It's a sad commentary on their father/daughter relationship that Court!Annie feels that living with Anthony is something to brag about.

Agreed. We've seen the chin depicted as pointy now and then in profile but here in image #3 (from the last panel of today's comic) we see the slightly upraised chin, eyes closed or nearly closed (one might call them slitted) and the lightly arched eyebrows.

Well then. I stopped reading for a few months, and now, the protagonist has been replaced off-screen, everyone is suspicious of them and not AT ALL suspicious of the Annie who suddenly has no issue living with her father, and their replacement has clearly been taking lessons in passive-aggression from Anthony. We missed a ton of possible character development from Annie, and for what?
This feels a lot like the Superior Spider-Man: Doc Ock replaced Spidey for a couple of years, and nobody really noticed or cared that Spidey had become more brutal. So from now on, I think I'm going to refer to Court!Annie as either the Inferior Antimony Carver, or Anti-Annie. Because this is starting to feel a lot like Superior Spidey, and not in a good way.
Hopefully Zimmy will show up and be able to point to the real Annie, and give everyone present a "What the actual hell do you think you're doing to her?" speech.

Kat got her own place? No more "all houses sleep together"? I feel like that particular policy has become a bit more difficult with the whole... "we're refugees within our own borders" thing. Also, Kat is probably high profile enough to warrant some privileges.

"Since everyone was pushed back into coast"? Does that mean the Court and the Forest are on an island? Yes Just kidding. As far as I understand, the coast is the only part of the court that is not bordering the forest.

It would be a huge load of trouble, but still preferable to living next to a forest housing an insane physical god. Unless they have to be next to the forest for some reason.

I suspect that's probably the case - that the Court's experiments can only work in the vicinity of Gilltie Wood (or some similar etheric location which wuld probably have similar residents. And the Court leadership, confronted with a choice between living somewhere safe and not getting to perform those experiments, or continuing the experiments and living in constant danger from the Forest, will automatically choose the latter. (There may also be a matter of pride - Loup might be a god, but he's a god in the form of a talking animal, and the Court might find it humiliating to let an animal triumph over them.)

I did not read it as "bragging", more an attack, making clear who is the real Annie here. It can be both an attack and a boast. Court!Annie is asserting that she has a better relationship with her father than Forest@Annie regardless if Forest!Anne is real. She's scored points off Forest!Annie on that basis before. And there's probably a bit of a warning in there too.

I think there's another side to it too: The founders of the Court either fled or "left" human society behind them. What would change their descendant's minds enough to return?

I think there's another side to it too: The founders of the Court either fled or "left" human society behind them. What would change their descendant's minds enough to return? Given that it's been generations since the Court was founded, I think it unlikely that the trouble they were fleeing from (if they really were fleeing trouble - it seems so convenient that these scholars and researchers just happened to settle in the vicinity of the Bismuth Seed that I think it more likely they were running towards something than away from it) would still be going on. (Not to mention that it'd have to be some serious trouble that beings like Coyote, Ysengrin, and Loup for neighbors would seem preferable.) And they can't have completely cut themselves off from human society, given such cases as their recruiting students from outside like Paz - plus the chapter about Mort's backstory mentioned they were helping with the war effort.

i had instant dislike of Court!Annie on this page, but...i get it. She FINALLY got at least some of the bonding with her father that she's always wanted all her life and Forest!Annie waltzes in and threatens to nullify it. she's kind of in survival mode now, so i understand why she's being catty.

The focus seems to be all on Court Annie and her attitude, and that's perfectly understandable, but what pierces my heart even more is the way Kat says "My mom and dad are just down there" instead of "Mom and dad are just down there", almost like she's introducing their presence not to Annie but to a completely new person.

EDIT: I realized why this didn't make sense. Onto other theories!
To make this post relevant to the current strip, do both Annie's have a necklace? I just realized that Court!Annie's pendant is hidden (foreshadowing of something probably, Tom) and we can't see Forest!Annie's at all. Did she even wear it into the forest?

I'm most suspicious about the Court's Annie because this kind of behavior (from everyone at the Court but all primarily due to her existence) is exactly what's needed to force our POV Annie out of the Court permanently. It just lines up with Loup's goals too well.

There is something that feels off about seeing that side view of Court!Annie. Also I just noticed that Annie during the chapter before she went to the Forest, chapter 67, wasn't wearing makeup at all and that Court!Annie is wearing makeup. This is very curious since the makeup represents a mask for her, especially when combined with how Court!Annie a) didn't know Ysingrin was dead or Loup's name, which shows she was not part of the Astral conversation at all with Loup since that was said the first couple of pages and b) how she's being very passive aggressive in a way that makes me think of the flame when Annie was using her blinker stone to separate it from herself. It makes me wonder if something happened to the part of the fire that Annie cut off of herself previously. In Chapter 54: Page 17 when she rebinds with her fire, her hair shows as short in the ether. I don't remember a panel that shows what occurs with the portions that was floating outside of the cut halo. Maybe it was put into a totem.

Uh, what? They pushed back to the coast and just decided to build, grow, or magically generate a bunch of two-hundred-year-old houses?

The seed Bismuth grows buildings whether they are needed or not (and they look suspiciously similar to existing British buildings). Usually most buildings are empty, but now that everybody moved to the coast, you actually can see people in the streets. For the first time in ages, people live close to eachother. Thus: settlements, but in existing buildings. [/spec]

In which the real bone of contention is explicitly named. Because the entire problem is that they have to compete for his attention. If Anthony wasn't at the Court at this time, the two Annies would have happily teamed up to drive everyone else crazy. I wonder what conclusions the "second" Annie will make from observing herself acting this way. I'm most suspicious about the Court's Annie because this kind of behavior (from everyone at the Court but all primarily due to her existence) is exactly what's needed to force our POV Annie out of the Court permanently. It just lines up with Loup's goals too well. ...And whether the whole point of duplicating her was to reduce her attachment to Anthony (and everyone else left at the Court), yes. Coyote had a good idea of what makes her tick.
