Looking for appearances of the Crown, I realized that this is the first time Annie meets Fire: a little organic monster.

As expected, Loup has taken Annie's little flare-up in his stride, and has her measure.

"Join me, and we will rule the galaxy as father and son doggo and burn."
The art on this page is so pretty.

Reading ahead a bit from that page, I find the second-to-last panel here a bit worrisome.

Looks to me like Loup is just holding onto her fire crown and dragging her around with it. She is no match for him, just a toy.

Well, Loup does seem the type to play with fire. Of course, he also seems the type to douse someone's blaze with water, for laughs. So...

He better let go of that crown, or I'll clobber 'im..! Isn't that crown Annie's life-force??

He better let go of that crown, or I'll clobber 'im..! Isn't that crown Annie's life-force?? The Fire Elemental side does seem to be a significant part of the will-to-live of the 'Daughters of Fire' (as no one calls them). Its passing on to Annie is what led to Surma's death...

I can't help but note some hypocrisy on Loup's part here. He refers to the Court as a "cage", just after demonstrating to Annie that the inhabitants of Gillitie are subject to his whims (and currently in stasis) - making the Forest little more than a somewhat larger cage in a way...

For quite a while, I thought Loup had said "The size of you" and not "This side of you" in the last bubble. (Blame a tiny phone screen.) And for some reason I thought that was very profound.
I have so many thoughts about the whole forest/Court dynamic floating around. Probably impractical to put them all in one post at the moment. Suffice to say, I think the key is to allow Annie to spend time in both environments, because she is both, by nature. The key for her well-being, anyway.

Suffice to say, I think the key is to allow Annie to spend time in both environments, because she is both, by nature. The key for her well-being, anyway. Perceptive and astute. If it's not too presumptuous, I'd add that there may be an element of danger in how the powers-that-be on both sides of the divide interact with Annie. It's been clear for some time that there is something about Annie which spooks the Court authorities, and they've been trying to rein her in for a while as a result. The easy temptation is to perceive the Court as "bad guys" if we compare their attitude to Coyote, Ysengrin (and now Loup) encouraging her to unleash her potential power - which seems more supportive at first glance. However, as we've seen, both sides seem to have their agendas - and Annie's well-being could be put at risk in different ways by the latter...

"Does that home tolerate this side of you?" "As much as you would tolerate my human side..."

I'll admit that I've been tempted to see the Court as "bad guys" not just because of their treatment of Annie, but their other actions (what they did to Jeanne, deceiving Renard, and all those secret experiments with the ether that have an ominous tone) - but you're right that Coyote and the other forest leaders (including Loup) have behaved just as badly. I've occasionally wondered whether Annie ought to simply leave the area (even if it means saying good-bye to everyone she knows, all of her friends) and head off far away from both Court and Wood, from everyone who wants to control or manipulate her (except there are still the Guides, whom she can't outrun).

Now that I think about it, has Annie ever gone full fire elemental in the presence of other humans? Her dad, her friends, or even Jones or Eggers?

Thanks a lot for the references, specially the first one! Now I must rethink my wildspec about Annie"s anger being tapped to the Crown.
