Reverse engineering a programming language is hard; sometimes you don't even know what you're doing.

This can't be more than the second or third time we've seen on-panel that Kat has made a mistake.

Most important thing in today's comic: "new creature" confirmed.

This can't be more than the second or third time we've seen on-panel that Kat has made a mistake. Yeah, Kat is really good at subverting the usual expectation of a sci-fi genius making a mistake. In her defense, there's a lot of etheric craziness that she couldn't have accounted for. On the bright side, Saslamel seems to have an idea of what's going on since he correctly deduced that Kat did something using the Arrow.

In her defense, there's a lot of etheric craziness that she couldn't have accounted for. On the bright side, Saslamel seems to have an idea of what's going on since he correctly deduced that Kat did something using the Arrow. There's several layers of that. Diego's arrow was designed for a specific one-use purpose but actually had to function in at least three modes, safe (in proximity to nearby conspirators before firing and in direct contact with Steadman as he shot it), hitting the target and producing the main effect, and then at rest keeping the artificially-created haunting situation stable; Kat probably understands parts of the hardware very well and is pretty sure she knows how the rest operates (else she wouldn't be using it) but something that looks straightforward can have more than one use. Also I'd guess Diego tweaked some clumps of his standard code at a level that Kat wouldn't normally need to bother checking, while leaving the bulk of it boringly standard.

hmmm. Kat used the arrow in a process to map the etheric exchange of ownership of Rey from herself back to Annie - to copy the etheric "program" of how to do that. That's what she thought was happening anyway... Now she was trying to use the same "program" to transfer the Court's control of Arthur to himself. But the etheric "program" is only valid for a single object - ownership of Rey. It cant be reused in the abstract between any two things. So instead of shifting control of Arthur to himself, the attempted reuse of the progrem here (I think!) was about to default back to Rey and switch control of him to the "new creature" Arthur. Oops!
This might mean Arthur will be stuck staying under Court control, unless Kat can figure a work-around....

This is why it's important to correctly define your pointers. If there's one thing to appreciate about the etheric world, its error logging is...verbose.

I threw this in wildspec too but.. Pointers. Arrow.
That's how it breaks the ether.
The thing is basically the physical embodiment of GOTO.

I quite enjoy how helpful and competent both the Arbiter and Clippy seem to be so far. None of this "we are the authorities and you are going to jail for this" schtick, they'll probably just help Kat hash out a proper, foolproof contract (whatever the intended effect actually is) and that will be that. Although perhaps there are some administrative fees or a minor fine of an unknown nature to be paid, we'll see. The thing is basically the physical embodiment of GOTO. Ah, so that's why the conspirators conspired to hide all evidence of this and never speak of it again. They were ashamed of themselves. Makes perfect sense.

Yeah, I'm also happily surprised they're all like "woops, you made a slip-up, this is what you're trying to do, that can't be right!". I'm just afraid the other shoe is still going to drop when they explain WHAT it is they want, and the arbiter just says "REQUEST DENIED, oh and btw, you know that entire persona you were trying to transfer? It's stuck in limbo now forever."
Then again, that would be WAY ooc for Tom to pull on us, me thinks...

Firstly: cookie party! Secondly: I'm very amused by the level of programming knowledge of this board. And Thirdly: Although perhaps there are some administrative fees or a minor fine of an unknown nature to be paid, we'll see. I hereby predict that in order to grant the new creature "free will" Kat will have to waive her humanity and accept her divinity. You can probably "create" life, mind, personality, individuality, "make them flesh" and whatnot but the last step for a full fledged creature is free will, and you can only create full fledged beings if you're a registered Divine Being™ at the Godly Union. Now here's something I'd very much like to ask Tom: - Do all the gods in the Gunnerverse know they're inside a webcomic or just some of them? I know Coyote does and aside from maybe Loup he's the only known god so far

Secondly: lots of nerds of various types here... the richness and multi-layered complexity of GC attracts nerdy analysis like bears to honey! Thirdly: she may not have to waive her humanity, but accepting her share of divinity makes sense. It would continue the nice parallelism of Annie and Kat's evolution - Annie had to accept her psychopomp role, and now Kat may have to accept her godhood - both regretfully.

So... does that mean that everyone who called that the transfer process would go off without a hitch and got cookies for it... now have to return their cookies...? Maybe we can avoid the whole "what if I ate them already?" line of questions by just saying these people now have to bake some new cookies to put back in the cookie pool...

And Thirdly: I hereby predict that in order to grant the new creature "free will" Kat will have to waive her humanity and accept her divinity. Thirdly: she may not have to waive her humanity, but accepting her share of divinity makes sense. It would continue the nice parallelism of Annie and Kat's evolution - Annie had to accept her psychopomp role, and now Kat may have to accept her godhood - both regretfully. This is reminding me of a D&D campaign, where the characters at the end of the campaign are basically destined to ascend to godhood in some way. But it still feels like we're at level 17 or so and not 20 quite yet, so I don't know that she'll just be given godhood so soon. That's not to say this won't be a precursor to godhood. Secondly: I'm very amused by the level of programming knowledge of this board. Secondly: lots of nerds of various types here... the richness and multi-layered complexity of GC attracts nerdy analysis like bears to honey! Hi, I'm adding D&D to the nerd pile today.
