What's that you say, Court!Annie didn't look sufficiently poised and ubercompetent as she fired that laser last comic? When a problem comes along, she can whip it. Whip it good.

I would guess that Annie is at least an 11th level Elemental Soul Sorcerer at this point, since she's been personally trained by a god for more than a year.

I think this is a good moment for Shadow and Robot to show up so we see that they're alright and not plotting with the invading shadow men or the defending robots. Right? RIGHT???

That translucent pad Kat is using in the last panel is intriguing. I wonder if it's Court-issue or her computer project has been progressing as well as the hand did.

On further reflection, Court!Annie did way more damage to that Bound Dog than was necessary to disable it. If these have attacked before she should know that what she did last comic should have been enough, so perhaps she's feeling a little annoyed because Forest!Annie showed up and called her a fake. Speaking of Forest!Annie, she's visible again. She's Captain Obvious-ing, but at least she's doing something. [Compare and contrast panels #1 and #4 to see which Annie's mental state is what. ] Her hair are firing up. Is that how she keeps it short? My guess is that she has it cut to that length because she wants to keep the same hairstyle she had when she lived with her father before he left as a sign of... ...I'll call it continuity of that father/daughter relationship. That translucent pad Kat is using in the last panel is intriguing. I wonder if it's Court-issue or her computer project has been progressing as well as the hand did. Either way it should be linked to her computer. What I'm wondering about is why there are two things highlighted in red on her screen. Is it the two Shadow Men, or is it showing the positions of Anthony and Kat? Assuming that it's the Shadow Men, she's probably about to bind them.

Perhaps it is a wrist worn popup, and the touchscreen is purplish because it uses an adaptation of Anja's shield program to create a solid 'hard light' surface.

It might be that Anja and Kat collaborated so that Kat can etherically connect to her computers - an extension of the ether-tech Anja uses with her own computer. Or yeah, maybe its just a local pop-up device. Either way, it looks like Kat is tracking the locations of the shadow men (red circles) as they slip out of the train. Or one of those circles is all of them, and the other is the shadow dudes.... something like that.

She seems really used to it and looks like Kat is logging the incident like some bureaucratic routine, they don't seem nearly as shocked as Forest Annie is. Seems like this is a normal day in the yellow zone. Also, did she know that Bound Dogs were run by shadow men? I thought just the Old Gunnerkrigg Troupeâ„¢ (Surma, Anja, etc) did so it's not abnormal of her to be pointing it out PS: I find it weird that cut up parts in the wood aren't all scorched, it's like Annie used her fire in a knife way and just separated the molecules without burning them instead of a plasma/laser cutting way that would leave it all black. Since it looked like she cut it so fast I would expect it to be a mix of still cooling red ember with black near the borders

When a problem comes along, she can whip it. Whip it good. Now, that's going to be stuck in my head all day. Luckily, my mouse has a cord. The red dots, on Kat's pad, could merely be rail issues the Root Dog caused. She could be clearing and/or lasering them, to start the train again. I'm not sure what would be gained by tracking the shadow invaders, unless we're about to see Eggs and Parley hack'n'slash.

This is the coolest buzzword for modern businessmen, you gotta track everything just for the sake of tracking everything and having it beautifully drawn in a flashy dashboard with material design and lotsa whoosh going on them

I'm not sure what would be gained by tracking the shadow invaders, unless we're about to see Eggs and Parley hack'n'slash. Well, some of the shadow men have the ability to possess and take over court robots. Do that to enough of the robots maintaining the Spang bubble-shield and they could bring it down. Take over enough of the green-crabbed robots and the court would be seriously handicapped (no more slave labor!). So it would be good idea to track any loose shadow men ... and it does seem like the shadow man in panel 4 is one of the "evil" kind, with the "mean eyes", like the one what possessed the original S13 version off Robot, eg www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=117

Court Annie's face in the top panel reminds me of Annie's face on the bottom-left in this Torn Sea chapter page. Kat though... strikes me as sort of depressed. Her facial expressions are all so neutral. Except when she gets praised for her research, she's pretty I hope Paz is okay. (If this is still the same Kat).

So far we've met random dudes, a weird feminine and seemingly depressed Kat, an even weirder version of Annie that apparently managed to master robot arm surgery in less than 6 months, a regular Tony (and not the broken man whose social skills are inversely proportional to the number of people in the room, the one we're used to), greencrabbed robots... If we meet someone Annie did not possibly mention to Coyote I'll dismiss the simulation theory but until then I'll hang here over the fence Side note - Possible inspirations for the made up versions: 1) Random security dudes: it's the Court; 2) Feminine, seemingly depressed Kat: the bird guy that almost became her boyfriend, he might be a depressed bird that Coyote might have talked to; 3) Better Annie: what PurrElise said; 4) Dad of the year Tony: Coyote didn't know the extent of his personality + what PurrElise said 5) Greencrabbed robots: it's the Court².

According to Tom's text below the page, Annie "mainly helped holding things". No one says she did any actual surgery. Regarding Tony, I always understood this page as well as this one as Coyote having understood Tony pretty well...

Maybe to crush her spirit and make her believe she can never be happy in the Court so she'll come running back to him? Though that raises the question of how he'd get the bone and water in that case - they wouldn't be the genuine articles in a simulation, and if Annie decides not to go back to the "real Court", she can't retrieve them. (Not to mention that the simulation would delay Annie fetching them anyway - and Loup stated that he wasn't in a patient mood about them.) Unless he was lying about needing the bone and water in order to trick Annie into going back to the "Court" - though that doesn't seem enough of a role for them.

Given the pacing here, I just assumed that Kat was activating some program on her new (or rather, six months old) computer to detain (or possibly destroy) the Shadow men, sort of like how Anja's computer could bind Renard. I guess she could just be tracking them or checking up on the problems with the rails, but the way the page is set up really makes it look like this is a continuation of the fight, not the end of it.
Until I looked at the thread, though, I totally failed to notice that the screen she was using is translucent, like a hologram she projects with the computer. Thanks!

Sure, we've seen them a couple times before, but that was always in flashbacks. So it's obvious to us, but it's likely new information to her. And relatedly, it's probable that Court!Annie doesn't know she can take them out with less force (or, more likely, she doesn't care).

And relatedly, it's probable that Court!Annie doesn't know she can take them out with less force (or, more likely, she doesn't care). Antimony hasn't been shown in the comic looking at an operational Bound Dog until this chapter. It's been asked on Formspring how much Antimony knows about the events of Ch.22 and the responses have been " not very" and " She [Anja] talks about her time at Gunnerkrigg sometimes, about as much as any other parent might. She doesn't divulge all details, though" so it isn't even clear if she's heard of them. That said, according to Bob they're used for transportation by creatures of the forest and seem to be a go-to for Shadow Man transport or operations. Even if Antimony never encountered them in her visits to the Wood, Court!Annie has presumably been facing aggressive creatures from the wood for a few months now and the Shadow Men are probably attacking regularly now that they're able. She has had a lot of chances to observe Ys' tree-suit in operation which is different but comparable in some ways. Also I'd figure Anja should have mentioned that time she and her friends got attacked since Antimony was going to visit the woods and the Bound Dogs would be a potential hazard. Besides, it's an exciting story. So it's understandable why Forest!Annie might be boggled at the train being attacked by a Bound Dog but pointing out the fact that Shadow Men are there when they're out in the open and clearly visible remains unhelpful. I think Court!Annie should know dicing the Bound Dog was overkill (possibly unless Ys/Loup was in the immediate vicinity) and I suspect she did it because she may be out of sorts because Forest!Annie showed up and called her a fake, but I don't assign any great importance to that.

Maybe she "disabled" too many to actually care anymore and nowadays she uses them for practice/showoffs. They all seem too calm in this situation (except our Annie)
