random direction, right after they managed to communicate with two other groups and check directions? If that's the case, whoever is trying to split them up must be pretty relieved.

I can almost see the six of them laying side by side in a hive, surrounded by hundreds of wisps using their powers to keep our heroes in this dream world.

[/edit] Uh, no, he was at Annie's beck and call before; now as a familiar he is not bound to follow her orders any more. Well, IF it is an illusion, I trust Tom not to wait until the end of the chapter to reveal it. I think it worked well in "Jeanne". It appears that way, at least they are in a different place than where Parly fought the gurdig.

It might also be that they are in different dimensions/spacetime shards. Not far away physically, but separated by reality.
Maybe they need to be split up to their own dimension, and bring a fragment each from there to this reality?

So is the tree an illusion or the absence of the tree an illusion?

He's not bound to follow Antimonies' orders like an inanimate object anymore but he remains under their control as a familiar. The main difference so far is the mental link/party line.

Can't help thinking that the answer is moving right over their heads

So they have a way to compare results, but don't? Still trusting their data too much.

We know, and they know, that wisps are involved. And that wisps can "play with our minds." We also know that the party was split up into several smaller groups rather suddenly. "Who knows how long we've been led astray." (My emphasis.) Between all of those clues, that's a rather large gun that Chekhov seems to have left just laying around. I would be surprised if there isn't at least one illusion being used against them. The illusion of distance, perhaps? The illusion of separation? I would not be surprised if the compasses are as useless as the radios.
